    When Do Composed Maps Become Entanglement Breaking?

    For many completely positive maps repeated compositions will eventually become entanglement breaking. To quantify this behaviour we develop a technique based on the Schmidt number: If a completely positive map breaks the entanglement with respect to any qubit ancilla, then applying it to part of a bipartite quantum state will result in a Schmidt number bounded away from the maximum possible value. Iterating this result puts a successively decreasing upper bound on the Schmidt number arising in this way from compositions of such a map. By applying this technique to completely positive maps in dimension three that are also completely copositive we prove the so called PPT squared conjecture in this dimension. We then give more examples of completely positive maps where our technique can be applied, e.g.~maps close to the completely depolarizing map, and maps of low rank. Finally, we study the PPT squared conjecture in more detail, establishing equivalent conjectures related to other parts of quantum information theory, and we prove the conjecture for Gaussian quantum channels.Comment: 24 pages, no picture

    Thermocapillary convection within a cylindrical cavity under the evaporation effect

Governing equations formulated in dimensionless variables have been solved by finite difference method. Effects of key parameters on fluid flow and heat transfer patterns have been analyzed. It has been found that an increase in Marangoni number leads to a decrease in the circulation intensity within the cavity and heat transfer reduction along the free boundary

    Implications of dealing with airborne substances and reactive oxygen species: what mammalian lungs, animals, and plants have to say?

    A gas-exchange structure interacts with the environment and is constantly challenged by contaminants that may elicit defense responses, thus compromising its primary function. It is also exposed to high concentrations of O2 that can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Revisiting the lung of mammals, an integrative picture emerges, indicating that this bronchi-alveolar structure deals with inflammation in a special way, which minimizes compromising the gas-exchange role. Depending on the challenge, pro-inflammatory or antiinflammatory responses are elicited by conserved molecules, such as surfactant proteins A and D. An even broader picture points to the participation of airway sensors, responsive to inflammatory mediators, in a loop linking the immunological and nervous systems and expanding the role played by respiratory organs in functions other than gas-exchange. A byproduct of exposure to high concentration of O2 is the formation of superoxide (), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl radical (HO•), and other ROS, which are known to be toxic to different types of cells, including the lung epithelium. A balance between antioxidants and oxidants exists; in pulmonary epithelial cells high intracellular and extracellular levels of antioxidants are found. Antioxidant adaptations related to plant and animal life-styles involve a broad range of overlapping strategies based on well-conserved molecules. Glutathione (GSH) is an abundant and ubiquitous thiol-tripeptide antioxidant, also present in lungs, whose role in providing information on the intracellular redox state of animals and plants is well established. In these organisms, GSH influences gene expression associated with stress, maximizing defense responses. Several enzymatic antioxidants, such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase, and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase participate in the redox system; in animals that are stress-tolerant GPx is a key element against oxidative assaults. Most importantly, alternative roles of ROS as signaling molecules have been found in all plants and animals. For example, alveolar macrophages produce that act as second messengers, in addition to having a bactericidal role. The nonradical ROS H2O2 signals inflammation in mammalian lungs, apoptosis in different animal tissues, and is also involved in stomatal closure, root development, gene expression, and defense responses of plants. Antioxidant adaptations in some water-breathing animals involve the excretion of H2O2 by diffusion through gas-exchange structures. The fine balance among a multitude of factors and cells makes the difference between damage and protection in animals and plants.     Pilotstudie Forschungsrating Soziologie: Vorbereitung, Durchführung, Ergebnisse der Erhebung soziologischer Publikationen

