Towards a catalog of spreadsheet smells
Spreadsheets are considered to be the most widely used programming language in the world, and reports have shown that 90% of real-world spreadsheets contain errors. In this work, we try to identify spreadsheet smells, a concept adapted from software, which consists of a surface indication that usually corresponds to a deeper problem. Our smells have been integrated in a tool, and were computed for a large spreadsheet repository. Finally, the analysis of the results we obtained led to the refinement of our initial catalog
Understanding the dynamics of product software development using the concept of coevolution
The context in which software is developed
determines its evolution. Specifically for software developed as a
product by startups, the uncertainty of market, platform and
team not only determine the evolution of the product, but also of
the process. During the lifecycle of the product the organization
changes and different product improvement and process
improvement patterns can be observed. With this in mind the
Abernathy and Utterback dynamic innovation model proves to be
an applicable view for the evolution of product software and its
process. In this paper we introduce this theoretical model as a
basis for further research in the co-evolution of product software
development. Based on an anecdotal case study of a Software-asa-
Service product an example of the co-evolution of process and
product in the software product industry is provided

Incorporating Application Dependent Information in an Automatic Code Generating Environment
In this paper, we demonstrate the necessity of including high-level information for automatic generation of efficient codes for serial, vector, and parallel computer architectures with the Ctadel code generation tool. The Ctadel Codegeneration Tool for Applications based on Differential Equations using high-level Language specifications is a programming environment developed for the generation of efficient codes for PDE-based problems. The tool has been adopted as an application driver for the hirlam numerical weather forecast system. More specifically, we present a framework for high-level code restructuring based on monotonicity information about the data structures used. This information is not available in state-of-the-art vectorizing and parallelizing compilers but it is of vital importance for the generation of efficient architecture-specific codes. The performance of the generated codes for a typical example problem encountered in the so-called physics routines of the hirlam sys..
