    Avalanche dynamics in fluid imbibition near the depinning transition

    We study avalanche dynamics and local activity of forced-flow imbibition fronts in disordered media. We focus on the front dynamics as the mean velocity vˉ\bar{v} of the interface is decreased and the pinning state is approached. Scaling arguments allow us to obtain the statistics of avalanche sizes and durations, which become power-law distributed due to the existence of a critical point at vˉ=0\bar{v}= 0. Results are compared with phase-field numerical simulations

    Time dependent couplings and crossover length scales in non-equilibrium surface roughening

    We show that time dependent couplings may lead to nontrivial scaling properties of the surface fluctuations of the asymptotic regime in non-equilibrium kinetic roughening models . Three typical situations are studied. In the case of a crossover between two different rough regimes, the time-dependent coupling may result in anomalous scaling for scales above the crossover length. In a different setting, for a crossover from a rough to either a flat or damping regime, the time dependent crossover length may conspire to produce a rough surface, despite the most relevant term tends to flatten the surface. In addition, our analysis sheds light into an existing debate in the problem of spontaneous imbibition, where time dependent couplings naturally arise in theoretical models and experiments.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review E (Rapid Comm.

    Deliverable DJRA1.2. Solutions and protocols proposal for the network control, management and monitoring in a virtualized network context

    This deliverable presents several research proposals for the FEDERICA network, in different subjects, such as monitoring, routing, signalling, resource discovery, and isolation. For each topic one or more possible solutions are elaborated, explaining the background, functioning and the implications of the proposed solutions.This deliverable goes further on the research aspects within FEDERICA. First of all the architecture of the control plane for the FEDERICA infrastructure will be defined. Several possibilities could be implemented, using the basic FEDERICA infrastructure as a starting point. The focus on this document is the intra-domain aspects of the control plane and their properties. Also some inter-domain aspects are addressed. The main objective of this deliverable is to lay great stress on creating and implementing the prototype/tool for the FEDERICA slice-oriented control system using the appropriate framework. This deliverable goes deeply into the definition of the containers between entities and their syntax, preparing this tool for the future implementation of any kind of algorithm related to the control plane, for both to apply UPB policies or to configure it by hand. We opt for an open solution despite the real time limitations that we could have (for instance, opening web services connexions or applying fast recovering mechanisms). The application being developed is the central element in the control plane, and additional features must be added to this application. This control plane, from the functionality point of view, is composed by several procedures that provide a reliable application and that include some mechanisms or algorithms to be able to discover and assign resources to the user. To achieve this, several topics must be researched in order to propose new protocols for the virtual infrastructure. The topics and necessary features covered in this document include resource discovery, resource allocation, signalling, routing, isolation and monitoring. All these topics must be researched in order to find a good solution for the FEDERICA network. Some of these algorithms have started to be analyzed and will be expanded in the next deliverable. Current standardization and existing solutions have been investigated in order to find a good solution for FEDERICA. Resource discovery is an important issue within the FEDERICA network, as manual resource discovery is no option, due to scalability requirement. Furthermore, no standardization exists, so knowledge must be obtained from related work. Ideally, the proposed solutions for these topics should not only be adequate specifically for this infrastructure, but could also be applied to other virtualized networks.Postprint (published version

    Intrinsic versus super-rough anomalous scaling in spontaneous imbibition

    We study spontaneous imbibition using a phase field model in a two dimensional system with a dichotomic quenched noise. By imposing a constant pressure μa<0\mu_{a}<0 at the origin, we study the case when the interface advances at low velocities, obtaining the scaling exponents z=3.0±0.1z=3.0\pm 0.1, α=1.50±0.02\alpha=1.50\pm 0.02 and αloc=0.95±0.03\alpha_{loc}= 0.95\pm 0.03 within the intrinsic anomalous scaling scenario. These results are in quite good agreement with experimental data recently published. Likewise, when we increase the interface velocity, the resulting scaling exponents are z=4.0±0.1z=4.0 \pm 0.1, α=1.25±0.02\alpha=1.25\pm 0.02 and αloc=0.95±0.03\alpha_{loc}= 0.95\pm 0.03. Moreover, we observe that the local properties of the interface change from a super-rough to an intrinsic anomalous description when the contrast between the two values of the dichotomic noise is increased. From a linearized interface equation we can compute analytically the global scaling exponents which are comparable to the numerical results, introducing some properties of the quenched noise.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Periodic forcing in viscous fingering of a nematic liquid crystal

