Boxborough Economic Development Study: Phase 2, Technical Memo
The Town of Boxboroughâs Economic Development Committee (EDC) contracted with the Center for Economic Development at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to produce an economic development study. Phase II began in January of 2020 and provides a deeper evaluation of the development scenarios proposed at the completion of Phase I, involving four key components: 1. Summarize the results from a survey of citizen preferences on the Phase I scenarios. 2. Produce a series of vignettes to explain the key elements of the different scenarios to the public. 3. Assess the potential market demand for specific office, retail, and other commercial activities discussed in the Phase I scenarios. 4. Convene two âvirtualâ community discussion sessions to identify town-wide development priorities and possible short-term actions
Integration of environmental data in BIM tool & linked building data
Environmental assessment is a critical need to ensure building sustainability. In order to enhance the sustainability of building, involved actors should be able to access and share not only information about the building but also data about products and especially their environmental assessment. Among several approaches that have been proposed to achieve that, semantic web technologies stand out from the crowd by their capabilities to share data and enhance interoperability in between the most heterogeneous systems. This paper presents the implementation of a method in which semantic web technologies and particularly Linked Data have been combined with Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools to foster building sustainability by introducing products with their environmental assessment in building data during the modelling phase. Based on Linked Building Data (LBD) vocabularies and environmental data, several ontologies have been generated in order to make both of them available as Resource Description Framework (RDF) graphs. A database access plugin has been developed and installed in a BIM tool. In that way, the LBD generated from the BIM tool contains, for each product a reference to its environmental assessment which is contained in a triplestore
Class Exploration to a Campus Library Curriculum Center to Develop Book-Building Capacity for Teacher Candidates
The purpose of this pilot was to examine the effectiveness of the practice of providing opportunities for undergraduate elementary education teacher candidates to explore the campus library curriculum center as a group regularly during class time. During their visits, teacher candidates were guided in selecting and analyzing childrenâs literature for their future teaching. The research was focused on how these visits impacted teacher candidatesâ understanding of childrenâs literature and literacy development. Data were collected through a survey administered at the conclusion of the course and responses were probed further during one-on-one interviews. Candidates described these visits as beneficial in exploring literature collaboratively and deepening their knowledge about curricular materials available to support and enhance their teaching. Teacher candidates were able to develop skills in choosing appropriate texts embodying targeted characteristics. They benefitted from the shared sociolinguistic experiences selecting and examining texts in the curriculum center with teacher and peer support. The results of this investigation suggest that these exploratory curriculum center visits may be a promising practice for teacher educators to include in childrenâs literature courses

Effect Of Coronary Bypass And Valve Structure On Outcome In Isolated Valve Replacement For Aortic Stenosis
Reports differ regarding the effect of concomitant coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in patients who undergo aortic valve replacement (AVR) for aortic stenosis (AS), and no reports have described the effect of aortic valve structure in patients who undergo AVR for AS. A total of 871 patients aged 24 to 94 years (mean 70) whose AVR for AS was their first cardiac operation, with or without first concomitant CABG, were included. Patients who underwent mitral valve procedures were excluded. In comparison with the 443 patients (51%) who did not undergo CABG, the 428 (49%) who underwent concomitant CABG were significantly older, were more often male, had lower transvalvular peak systolic pressure gradients and larger valve areas, had lower frequencies of congenitally malformed aortic valves, had lighter valves by weight, had higher frequencies of systemic hypertension, and had longer stays in the hospital after AVR. Early and late (to 10 years) mortality were similar by propensity-adjusted analysis in patients who did and did not undergo concomitant CABG. Congenitally unicuspid or bicuspid valves occurred in approximately 90% of those aged 21 to 50, in nearly 70% in those aged 51 to 70 years, and in just over 30% in those aged 71 to 95 years. Unadjusted and adjusted survival was significantly higher in patients with unicuspid or bicuspid valves compared to those with tricuspid valves. In conclusion, although concomitant CABG had no effect on the adjusted probability of survival, the type of aortic valve (unicuspid or bicuspid vs tricuspid) significantly affected the unadjusted and adjusted probability of survival. BioModels Database: An enhanced, curated and annotated resource for published quantitative kinetic models
Background: Quantitative models of biochemical and cellular systems are used to answer a variety of questions in the
biological sciences. The number of published quantitative models is growing steadily thanks to increasing interest in
the use of models as well as the development of improved software systems and the availability of better, cheaper
computer hardware. To maximise the benefits of this growing body of models, the field needs centralised model
repositories that will encourage, facilitate and promote model dissemination and reuse. Ideally, the models stored in
these repositories should be extensively tested and encoded in community-supported and standardised formats. In
addition, the models and their components should be cross-referenced with other resources in order to allow their
unambiguous identification.
