---------- Abstract: In this work it is pointed out the recession of the administration of soil resources in Portugal in the last 40 years, as opposed to the recent development actions at European level (Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection) and at global level (Global Soil Partnership, World Soil Day and International Year of Soils 2015, IYS-2015). Taking advantage of the international momentum in this field it is presented the Portuguese Soil Partnership (PtSP) as an initiative that aims to reverse the process of regression and the dispersion of efforts in the national administration of the soils. Accordingly with the PtSP's strategic objectives, also presented, two short-term actions are proposed: the harmonization of the country's soil maps at 1: 250,000 or 1: 500,000 scale, and the establishment of a National Soil Information System (NSIS). The World Soil Charter, revised in 2015, strongly recommends that national governments develop a national land policy, a national land information system and an institutional framework to monitor soil resources. The IYS-2015 would be an exceptional opportunity to trigger the implementation of an (integrated) soil policy in Portugal and a NSIS as a pivot tool for this policy

Cellular interactions in the tumor microenvironment: the role of secretome

    Get PDF
Over the past years, it has become evident that cancer initiation and progression depends on several components of the tumor microenvironment, including inflammatory and immune cells, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, adipocytes, and extracellular matrix. These components of the tumor microenvironment and the neoplastic cells interact with each other providing pro and antitumor signals. The tumor-stroma communication occurs directly between cells or via a variety of molecules secreted, such as growth factors, cytokines, chemokines and microRNAs. This secretome, which derives not only from tumor cells but also from cancer-associated stromal cells, is an important source of key regulators of the tumorigenic process. Their screening and characterization could provide useful biomarkers to improve cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of treatment responses.Agência financiadora Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP) FAPESP 10/51168-0 12/06048-2 13/03839-1 National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) CNPq 306216/2010-8 Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia (FCT) UID/BIM/04773/2013 CBMR 1334info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Direct Application of the Phase Estimation Algorithm to Find the Eigenvalues of the Hamiltonians

The eigenvalue of a Hamiltonian, H\mathcal{H}, can be estimated through the phase estimation algorithm given the matrix exponential of the Hamiltonian, exp(iH)exp(-i\mathcal{H}). The difficulty of this exponentiation impedes the applications of the phase estimation algorithm particularly when H\mathcal{H} is composed of non-commuting terms. In this paper, we present a method to use the Hamiltonian matrix directly in the phase estimation algorithm by using an ancilla based framework: In this framework, we also show how to find the power of the Hamiltonian matrix-which is necessary in the phase estimation algorithm-through the successive applications. This may eliminate the necessity of matrix exponential for the phase estimation algorithm and therefore provide an efficient way to estimate the eigenvalues of particular Hamiltonians. The classical and quantum algorithmic complexities of the framework are analyzed for the Hamiltonians which can be written as a sum of simple unitary matrices and shown that a Hamiltonian of order 2n2^n written as a sum of LL number of simple terms can be used in the phase estimation algorithm with (n+1+logL)(n+1+logL) number of qubits and O(2anL)O(2^anL) number of quantum operations, where aa is the number of iterations in the phase estimation. In addition, we use the Hamiltonian of the hydrogen molecule as an example system and present the simulation results for finding its ground state energy.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

The purpose of this study was to describe the distribution of different swimsuits models used by male swimmers during all the finals at the 13th FINA World Championships, being held at Rome in 2009. Simultaneously, it was intended to verify the distribution of the different swimsuits used along the distances of the freestyle finals, and thus to understand the preferences of the top-level swimmers. It were used the results databases from the 13th FINA World Championships, in Rome 2009. Only the male swimmers participating at the finals were analyzed, for a total number of 17 individual swimming events. The wear swimsuit by each swimmer in a given event was observed from video recorded of the television broadcast. Male swimmers participating in the finals limited their choice to seven types of commercial swimsuits, of four different sports brands. Jaked01 Full® was the most used (47.07%), followed by the Powerskin X-Glide Full® (34.56%), the Powerskin X-Glide Pants® (7.35%) and the LZR Racer Full® (5.15%). In freestyle swimming events most of the male swimmers choose to wear full body swimsuits. Jaked01 Full® was predominant in the 50 m event, with 62.50% of swimmers choices. This value decreases to 25.00% when analyzing 100 m event, and remained similar over the longer distances swum. The Powerskin X-Glide Full® was used for 37.50% of the swimmers in 50 m swimming event, and it increases to 62.50% for the 100 m freestyle. These results seem to demonstrate that swimmers have preferences for full swimsuits, and for these two swimsuits, the Powerskin X-Glide Full® and the Jaked01 Full®

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of culture time and sex of nuclei donor cells on embryo and fetal development after nuclear transfer. Thus, bovine oocytes were matured, enucleated and reconstructed with somatic cells from an adult animal. After fusion and chemical activation, the reconstituted zygotes were cultured in Charles Rosenkranz 2 (CR2) on a granular monolayer cell at 38.8ºC in a humidified atmosphere 5% CO2 in air for seven days, and transferred to synchronized receptors. Cleavage rates and development to blastocyst of embryo reconstructed with cells cultured for a longer time were lower than rates obtained with other culture times. Moreover, these produced blastocysts did not result in the development of full term pregnancy. Although cleavage rates were higher in female embryos, the number of embryos that reached blastocyst stage was higher in male embryos. During gestation period, females showed higher abortion rates from 90 to 120 days of gestation. These results indicate that cells donnors of nuclei cultured for long periods make the production of blastocysts difficult and increase the chances of losses during pregnancy. Cloned male embryos are more succesful in becoming blastocysts and result in lower gestational loss rate.À Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP
