Impaired mesial synchronization in temporal lobe epilepsy

    Get PDF
Objective: Temporal lobe epilepsy is commonly associated with synchronous, hyper-synchronous and des-synchronous activity. The aim of the present work is to explore synchronization activity in both mesial areas in temporal lobe epileptic patients during the interictal state. Methods: Using a cluster technique, we analyzed 17 temporal lobe epilepsy patients’ records of foramen ovale electrodes activity during the inter-ictal state. Results: There exists a clear tendency in the mesial area of the epileptic side to be organized as isolated clusters of electrical activity as compared with the contra-lateral side, which is organized in the form of large clusters of synchronous activity. The number of desynchronized areas is larger in the epileptic side than in the contra-lateral side in 16 out of 17 temporal lobe epileptic patients. Conclusions: The mesial area responsible for the seizures is less synchronous than the contra-lateral; the different kind of synchronous organization accounts for a lower synchronization activity at the epileptic side, suggesting that this lack of synchronous cluster organization would favour the appearance of seizures. Significance: Our results shed new light regarding synchronization issues in temporal lobe epilepsy and also it would help in reducing drastically the time of study.Fil: Ortega, Guillermo JosĂ©. Introduction : In October 2018 Telegram channel "Investiga, que algo queda" was created. This poster evaluates the use of this messaging application to disseminate research-related information. Material and Methods : An online questionnaire was conducted using Google's forms tool and subscribers were invited to complete it during the week of 4-11 January 2019. Results : From 449 channel subscribers, 78 responded to the survey and 77 questionnaires (17.14%) (associated confidence interval ±10.18 with 95% confidence level) were finally incorporated into the study. No significant differences in gender distribution were observed. Grouped by age interval 59.8% of the participants were older than 36 years (P0.05 in all cases). Conclusions : Social networks are a fundamental platform to facilitate communication, interaction and connections between professionals. In this context, the Telegram channel "Investiga, que algo queda" awakens a similar interest between health and non-healthcare professionals, with Twitter being the main way of disseminating it. We believe that nowadays social networks can act as a fundamental tool for training in research

Predictors of Threat from COVID-19: A Cross-Sectional Study in the Spanish Population

One of the first measures for fighting the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 pandemic is social isolation or quarantine. The perceived threat from COVID-19 in this situation, maintained over time, generates uncertainty and fears, etc., which could lead to mental disorders in the population. This study evaluated the perceived threat from COVID-19 in the Spanish population. The study design was cross-sectional and observational. The sample of 1014 participants recruited in Spain had a mean age of 40.87 (SD = 12.42). The gender distribution was 67.2% (n = 681) women and 32.8% (n = 333) men. Data were collected with an online survey. The instrument used was the Perception of Threat from COVID-19 Questionnaire, validated for the Spanish population. Our data showed a clear correlation between perceived threat with female gender, having children in one’s care and level of education. However, no association was observed with age or marital status. Finally, we concluded that there is a greater perception of threat from COVID-19 by women with a lower education who have children in their care, and that they are also more sensitive to minor mental disorders, such as anxiety or stress, appearing

Realfood and cancer: analysis of the reliability and quality of YouTube content

This study analyzes the quality and reliability of videos related to nutrition and cancer on YouTube. Study Design: An observational, retrospective, cross-sectional, time-limited study analyzing activity on the social network YouTube was proposed. Methods: The information from the videos was extracted through an API search tool, using the NodeXL software. The criteria to select the videos on YouTube were the keywords “real food”, “realfood”, and “cancer” and the hashtags #realfood and #cancer were present, videos in English and videos available on 1 December 2022. Results: The DISCERN value in the total number of videos viewed was 2.25 (±0.88) points, indicating low reliability. The videos uploaded by HRU represented only 20.8%. Videos suggesting that the use of foods defined as “real food” could cure cancer without the intervention of any other treatment accounted for 12.5%. Videos that provided external links to scientific/technical evidence verifying the information represented only 13.89% of the total number of videos. Of these videos, 70% corresponded to HRU. The DISCERN value for videos from HRU users was 3.05 (0.88), a value that reflects a good reliability of videos from these users. Conclusions: This study provides information on the content and quality of the videos that we can find on YouTube. We found videos of non-health users who do not base their content on any scientific evidence, with the danger that this entails for the population, but it also highlights that the videos published by HRU have greater reliability and quality, being better perceived by the population, so it is important to encourage healthcare professionals and health institutions to share verified information on YouTube. This research was funded by FundaciĂłn Banco Santander and FundaciĂłn Alfonso X el Sabio, grant number 1014011. Emotional and cognitive-behavioral factors influence people’s adaptability to change. Based on this premise, the objective of this study was to develop, evaluate and validate the Adaptation to Change Questionnaire (ADAPTA-10) for identifying those who show poor adaptability to adverse situations, such as those caused by COVID-19. This study was carried out in a sample of 1160 adults and produced a 10-item instrument with good reliability and validity indices. It is an effective tool useful in research and in clinical practice. Calculation tables are provided for the general Spanish population and by sex to evaluate adaptability to change. The two-dimensional structure proposed in the original model was confirmed. This instrument will enable the needs for adaptation to the new reality associated with COVID-19 to be detected and also other situations in which the subject becomes immersed which demand adaptation strategies in the new situation lived in.S
