    KryosphĂ€re – Gegenwart und Zukunft

    Im globalen Klimasystem hat die KryosphĂ€re – mit ihren Komponenten Schnee, Meereis, See- und Flusseis, Eisschilde, Gebirgsgletscher und Permafrost einen großen Einfluss auf den Energiehaushalt der ErdoberflĂ€che und auf die Wechselwirkungen an den GrenzflĂ€chen zwischen LandflĂ€chen, Ozeanen und der AtmosphĂ€re. Dies beruht u.a. auf ihren besonderen physikalischen Eigenschaften (u.a. der Eis-Albedo-RĂŒckkopplung) und ihrer großen FlĂ€che. FĂŒr den globalen Wasserhaushalt sind die in der KryosphĂ€re gebundenen Wassermengen von erheblicher Bedeutung. Zahlreiche internationale Forschungsprogramme sind vor dem Hintergrund des globalen Klimawandels auf die VerĂ€nderungen und die zukĂŒnftige Entwicklung vor allem des arktischen Meereises und der Eisschilde fokussiert. Neben den in-situ Beobachtungen und Fernerkundungsmethoden ermöglichen numerische Modelle einen tieferen Einblick in die Prozesse und Wechselwirkungen der KryosphĂ€re. Zu den aktuellen Forschungsfeldern gehören vor allem die Identifikation von Wechselwirkungen zwischen der KryosphĂ€re und dem globalen Klimasystem, die polaren Ökosysteme und die Verbesserung von Vorhersagen zukĂŒnftiger Änderungen innerhalb der KryosphĂ€re

    Simulation of Laptev Sea polynya dynamics using the FESOM model with different atmospheric forces

    The Laptev Sea polynyas play a key role for the shelf areas of the Siberian Arctic due to their impact on ice production. Changes in polynya dynamics result in modified fluxes of energy, momentum and matter in the atmosphere-ocean-sea ice system. An improved understanding and quantification of polynya effects in the Laptev Sea can be achieved by high-resolution sea ice-ocean models. Here we use the well-established Finite Element Sea Ice-Ocean Model FESOM (5 km x 5 km) (AWI Bremerhaven). It consists of a hydrostatic primitive-equation ocean model and a dynamic-thermodynamic sea ice model. In our study the model is forced by 6-hourly GME analyses (0.5° x 0.5°), daily and 6-hourly NCEP/NCAR reanalyses (2.5° x 2.5°) and hourly COSMO data (5 km x 5 km) to investigate a polynya event during the TRANSDRIFT winter experiment 2008. The input data consists of 10 m-wind, 2 m-temperature and specific humidity, total cloudiness and precipitation rate. In order to test the quality of the forcing data, comparisons with in-situ have been performed. They show shortcomings of the atmospheric analyses model data with respect to the daily course of the temperature, but very good agreement for the wind. The opening process of a main polynya event on 29 April 2008 is represented with all atmospheric forcing fields (except the daily NCEP data) in a similarly good way. However, there are differences in direction and velocity of the icedrift and in the location and development of the polynyas. Small-scale structures are best represented by applying the high-resolution COSMO data. The maximum sensible heat flux is 220 W/m2, the maximum latent heat flux is 120 W/m2, the maximum advective ice thickness reduction is 5 cm/h and the maximum thermal ice thickness production is 5 mm/h

    Arctic smoke - aerosol characteristics during a record smoke event in the European Arctic and its radiative impact

    In early May 2006 a record high air pollution event was observed at Ny-Ålesund, Spitsbergen. An atypical weather pattern established a pathway for the rapid transport of biomass burning aerosols from agricultural fires in Eastern Europe to the Arctic. Atmospheric stability was such that the smoke was constrained to low levels, within 2 km of the surface during the transport. A description of this smoke event in terms of transport and main aerosol characteristics can be found in Stohl et al. (2007). This study puts emphasis on the radiative effect of the smoke. The aerosol number size distribution was characterised by lognormal parameters as having an accumulation mode centered around 165–185 nm and almost 1.6 for geometric standard deviation of the mode. Nucleation and small Aitken mode particles were almost completely suppressed within the smoke plume measured at Ny-Ålesund. Chemical and microphysical aerosol information obtained at Mt. Zeppelin (474 m a.s.l) was used to derive input parameters for a one-dimensional radiation transfer model to explore the radiative effects of the smoke. The daily mean heating rate calculated on 2 May 2006 for the average size distribution and measured chemical composition reached 0.55 K day−1 at 0.5 km altitude for the assumed external mixture of the aerosols but showing much higher heating rates for an internal mixture (1.7 K day−1). In comparison a case study for March 2000 showed that the local climatic effects due to Arctic haze, using a regional climate model, HIRHAM, amounts to a maximum of 0.3 K day−1 of heating at 2 km altitude (Treffeisen et al., 2005)

    Observations of supercooling and frazil ice formation in the Laptev Sea coastal polynya

    This paper examines a hydrographic response to the wind‐driven coastal polynya activity over the southeastern Laptev Sea shelf for April–May 2008, using a combination of Environmental Satellite (Envisat) advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) and TerraSAR‐X satellite imagery, aerial photography, meteorological data, and SBE‐37 salinity‐temperature‐depth and acoustic Doppler current profiler land‐fast ice edgemoored instruments. When ASAR observed the strongest end‐of‐April polynya event with frazil ice formation, the moored instruments showed maximal acoustical scattering within the surface mixed layer, and the seawater temperatures were either at or 0.02°C below freezing. We also find evidence of the persistent orizontal temperature and salinity gradients across the fast ice edge to have the signature of geostrophic flow adjustment as predicted by polynya models