Description: BioModels Database http://www.ebi.ac.uk/biomodels/ is aimed at addressing exactly these needs. It is a
freely-accessible online resource for storing, viewing, retrieving, and analysing published, peer-reviewed quantitative
models of biochemical and cellular systems. The structure and behaviour of each simulation model distributed by
BioModels Database are thoroughly checked; in addition, model elements are annotated with terms from controlled
vocabularies as well as linked to relevant data resources. Models can be examined online or downloaded in various
formats. Reaction network diagrams generated from the models are also available in several formats. BioModels
Database also provides features such as online simulation and the extraction of components from large scale models
into smaller submodels. Finally, the system provides a range of web services that external software systems can use to
access up-to-date data from the database.
Conclusions: BioModels Database has become a recognised reference resource for systems biology. It is being used by
the community in a variety of ways; for example, it is used to benchmark different simulation systems, and to study the
clustering of models based upon their annotations. Model deposition to the database today is advised by several
publishers of scientific journals. The models in BioModels Database are freely distributed and reusable; the underlying
software infrastructure is also available from SourceForge https://sourceforge.net/projects/biomodels/ under the GNU

Rapid response of the Norwegian Atlantic Slope Current to wind forcing
Under embargo until: 2023-07-11We explore drivers of variability in the Norwegian Atlantic Slope Current, which carries relatively warm Atlantic Water toward the Barents Sea and Arctic Ocean, using Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) satellite altimetry data and TOPAZ4 ocean reanalysis data. Previous studies have pointed to a variety of causes, on a variety of time scales. We use data with daily resolution to investigate day-to-day changes in ocean transport across three sections crossing the shelf-slope of Norway (Svinøy, Gimsøy, and the Barents Sea Opening). The highest (lowest) extremes in transport at all sections develop over two days as a cyclonic (anticyclonic) atmospheric pressure system approaches from the southwest, piling up (extracting) water at the coast of Norway. The actual peak is reached when the pressure system passes the site of measurement, and the transport then relaxes for the next two days as the system continues northward along the coast. Other sources of short-term variability, such as propagating continental shelf waves and baroclinic instability, are unlikely to yield covariability over large separations. Monthly variability in the current can also be explained by passing weather systems since their numbers and intensity vary greatly from month to month. Many studies of longer-term variability, especially in the Barents Sea Opening, have pointed to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) as the main cause of variability. Redox controls reca protein activity via reversible oxidation of its methionine residues
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause damage to DNA and proteins. Here we report that the RecA recombinase is itself oxidized by ROS. Genetic and biochemical analyses revealed that oxidation of RecA altered its DNA repair and DNA recombination activities. Mass spectrometry analysis showed that exposure to ROS converted 4 out of 9 Met residues of RecA to methionine sulfoxide. Mimicking oxidation of Met35 by changing it for Gln caused complete loss of function whereas mimicking oxidation of Met164 resulted in constitutive SOS activation and loss of recombination activity. Yet, all ROS-induced alterations of RecA activity were suppressed by methionine sulfoxide reductases MsrA and MsrB. These findings indicate that under oxidative stress, MsrA/B is needed for RecA homeostasis control.
