    Mechanical properties and thermomechanical behaviour of poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) based shape memory polymer composites

    Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are an emerging class of intelligent material that can program in to a temporary shape and recover to its original by exposing to a particular external stimulus. Poly (ethyleneco-vinyl acetate) (EVA) is one of the commercial polymers, which has been used to produce SMPs activated by heat. However, its low mechanical properties, low recovery stress and flexible behaviour restrict the potential applications under robust conditions. Herein, we developed a series of EVA based shape memory polymer composites (SMPCs) with glass fibre, carbon fibre and multi-walled carbon nanotube reinforcements. The effects of different reinforcements on tensile strength have been investigated. Moreover, the dynamic mechanical analysis has been carried out to characterize the glass transition temperature. The shape memory performance of the neat SMP and SMPCs were examined by measuring the angle recovery of 90° bended strips. Subsequently, the shape fixity and recovery ratios of the samples were calculated. This paper presents the manufacturing methods and performance of the fibre and particle reinforced EVA based SMPCs. The inclusion of reinforcements have enhanced the applicability of EVA based SMPCs in wider range of engineering application. In this paper the applicability of such SMPCs for machine elements are deliberated. Accordingly, a conceptual design of a SMPC made mechanical coupler is presented

    High spectral resolution ground-based observations of Venus in the 450-1250 cm sup-1 region

    The thermal emission of Venus was recorded during the winter of 1970-1971, and in 1973 using the 2.7m telescope at McDonald Observatory. The double beam Michelson interferometer installed at the Coude focus was used. The spectrum was recorded between 400/cm and 1,400/cm. For the 1970 observations, the spectral resolution was 0.25/cm and the linear spatial resolution was 3/4 of the disk of Venus. In 1973 the spectral resolution was 0.20/cm with a spatial resolution 1/3 of the planetary disk. In addition to Venus, the moon, the sky adjacent to each object, and the zenith sky were recorded to help eliminate the absorption and emission effects of the earth's atmosphere

    Simultaneous localisation and mapping: A stereo vision based approach

    With limited dynamic range and poor noise performance, cameras still pose considerable challenges in the application of range sensors in the context of robotic navigation, especially in the implementation of Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) with sparse features. This paper presents a combination of methods in solving the SLAM problem in a constricted indoor environment using small baseline stereo vision. Main contributions include a feature selection and tracking algorithm, a stereo noise filter, a robust feature validation algorithm and a multiple hypotheses adaptive window positioning method in 'closing the loop'. These methods take a novel approach in that information from the image processing and robotic navigation domains are used in tandem to augment each other. Experimental results including a real-time implementation in an office-like environment are also presented. © 2006 IEEE

    New framework for simultaneous localization and mapping: Multi map SLAM

    The main contribution of this paper arises from the development of a new framework, which has its inspiration in the mechanics of human navigation, for solving the problem of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). The proposed framework has specific relevance to vision based SLAM, in particular, small baseline stereo vision based SLAM and addresses several key issues relevant to the particular sensor domain. Firstly, as observed in the authors' earlier work, the particular sensing device has a highly nonlinear observation model resulting in inconsistent state estimations when standard recursive estimators such as the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) or the Unscented variants are used. Secondly, vision based approaches tend to have issues related to large feature density, narrow field of view and the potential requirement of maintaining large databases for vision based data association techniques. The proposed Multi Map SLAM solution addresses the filter inconsistency issue by formulating the SLAM problem as a nonlinear batch optimization. Feature management is addressed through a two tier map representation. The two maps have unique attributes assigned to them. The Global Map (GM) is a compact global representation of the robots environment and the Local Map (LM) is exclusively used for low-level navigation between local points in the robot's navigation horizon. ©2008 IEEE

    Nephrotoxic Contaminants in Drinking Water and Urine, and Chronic Kidney Disease in Rural Sri Lanka

    Chronic kidney disease of unknown (“u”) cause (CKDu) is a growing public health concern in Sri Lanka. Prior research has hypothesized a link with drinking water quality, but rigorous studies are lacking. This study assesses the relationship between nephrotoxic elements (namely arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and uranium (U)) in drinking water, and urine samples collected from individuals with and/or without CKDu in endemic areas, and from individuals without CKDu in nonendemic areas. All water samples—from a variety of source types (i.e., shallow and deep wells, springs, piped, and surface water)—contained extremely low concentrations of nephrotoxic elements, and all were well below drinking water guideline values. Concentrations in individual urine samples were higher than, and uncorrelated with, those measured in drinking water, suggesting potential exposure from other sources. Mean urinary concentrations of these elements for individuals with clinically diagnosed CKDu were consistently lower than individuals without CKDu both in endemic and nonendemic areas. This likely stems from the inability of the kidney to excrete these toxic elements via urine in CKDu patients. Urinary concentrations of individuals were also found to be within the range of reference values measured in urine of healthy unexposed individuals from international biomonitoring studies, though these reference levels may not be safe for the Sri Lankan population. The results suggest that CKDu cannot be clearly linked with the presence of these contaminants in drinking water. There remains a need to investigate potential interactions of low doses of these elements (particularly Cd and As) with other risk factors that appear linked to CKDu prior to developing public health strategies to address this illness