    Das GESIS-IZ Sozialwissenschaften hat im Auftrag des Wissenschaftsrates von August 2006 bis April 2007 den publikationsbezogenen Bereich des Forschungsratings Soziologie durchgeführt. Dieses Forschungsrating dient als Pilotprojekt für die Leistungsbewertung der universitären und außeruniversitären Wissenschaft in der Bundesrepublik. Bei der Darlegung der konzeptionellen und technischen Umsetzung der Pilotstudie stehen drei Schritte im Fokus: die Bestimmung der Datengrundlage, die Verfahren der Publikationsrecherche und -validierung zur Erzeugung der Vorlagemenge durch GESIS-IZ, die Bearbeitung der neugemeldeten Publikationen und die Zusammenführung und Auswertung der Daten nach Maßgabe des Wissenschaftsrats. Die von GESIS-IZ entwickelte und implementierte Technologie des Online-Erfassungssystems wird in ihren Elementen und ihrer Funktion vorgestellt. Es werden die Anfragen und Anregungen ausgewertet, die während der 'Selbstmelde-Phase' über die E-Mail-Hotline eingingen. Hieran schließt sich eine detaillierte Betrachtung der 'Nichtmelder' an - derjenigen Personen, die sich nicht im Online-System angemeldet, ihre persönliche Seite weder angesehen, korrigiert noch ergänzt haben. Diese Gruppe ist auf Grundlage der vom Wissenschaftsrat gemeldeten Daten und weiterer Recherchen nach folgenden Kriterien genauer betrachtet worden: Verteilung nach akademischem Abschluss und Statusgruppe, nach Disziplinen und nach Alterskohorten. Fragen nach den Gründen für die Teilnahme oder Nichtteilnahme an der Pilotstudie können auf dieses Material zurückgreifen. In einer ergänzenden Stichprobenanalyse wird die SOLIS/CSA-Vorlage gegen elf weitere Datenbanken (u.a. Social SciSearch) und Kataloge (u.a. Dreiländerkatalog des HBZ) geprüft. Die differenzierte Betrachtung der nachgemeldeten Publikationen - aufgeschlüsselt nach Erscheinungsort und Dokumenttypen und mit Perspektive auf die Diversifizierung sozialwissenschaftlicher Publikationen - erlaubt Hinweise darauf, wie der Deckungsgrad des Nachweises sozialwissenschaftlicher Publikationen effizient optimiert werden kann. Ein abschließendes Kapitel fasst die Ergebnisse zusammen und systematisiert die Schlussfolgerungen mit Blick auf den Ausbau der GESIS-IZ-Informationsdienste. (ICF2

    Role of thioredoxin reductase 1 and thioredoxin interacting protein in prognosis of breast cancer

    Introduction: The purpose of this work was to study the prognostic influence in breast cancer of thioredoxin reductase 1 (TXNRD1) and thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP), key players in oxidative stress control that are currently evaluated as possible therapeutic targets. Methods: Analysis of the association of TXNRD1 and TXNIP RNA expression with the metastasis-free interval (MFI) was performed in 788 patients with node-negative breast cancer, consisting of three individual cohorts (Mainz, Rotterdam and Transbig). Correlation with metagenes and conventional clinical parameters (age, pT stage, grading, hormone and ERBB2 status) was explored. MCF-7 cells with a doxycycline-inducible expression of an oncogenic ERBB2 were used to investigate the influence of ERBB2 on TXNRD1 and TXNIP transcription. Results: TXNRD1 was associated with worse MFI in the combined cohort (hazard ratio = 1.955; P < 0.001) as well as in all three individual cohorts. In contrast, TXNIP was associated with better prognosis (hazard ratio = 0.642; P < 0.001) and similar results were obtained in all three subcohorts. Interestingly, patients with ERBB2-status-positive tumors expressed higher levels of TXNRD1. Induction of ERBB2 in MCF-7 cells caused not only an immediate increase in TXNRD1 but also a strong decrease in TXNIP. A subsequent upregulation of TXNIP as cells undergo senescence was accompanied by a strong increase in levels of reactive oxygen species. Conclusions: TXNRD1 and TXNIP are associated with prognosis in breast cancer, and ERBB2 seems to be one of the factors shifting balances of both factors of the redox control system in a prognostic unfavorable manner

