    Vástagos cementados y no cementados en artroplastias totales de cadera por coxopatías mecánicas

    En la controversia sobre la cementación o no del componente femoral se presenta el análisis clínico, radiológico y de supervivencia de los vástagos de una serie de 121 artoplastias totales de cadera (61 cementadas y 60 sin cementar). El estudio no evidencia diferencias significativas a los 5 años de seguimiento, aunque es destacable una mayor incidencia de dolor en el muslo entre los vástagos no cementados (35%) (p < 0,1) y una tasa de reabsorción ósea proximal más elevada (70%) que en los cementados (23%). Estos fenómenos son diseño dependientes. Un mayor número de cirugías de revisión por aflojamiento aséptico entre las prótesis cementadas nos hacen preferir la fijación sin cemento del componente femoral.We discuss the cemented or non-cement fixation of the femoral components in total hip arthroplasty on a serie of 121 femoral stem (61 cemented stem and 60 non-cemented stem). Survival analysis, clinical and radiographic data showed no significant differences between the two groups at 5 years follow-up. However the incidence of pain thigh phenomenon was higher for the non-cemented stem (35%) (p < 0.1). Stress schielding was evidently higher between the non-cemented implants (70%) too, as compared with cemented stem (23%). These findings are design-dependent. The cemented arthroplasties had a higher rate of revision procedures because of aseptic loosening (13%). In this way we prefer the non-cement fixation of the femoral implant

    Flow networks: A characterization of geophysical fluid transport

    We represent transport between different regions of a fluid domain by flow networks, constructed from the discrete representation of the Perron-Frobenius or transfer operator associated to the fluid advection dynamics. The procedure is useful to analyze fluid dynamics in geophysical contexts, as illustrated by the construction of a flow network associated to the surface circulation in the Mediterranean sea. We use network-theory tools to analyze the flow network and gain insights into transport processes. In particular we quantitatively relate dispersion and mixing characteristics, classically quantified by Lyapunov exponents, to the degree of the network nodes. A family of network entropies is defined from the network adjacency matrix, and related to the statistics of stretching in the fluid, in particular to the Lyapunov exponent field. Finally we use a network community detection algorithm, Infomap, to partition the Mediterranean network into coherent regions, i.e. areas internally well mixed, but with little fluid interchange between them.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures. v2: published versio

    One-dimensional relativistic dissipative system with constant force and its quantization

    For a relativistic particle under a constant force and a linear velocity dissipation force, a constant of motion is found. Problems are shown for getting the Hamiltoninan of this system. Thus, the quantization of this system is carried out through the constant of motion and using the quantization of the velocity variable.     Large Nc scaling of meson masses and decay constants

    We perform an ab initio calculation of the Nc scaling of the low-energy couplings of the chiral Lagrangian of low-energy strong interactions, extracted from the mass dependence of meson masses and decay constants. We compute these observables on the lattice with four degenerate fermions, Nf= 4 , and varying number of colours, Nc= 3 –6, at a lattice spacing of a≃ 0.075 fm. We find good agreement with the expected Nc scaling and measure the coefficients of the leading and subleading terms in the large Nc expansion. From the subleading Nc corrections, we can also infer the Nf dependence, that we use to extract the value of the low-energy couplings for different values of Nf. We find agreement with previous determinations at Nc= 3 and Nf= 2 , 3 and also, our results support a strong paramagnetic suppression of the chiral condensate in moving from Nf= 2 to Nf=

    Durante el crecimiento y desarro- llo de las flores, la nutrición fosforada es un factor que puede influir en la vida en flore- ro. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de cinco niveles de fósforo (P): 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 y 2.0 me·L-1 de P aplicados en precosecha, mediante un sistema hidropóni- co abierto, en el comportamiento fisiológico postcosecha de tallos florales de rosa (Rosa hybrida L.) ‘Classy’ y ‘Vega’. Las variables evaluadas durante la vida de florero de los tallos florales fueron: transpiración foliar y floral, potencial de turgencia foliar y de pétalos. Además, se evaluó la concentración de antocianinas en pétalos al momento de la cosecha. Las aplicaciones de P en precose- cha tuvieron efecto significativo únicamente en la transpiración foliar; sin embargo, se demostró que la mayor vida en florero (15.8 días) de ‘Classy’ en comparación con ‘Vega’ (11.7 días) estuvo directamente asociada con mayores potenciales de turgencia foliar y de pétalos, mayor tasa transpiratoria floral y menor tasa transpiratoria foliar en ‘Classy’

    Drug resistance and treatment failure in leishmaniasis: A 21st century challenge

    Reevaluation of treatment guidelines for Old and New World leishmaniasis is urgently needed on a global basis because treatment failure is an increasing problem. Drug resistance is a fundamental determinant of treatment failure, although other factors also contribute to this phenomenon, including the global HIV/AIDS epidemic with its accompanying impact on the immune system. Pentavalent antimonials have been used successfully worldwide for the treatment of leishmaniasis since the first half of the 20th century, but the last 10 to 20 years have witnessed an increase in clinical resistance, e.g., in North Bihar in India. In this review, we discuss the meaning of “resistance” related to leishmaniasis and discuss its molecular epidemiology, particularly for Leishmania donovani that causes visceral leishmaniasis. We also discuss how resistance can affect drug combination therapies. Molecular mechanisms known to contribute to resistance to antimonials, amphotericin B, and miltefosine are also outlined

    GeV-scale neutrinos: interactions with mesons and DUNE sensitivity

    The simplest extension of the SM to account for the observed neutrino masses and mixings is the addition of at least two singlet fermions (or right-handed neutrinos). If their masses lie at or below the GeV scale, such new fermions would be produced in meson decays. Similarly, provided they are sufficiently heavy, their decay channels may involve mesons in the final state. Although the couplings between mesons and heavy neutrinos have been computed previously, significant discrepancies can be found in the literature. The aim of this paper is to clarify such discrepancies and provide consistent expressions for all relevant effective operators involving mesons with masses up to 2 GeV. Moreover, the effective Lagrangians obtained for both the Dirac and Majorana scenarios are made publicly available as FeynRules models so that fully differential event distributions can be easily simulated. As an application of our setup, we numerically compute the expected sensitivity of the DUNE near detector to these heavy neutral leptons.Comment: v4: Minor updates and text modifications.     Scaling Relations and Exponents in the Growth of Rough Interfaces Through Random Media

    The growth of a rough interface through a random media is modelled by a continuous stochastic equation with a quenched noise. By use of the Novikov theorem we can transform the dependence of the noise on the interface height into an effective temporal correlation for different regimes of the evolution of the interface. The exponents characterizing the roughness of the interface can thus be computed by simple scaling arguments showing a good agreement with recent experiments and numerical simulations.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, twocolumns, two figures (upon request).