    We study viscous fingering of an air-nematic interface in a radial Hele-Shaw cell when periodically switching on and off an electric field, which reorients the nematic and thus changes its viscosity, as well as the surface tension and its anisotropy (mainly enforced by a single groove in the cell). We observe undulations at the sides of the fingers which correlate with the switching frequency and with tip oscillations which give maximal velocity to smallest curvatures. These lateral undulations appear to be decoupled from spontaneous (noise-induced) side branching. We conclude that the lateral undulations are generated by successive relaxations between two limiting finger widths. The change between these two selected pattern scales is mainly due to the change in the anisotropy. This scenario is confirmed by numerical simulations in the channel geometry, using a phase-field model for anisotropic viscous fingering.Comment: completely rewritten version, more clear exposition of results (14 pages in Revtex + 7 eps figures

    Model for curvature-driven pearling instability in membranes

    A phase-field model for dealing with dynamic instabilities in membranes is presented. We use it to study curvature-driven pearling instability in vesicles induced by the anchorage of amphiphilic polymers on the membrane. Within this model, we obtain the morphological changes reported in recent experiments. The formation of a homogeneous pearled structure is achieved by consequent pearling of an initial cylindrical tube from the tip. For high enough concentration of anchors, we show theoretically that the homogeneous pearled shape is energetically less favorable than an inhomogeneous one, with a large sphere connected to an array of smaller spheres

    Se realizó una revisión documental para generar un análisis de los procesos de evaluación y seguimiento ambiental llevado a cabo en proyectos portuarios en Colombia, tomando de base y caso práctico la fase I del Proyecto Terminal de Contenedores de Buenaventura TC BUEN S.A . como un aporte para el mejoramiento de los procesos de las licencias ambientales. Durante el otorgamiento de la licencia ambiental de TCBUEN S.A, el proceso de la evaluación de impacto ambiental fue el principal requisito y como resultado de esta evaluación, se obliga a adelantar el seguimiento de las actividades del proyecto para prever, evitar, minimizar o compensar los efectos biofísicos, sociales u otros adversos durante su desarrollo, y para determinar si la toma de decisiones y la realización del proyecto es o no aceptable ambientalmente

    Three-dimensional aspects of fluid flows in channels. II. Effects of Meniscus and Thin Film regimes on Viscous Fingers

    We perform a three-dimensional study of steady state viscous fingers that develop in linear channels. By means of a three-dimensional Lattice-Boltzmann scheme that mimics the full macroscopic equations of motion of the fluid momentum and order parameter, we study the effect of the thickness of the channel in two cases. First, for total displacement of the fluids in the channel thickness direction, we find that the steady state finger is effectively two-dimensional and that previous two-dimensional results can be recovered by taking into account the effect of a curved meniscus across the channel thickness as a contribution to surface stresses. Secondly, when a thin film develops in the channel thickness direction, the finger narrows with increasing channel aspect ratio in agreement with experimental results. The effect of the thin film renders the problem three-dimensional and results deviate from the two-dimensional prediction.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure

    Single-phase-field model of stepped surfaces

    8 pages, 5 figures.-- PACS nrs.: 81.10.Aj, 68.35.Ct, 81.15.Hi, 81.15.Aa.We formulate a phase-field description of step dynamics on vicinal surfaces that makes use of a single dynamical field, at variance with previous analogous works in which two coupled fields are employed, namely, a phase-field proper plus the physical adatom concentration. Within an asymptotic sharp interface limit, our formulation is shown to retrieve the standard Burton-Cabrera-Frank model in the general case of asymmetric attachment coefficients (Ehrlich-Schwoebel effect). We confirm our analytical results by means of numerical simulations of our phase-field model.     Doctoral theses on foreign languages in Andalusia (2010-2021): a gender analysis

    The aim of this article is to study the production of doctoral theses on foreign languages, from our point of view as Spanish speakers, conducted in Andalusia from 2010 to 2021 in order to collect the total number of dissertations and the diachronic distribution; to describe the production per universities, authors and directors according to the gender; and to gather the descriptors most used. Results show that, during the period 2010 to 2021, Andalusian public universities recorded 266 dissertations on FL. The annual average is of 22.16 doctoral theses per year. The representation of women in the authorship of dissertations is 175 (65.78 %), as opposed to 91 men (34.22 %). The participation in the direction of such PhD theses is 51.45 % for women and 48.55 % for men. In accordance with the composition of the direction, doctoral theses were supervised in equal percentage by both only women and (41.35 %) and only men (41.35 %). Mixed direction reached 17.29 %. The amount of 117 different descriptors was gathered. The most used keyword is translation and interpreting (22.7 %). In conclusion, a decrease in the doctoral production on FL was found at Andalusian universities as of 2016. The authorship reveals that FL is a feminised field. In addition, it has been confirmed that mixed co- directions are unusual in this area