    Insights into internal effects of common-envelope evolution using the extended Kepler mission

    We present an analysis of the binary and physical parameters of a unique pulsating white dwarf with a main-sequence companion, SDSS J1136+0409, observed for more than 77 d during the first pointing of the extended Kepler mission: K2 Campaign 1. Using new groundbased spectroscopy, we show that this post-common-envelope binary has an orbital period of 6.89760103(60) h, which is also seen in the photometry as a result of Doppler beaming and ellipsoidal variations of the secondary. We spectroscopically refine the temperature of the white dwarf to 12 330 ± 260 K and its mass to 0.601 ± 0.036 M. We detect seven independent pulsation modes in the K2 light curve. A preliminary asteroseismic solution is in reasonable agreement with the spectroscopic atmospheric parameters. Three of the pulsation modes are clearly rotationally split multiplets, which we use to demonstrate that the white dwarf is not synchronously rotating with the orbital period but has a rotation period of 2.49 ± 0.53 h. This is faster than any known isolated white dwarf, but slower than almost all white dwarfs measured in non-magnetic cataclysmic variables, the likely future state of this binary

Наведено площі порушень земель при розробці основних видів корисних копалин. Проаналізовано ризики, що виникають із несвоєчасною рекультивацією земель гірничого відводу, а також від покинутих гірничих виробок старих кар'єрів. Паралельно розглянуті обсяги відходів гірничого виробництва та їх повторне використання в якості заповнювача для залишкових вироблених просторів кар'єрів.The article is devoted to the research of land violation indicators at the extraction of minerals by surface mining method. Data gives about the land violations area at the mining key minerals. Ana-lyzed the risks from the not-on-time reclamation of the mining clam and abandoned excavations of the old quarries. In parallel considered the volumes of mining wastes and their reuse as aggregate for filling residual spaces of surface mines.Статья посвящена исследованиям площадей нарушения земель, связанных с добычей полезных ископаемых открытым способом.     Urban air pollution and emergency room admissions for respiratory symptoms: a case-crossover study in Palermo, Italy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Air pollution from vehicular traffic has been associated with respiratory diseases. In Palermo, the largest metropolitan area in Sicily, urban air pollution is mainly addressed to traffic-related pollution because of lack of industrial settlements, and the presence of a temperate climate that contribute to the limited use of domestic heating plants. This study aimed to investigate the association between traffic-related air pollution and emergency room admissions for acute respiratory symptoms.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From January 2004 through December 2007, air pollutant concentrations and emergency room visits were collected for a case-crossover study conducted in Palermo, Sicily. Risk estimates of short-term exposures to particulate matter and gaseous ambient pollutants including carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide were calculated by using a conditional logistic regression analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Emergency departments provided data on 48,519 visits for respiratory symptoms. Adjusted case-crossover analyses revealed stronger effects in the warm season for the most part of the pollutants considered, with a positive association for PM<sub>10 </sub>(odds ratio = 1.039, 95% confidence interval: 1.020 - 1.059), SO<sub>2 </sub>(OR = 1.068, 95% CI: 1.014 - 1.126), nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>: OR = 1.043, 95% CI: 1.021 - 1.065), and CO (OR = 1.128, 95% CI: 1.074 - 1.184), especially among females (according to an increase of 10 μg/m<sup>3 </sup>in PM<sub>10</sub>, NO<sub>2</sub>, SO<sub>2</sub>, and 1 mg/m<sup>3 </sup>in CO exposure). A positive association was observed either in warm or in cold season only for PM<sub>10</sub>.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our findings suggest that, in our setting, exposure to ambient levels of air pollution is an important determinant of emergency room (ER) visits for acute respiratory symptoms, particularly during the warm season. ER admittance may be considered a good proxy to evaluate the adverse effects of air pollution on respiratory health.</p