    Low frequency current oscillations and topographic waves in the Strait of Georgia

    Chang (1976, see also Chang, Tabata, and Pond, 1976) has shown that up to 46% of the kinetic energy associated with horizontal motions in the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, is contained in broad-banded, low-frequency current oscillations characterised by periods ranging from 4 to over 100 days. The purpose of this thesis is to present a simple dynamical model which may provide a partial explanation of these oscillations. The Strait of Georgia is modelled by an infinitely long, rectangular channel with a bottom that slopes upward to the east. Two choices of the density stratification are studied: (1) a two-layer system and, (2) a system with constant Brunt-VÀisÀlÀ frequency. Both models admit northward-travelling topographic planetary waves with periods that lie in the observed range. However these models do not accurately predict the vertical distribution of horizontal kinetic energy. In addition several general theorems regarding phase and energy propagation and the vertical structure of these waves in a system with arbitrary continuous stratification are proven.     On the inertial stability of coastal flows

    This thesis investigates two separate but related problems. In Part I a study is made of the propagation of continental shelf waves and barotropic Rossby waves in a steady, laterally sheared current of the form V + Є W, where W is a centred random function and Є << 1. If the correlation length of W is small compared with the characteristic horizontal length scale of the system; for example, the shelf width or a channel width, the waves are unstable. Their growth rate is largely determined by the magnitude of the correlation length, while the phase speed is given by the sum of weighted averages of the mean current V and the lateral gradient of potential vorticity. Application of the theory to the Brooks and Mooers (1977a) model of the Florida Straits yields wave parameters that are in accord with those measured by Duing (1975). In Part II, an attempt is made to understand the dynamics governing observed low-frequency currents in the Strait of Georgia (GS). A simple two-layer model indicates that the mean currents in GS are probably baroclinically stable. A barotropic stability model implies that a shear instability might be of some importance. However, the analysis of current meter data shows that the velocity components of the fluctuations are either nearly in phase or close to 180° out of phase; this means that the motions are not due to the type of waves considered here. Analysis of the relationship between the winds and currents in both the frequency and time domains implies that the wind may play an indirect role in forcing GS motions. It is conjectured that the wind and tide interact with the Fraser River outflow to modulate the estuarine circulation in the system and force low-frequency currents.     In the course of the European Council Directive on permissible air pollutant limit values, valid starting from 2005 there is an urgent call for action, particularly for fine dust (PM10). Current investigations (Junk &amp; Helbig 2003, Reuter &amp; building Mueller 2003) show that the limit values in certain places in congested areas are exceeded. Only if it is possible to located these Hot Spots purposeful measures to reduce the ambient air pollution can be conducted. For an efficient identification of these Hot Spots complex computer models or establishing special measurements networks are to expensive. Using the statistical model STREET 5,0 (KTT 2003) a cost-effective screening of the air pollution situation caused by the traffic can be done. STREET is based on the 3-dimensional micro-scale non-hydrostatic flow- and dispersion model MISCAM (Eichhorn 1989). The results of over 100.000 different calculations with MISCAM are stored in a Database und these result are used to calculate the emissions with STREET. In collaboration with the city council more than 100 streets were investigated, mapped, and calculated. A special urban climate measuring network supplies the necessary meteorological input data about the wind filed and precipitation events in the valley of the Moselle. Information about road width and road orientation as well as building density were derived from aerial photographs. Traffic censuses and mobile air pollutants measurements with our instrument van supplied the remaining input data. We calculated the mean annual air pollutant concentrations for NO 2 , NO, CO, SO 2 , O 3 , benzene as well as PM10.     Simulation of Laptev Sea polynya dynamics using the FESOM model with different atmospheric forcings

    The Laptev Sea polynyas play a key role for the shelf areas of the Siberian Arctic due to their impact on ice production. Changes in polynya dynamics result in modified fluxes of energy, momentum and matter in the atmosphere-ocean-sea ice system. An improved understanding and quantification of polynya effects in the Laptev Sea can be achieved by high-resolution sea ice-ocean models. Here we use the well-established Finite Element Sea Ice-Ocean Model FESOM (5 km x 5 km) (AWI Bremerhaven). It consists of a hydrostatic primitive-equation ocean model and a dynamic-thermodynamic sea ice model. In our study the model is forced by 6-hourly GME analyses (0.5° x 0.5°), daily and 6-hourly NCEP/NCAR reanalyses (2.5° x 2.5°) and hourly COSMO data (5 km x 5 km) to investigate a polynya event during the TRANSDRIFT winter experiment 2008. The input data consists of 10 m-wind, 2 m-temperature and specific humidity, total cloudiness and precipitation rate. In order to test the quality of the forcing data, comparisons with in-situ have been performed. They show shortcomings of the atmospheric analyses model data with respect to the daily course of the temperature, but very good agreement for the wind. The opening process of a main polynya event on 29 April 2008 is represented with all atmospheric forcing fields (except the daily NCEP data) in a similarly good way. However, there are differences in direction and velocity of the icedrift and in the location and development of the polynyas. Small-scale structures are best represented by applying the high-resolution COSMO data. The maximum sensible heat flux is 220 W/m2, the maximum latent heat flux is 120 W/m2, the maximum advective ice thickness reduction is 5 cm/h and the maximum thermal ice thickness production is 5 mm/h
