    Addressing European ocean energy challenge:The dtoceanplus structured innovation tool for concept creation and selection

    The whole energy system requires renewables that scale and produce reliable, valuable energy at an acceptable cost. The key to increasing the deployment of ocean energy is bringing down development and operating costs. This paper proposes a structured approach to innovation in ocean energy systems that would spur innovation and expand the market for ocean energy. This approach can be used by a wide range of stakeholders—including technology and project developers and investors—when considering creating or improving designs. The Structured Innovation design tool within the DTOceanPlus suite is one of a kind beyond the current state-of-the-art. It enables the adaptation and integration of systematic problem-solving tools based on quality function deployment (QFD), the theory of inventive thinking (TRIZ), and the failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) methodologies for the ocean energy sector. In obtaining and assessing innovative concepts, the integration of TRIZ into QFD enables the designers to define the innovation problem, identifies trade-offs in the system, and, with TRIZ as a systematic inventive problem-solving methodology, generates potential design concepts for the contradicting requirements. Additionally, the FMEA is used to assess the technical risks associated with the proposed design concepts. The methodology is demonstrated using high-level functional requirements for a small array of ten tidal turbines to improve the devices layout and power cabling architecture. The Structured Innovation design tool output comprises critical functional requirements with the highest overall impact and the least organisational effort to implement, along with appropriate alternative solutions to conflicting requirements

    Prevalence of physical conditions and multimorbidity in a cohort of adults with intellectual disabilities with and without Down syndrome: cross-sectional study

    Abstract: Objectives To investigate the prevalence of multimorbidity in adults with intellectual disabilities with and without Down syndrome. Design: Large, population-based cross-sectional study. Setting: The geographical area of one Health Board, Scotland. Participants: All adults (aged 16+ years) known to general practitioners to have intellectual disabilities and adults receiving services provided or paid by intellectual disabilities health or social work services. 1023/1562 potential participants took part (65.5%); 562 (54.9%) men and 461 (45.1%) women, aged 43.9 years (16–83 years). 186 had Down syndrome and 837 did not. Main outcome measures: The prevalence of International Statistical Classification of Diseases, 10th revision, physical health conditions and multimorbidity detected at a comprehensive health assessment. Results: The mean number of physical health conditions/participant was 11.04, and 98.7% had multimorbidity. The most prevalent conditions are painful and/or disabling and, in some cases, life threatening. The five most prevalent were visual impairment, obesity, epilepsy, constipation and ataxic/gait disorders. The pattern of multimorbidity differs from that seen in the general population and is spread across the entire adult life course. The extent of multimorbidity in the adults with Down syndrome was similar to that of the adults without Down syndrome, while the prevalence of individual conditions differed. Conclusions: This robustly designed study with a large population found an extremely high prevalence of multimorbidity in adults with intellectual disabilities across the entire adult life course. This increases complexity of medical management that secondary healthcare services and medical education are not yet geared towards, as these tend to focus on single conditions. This is in addition to complexity due to limitations in communication and understanding. As the physical conditions within their multimorbidity also differ from that seen in the older general population, urgent attention is needed to develop the care pathways and guidelines that are required to inform and so improve their healthcare

    Gender and Patient Satisfaction with Primary Care: Tuning in to Women in Quality Measurement

    This study analyzes the relationship between patient gender and satisfaction with primary care visits, using 1999 survey data on 1691 women and 760 men making primary care visits at multiple sites affiliated with a large academic health system designated as a National Center of Excellence in Women's Health (COE). The main findings are that in multivariate analyses controlling for patient and visit characteristics, different aspects of the content of primary care visits are important to women and men. Women's overall satisfaction with visits is more dependent than men's on informational content, continuity of care, and multidisciplinarity. Men's overall satisfaction is more dependent on the personal interest shown in them by providers. No differences in satisfaction are found between those seen in sites affiliated with the COE and other primary care sites within the health system that are not core sites of the COE. We conclude that quality improvement and research in women's primary care could benefit from gender analysis of patient satisfaction data and from more gender-sensitive patient satisfaction measures.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/63266/1/15246090050118189.pd

    Bringing Structure to the Wave Energy Innovation Process with the Development of a Techno-Economic Tool

    Current wave energy development initiatives assume that available designs have the potential for success through continuous learning and innovation-based cost reduction. However, this may not be the case, and potential winning technologies may have been overlooked. The scenario creation tool presented in this paper provides a structured method for the earliest stages of design in technology development. The core function of the scenario creation tool is to generate and rank scenarios of potential Wave Energy Converter (WEC) attributes and inform the user on the areas of the parameter space that are most likely to yield commercial success. This techno-economic tool uses a structured innovation approach to identify commercially attractive and technically achievable scenarios, with a scoring system based on their power performance and costs. This is done by leveraging performance and cost data from state-of-the-art wave energy converters and identifying theoretical limits to define thresholds. As a result, a list of scored solutions is obtained depending on resource level, wave energy converter hull shape, size, material, degree of freedom for power extraction, and efficiency. This scenario creation tool can be used to support private and public investors to inform strategy for future funding calls, and technology developers and researchers in identifying new avenues of innovation

    Aim: Little is known about the self-rated health status of people with co-morbid autism and intellectual disabilities (ID) in whole country populations. This paper will present analysis of: self-rated general health status, demographic factors, and prevalence of other disabilities for people with co-morbid autism and ID, as well as people with autism only. Method: We analysed data from Scotland’s Census 2011, and generated descriptive statistics. Results: People with co-morbid autism and ID (n=5,709)comprised 0.1% of the total population of Scotland (n=5,295,403) and 18 .0% of the whole population of people with autism in Scotland(n=31,712) across all ages. Only 2,863 (50.1%) people with co-morbid autism and ID rated their health as good or very good, compared with 19,97 1 (76.8%) of all people with autism only. Conclusions: Health is poorer for people with c o-morbid autism and ID than for people with autism only.     Genomic identification of the long-chain alkenone producer in freshwater Lake Toyoni, Japan: implications for temperature reconstructions

    Identifying the lacustrine haptophyte species that produce long-chain alkenones (LCAs) is essential prior to down-core temperature reconstructions. Here, we investigated the identity of LCA-producing species from Lake Toyoni, Japan using 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and organic geochemical analyses. The rDNA analyses identified eighteen operational taxonomic units (OTUs) of which only one fell within the haptophyte phylotype. This haptophyte belongs to the Group I phylotype, as supported by the LCA distribution found in surface and down-core sediments, and is closely related to a haptophyte found in Lake BrayaSø (Greenland). The inferred temperature using the Greenland calibration is very close to the Lake Toyoni surface temperature recorded during the spring/early summer season, when the LCA-producing haptophyte is likely to bloom. We therefore suggest that the temperature calibration from the Lake BrayaSø, Greenland is a suitable calibration for down-core temperature reconstructions at Lake Toyoni
