Speedy Trial - No Mere Ceremonial
In recent years, there has been a progressive refinement of individual rights, to the extent that due process must be accorded to the participant in not only judicial proceedings, but administrative actions as well. Yet, in the face of this, the anomaly exists that one highly important individual right, clearly defined by the Speedy-Trial Clause of the Sixth Amendment, is persistently abused by courts who adhere to overly strict, and demonstrably improper, interpretations of its requirements, and by prosecutors who seem to feel that a prompt determination of the innocence or guilt of the accused is a matter of grace, not of right

Anomalous dimensions of leading twist conformal operators
We extend and develop a method for perturbative calculations of anomalous
dimensions and mixing matrices of leading twist conformal primary operators in
conformal field theories. Such operators lie on the unitarity bound and hence
are conserved (irreducible) in the free theory. The technique relies on the
known pattern of breaking of the irreducibility conditions in the interacting
theory. We relate the divergence of the conformal operators via the field
equations to their descendants involving an extra field and accompanied by an
extra power of the coupling constant. The ratio of the two-point functions of
descendants and of their primaries determines the anomalous dimension, allowing
us to gain an order of perturbation theory. We demonstrate the efficiency of
the formalism on the lowest-order analysis of anomalous dimensions and mixing
matrices which is required for two-loop calculations of the former. We compare
these results to another method based on anomalous conformal Ward identities
and constraints from the conformal algebra. It also permits to gain a
perturbative order in computations of mixing matrices. We show the complete
equivalence of both approaches.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures; references adde
Bartonella rochalimae in Raccoons, Coyotes, and Red Foxes
To determine additional reservoirs for Bartonella rochalimae, we examined samples from several wildlife species. We isolated B. rochalimae from 1 red fox near Paris, France, and from 11 raccoons and 2 coyotes from California, USA. Co-infection with B. vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii was documented in 1 of the coyotes
High rate of extrapair paternity in a human population demonstrates diversity in human reproductive strategies
Among nonhuman species, social monogamy is rarely accompanied by complete fidelity. Evolutionary theory predicts that the rate of extrapair paternity (EPP) should vary according to socioecological conditions. In humans, however, geneticists contend that EPP is negligible and relatively invariable. This conclusion is based on a limited set of studies, almost all of which describe European-descent groups. Using a novel, double-blind method designed in collaboration with a community of Himba pastoralists, we find that the rate of EPP in this population is 48%, with 70% of couples having at least one EPP child. Both men and women were very accurate at detecting cases of EPP. These data suggest that the range of variation in EPP across human populations is substantially greater than previously thought. We further show that a high rate of EPP can be accompanied by high paternity confidence, which highlights the importance of disaggregating EPP from the notion of âcuckoldry.

The cusp anomalous dimension at three loops and beyond
We derive an analytic formula at three loops for the cusp anomalous dimension
Gamma_cusp(phi) in N=4 super Yang-Mills. This is done by exploiting the
relation of the latter to the Regge limit of massive amplitudes. We comment on
the corresponding three loops quark anti-quark potential. Our result also
determines a considerable part of the three-loop cusp anomalous dimension in
QCD. Finally, we consider a limit in which only ladder diagrams contribute to
physical observables. In that limit, a precise agreement with strong coupling
is observed.Comment: 34 pages, 6 figures. v2: references added, typos correcte
