Matrix Metalloproteinases as Regulators of Periodontal Inflammation

    Get PDF
Periodontitis are infectious diseases characterized by immune-mediated destruction of periodontal supporting tissues and tooth loss. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are key proteases involved in destructive periodontal diseases. The study and interest in MMP has been fuelled by emerging evidence demonstrating the broad spectrum of molecules that can be cleaved by them and the myriad of biological processes that they can potentially regulate. The huge complexity of MMP functions within the protease web' is crucial for many physiologic and pathologic processes, including immunity, inflammation, bone resorption, and wound healing. Evidence points out that MMPs assemble in activation cascades and besides their classical extracellular matrix substrates, they cleave several signalling moleculessuch as cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors, among othersregulating their biological functions and/or bioavailability during periodontal diseases. In this review, we provide an overview of emerging evidence of MMPs as regulators of periodontal inflammation.Peer reviewe

The role of positive attitudes, satisfaction and joy or living as elements of happiness

Articulo cientificoThe difficulty in defining happiness has allowed the identification and study of various elements that try to describe it; among these elements there is satisfaction with life, positive affect, personality traits, expectations, and needs. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between four of the variables that have been linked to happiness: satisfaction with life, joy of living, personal fulfillment and positive sense of life, using structural equation models (SEM). The Happiness Scale of Lima was applied to 1083 adults. The results show that only three of the proposed elements are related: positive sense of life, satisfaction with life, and joy of living, whereas personal fulfillment is part of the judgments the participants made about their own lives

From static to Vaidya solutions in scalar tensor theories

We consider some classes of Horndeski theories in four dimensions for which a certain combination of the Einstein equations within a spherical ansatz splits into two distinct branches. Recently, for these theories, some integrability and compatibility conditions have been established which have made it possible to obtain black hole solutions depending on a single integration constant identified as the mass. Here, we will show that these compatibility conditions can be generalized to accommodate a time dependence by promoting the constant mass to an arbitrary function of the retarded (advanced) time. As a direct consequence, we prove that all the static black hole solutions can be naturally promoted to non static Vaidya-like solutions. We extend this study in arbitrary higher dimensions where the pure gravity part is now described by the Lovelock theory and, where the scalar field action enjoyed the conformal invariance. For these theories, the splitting in two branches is also effective, and we show that their known static black hole solutions can as well be promoted to Vaidya-like solutions.Comment: 7 page

GIS-Based Wind and Solar Power Assessment in Central Mexico

    Get PDF
In Mexico, the economic and industrial development is in the center and north; this represents more than 50% of the country’s total consumption. Data on population and energy consumption will be obtained from the following sources: the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (INEGI), and the Energy Information System. Regarding meteorological data, two databases are used: the Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) (for solar irradiance data) and the MERRA-2 reanalysis data (for wind data). These data will be analyzed for use in a geographic information system (GIS) using kriging interpolation to create maps of solar and wind energy. The area studied includes the following states: Mexico City, Puebla, State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Morelos, Zacatecas, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes and Tlaxcala. The results showed that the areas with the highest solar potential are Hidalgo, Estado de México, Morelos, northern Puebla, southern Queretaro, northwestern Guanajuato, and northern Zacatecas, with 5.89 kWh/m2/day, and the months with the highest solar potential are March, April, May, and June. Regarding wind potential, the maximum wind power density is in Puebla, with 517 W/m2, and the windy season in central Mexico spans June, July, August, September, October, and November

Tesi

Effects of Dust Growth and Settling in T Tauri Disks

We present self-consistent disk models for T Tauri stars which include a parameterized treatment of dust settling and grain growth, building on techniques developed in a series of papers by D'Alessio etal. The models incorporate depleted distributions of dust in upper disk layers along with larger-sized particles near the disk midplane, as expected theoretically and as we suggested earlier is necessary to account for mm-wave emission, SEDs, scattered light images, and silicate emission features simultaneously. By comparing the models with recent mid- and near-IR observations, we find that the dust to gas mass ratio of small grains at the upper layers should be < 10 % of the standard value. The grains that have disappeared from the upper layers increase the dust to gas mass ratio of the disk interior; if those grains grow to maximum sizes of the order of mm during the settling process, then both the millimeter-wave fluxes and spectral slopes can be consistently explained. Depletion and growth of grains can also enhance the ionization of upper layers, enhancing the possibility of the magnetorotational instability for driving disk accretion.Comment: 53 pages, 18 figures.
