NPAS4 recruits CCK basket cell synapses and enhances cannabinoid-sensitive inhibition in the mouse hippocampus.
Experience-dependent expression of immediate-early gene transcription factors (IEG-TFs) can transiently change the transcriptome of active neurons and initiate persistent changes in cellular function. However, the impact of IEG-TFs on circuit connectivity and function is poorly understood. We investigate the specificity with which the IEG-TF NPAS4 governs experience-dependent changes in inhibitory synaptic input onto CA1 pyramidal neurons (PNs). We show that novel sensory experience selectively enhances somatic inhibition mediated by cholecystokinin-expressing basket cells (CCKBCs) in an NPAS4-dependent manner. NPAS4 specifically increases the number of synapses made onto PNs by individual CCKBCs without altering synaptic properties. Additionally, we find that sensory experience-driven NPAS4 expression enhances depolarization-induced suppression of inhibition (DSI), a short-term form of cannabinoid-mediated plasticity expressed at CCKBC synapses. Our results indicate that CCKBC inputs are a major target of the NPAS4-dependent transcriptional program in PNs and that NPAS4 is an important regulator of plasticity mediated by endogenous cannabinoids
Fluctuations from dissipation in a hot non-Abelian plasma
We consider a transport equation of the Boltzmann-Langevin type for
non-Abelian plasmas close to equilibrium to derive the spectral functions of
the underlying microscopic fluctuations from the entropy. The correlator of the
stochastic source is obtained from the dissipative processes in the plasma.
This approach, based on classical transport theory, exploits the well-known
link between a linearized collision integral, the entropy and the spectral
functions. Applied to the ultra-soft modes of a hot non-Abelian (classical or
quantum) plasma, the resulting spectral functions agree with earlier findings
obtained from the microscopic theory. As a by-product, it follows that
B\"odeker's effective theory is consistent with the fluctuation-dissipation

Situs inversus abdominalis and duodenal atresia. A case report and review of the literature
Fewer than 20 patients born with situs inversus and duodenal atresia have been reported in the literature. We present a patient with this condition. A newborn baby presented shortly after birth with persistent bilious vomiting. An abdominal radiograph showed a right-sided stomach bubble and a second bubble on the left - typical of duodenal atresia but with mirror image configuration. Laparotomy confirmed the diagnosis of situs inversus abdominalis, which was also demonstrated by contrast studies and ultrasound. Duodenoduodenostomy was performed and the patient discharged on day 8 postoperatively. Situs inversus is associated with other congenital malformations including splenic malformations, left-sided liver and cardiac abnormalities; it is rarely associated with duodenal atresia. Duodenal obstruction in the presence of situs inversus has been described, including obstruction due to a web, stenosis, pre-duodenal portal vein and complete atresia. The patient presented in this paper had a duodenal web in the second part of the duodenum. Before undertaking surgery it is important to establish the presence of associated gastrointestinal and cardiac abnormalities
Mean Field Dynamics in Non-Abelian Plasmas from Classical Transport Theory
Based on classical transport theory, we present a general set of covariant
equations describing the dynamics of mean fields and their statistical
fluctuations in a non-Abelian plasma in or out-of-equilibrium. A procedure to
obtain the collision integrals for the Boltzmann equation from the microscopic
theory is described. As an application, we study a hot non-Abelian plasma close
to equilibrium, where the fluctuations are integrated out explicitly. For soft

Influence on Habitual versus Goal-Directed Decision Making
Different systems for habitual versus goal-directed control are thought to
underlie human decision-making. Working memory is known to shape these
decision-making systems and their interplay, and is known to support goal-
directed decision making even under stress. Here, we investigated if and how
decision systems are differentially influenced by breaks filled with diverse
everyday life activities known to modulate working memory performance. We used
a within-subject design where young adults listened to music and played a
video game during breaks interleaved with trials of a sequential two-step
Markov decision task, designed to assess habitual as well as goal-directed
decision making. Based on a neurocomputational model of task performance, we
observed that for individuals with a rather limited working memory capacity
video gaming as compared to music reduced reliance on the goal-directed
decision-making system, while a rather large working memory capacity prevented
such a decline. Our findings suggest differential effects of everyday
activities on key decision-making processes
Comparative efficacies of imipenem, oxacillin and vancomycin for therapy of chronic foreign body infection due to methicillin-susceptible and -resistant Staphylococcus aureus
The efficacies of imipenem when directed against methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains of Staphylococcus aureus were compared with those of oxacillin and vancomycin in a subcutaneous rat model, using chronically infected tissue cages. At three weeks after inoculation, stable chronic infections were established with average bacterial counts exceeding 106cfu/mL tissue cage fluid for both strains. Intraperitoneal administration (twice a day for 7 days) of imipenem (80 mg/kg) or oxacillin (200 mg/kg) produced peak levels of 23 or 45 mg/L and trough levels of < 0â
1 and 5â
7 mg/L, respectively. The therapeutic regimens of either imipenem (P < 0â
001) or oxacillin (P < 0â
02) administered for 7 days led to significant reductions in bacterial counts in the tissue cage fluids of animals chronically infected with MSSA. In contrast, imipenem was not effective against chronic MRSA tissue cage infections, despite the relatively low MIC of the infecting strain and the use of high dose (120 mg/kg) therapy. Differential effects of wakeful rest, music and video game playing on working memory performance in the n-back task
The interruption of learning processes by breaks filled with diverse activities is common in everyday life. We investigated the effects of active computer gaming and passive relaxation (rest and music) breaks on working memory performance. Young adults were exposed to breaks involving (i) eyes-open resting, (ii) listening to music and (iii) playing the video game âAngry Birdsâ before performing the n-back working memory task. Based on linear mixed-effects modeling, we found that playing the âAngry Birdsâ video game during a short learning break led to a decline in task performance over the course of the task as compared to eyes-open resting and listening to music, although overall task performance was not impaired. This effect was associated with high levels of daily mind wandering and low self-reported ability to concentrate. These findings indicate that video games can negatively affect working memory performance over time when played in between learning tasks. We suggest further investigation of these effects because of their relevance to everyday activity.Peer Reviewe
Atmospheric observation-based global SF6 emissions - comparison of top-down and bottom-up estimates
Emissions of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), one of the strongest greenhouse gases on a per molecule basis, are targeted to be collectively reduced under the Kyoto Protocol. Because of its long atmospheric lifetime (â3000 years), the accumulation of SF6 in the atmosphere is a direct measure of its global emissions. Examination of our extended data set of globally distributed high-precision SF6 observations shows an increase in SF6 abundance from near zero in the 1970s to a global mean of 6.7 ppt by the end of 2008. In-depth evaluation of our long-term data records shows that the global source of SF6 decreased after 1995, most likely due to SF6 emission reductions in industrialised countries, but increased again after 1998. By subtracting those emissions reported by Annex I countries to the United Nations Framework Convention of Climatic Change (UNFCCC) from our observation-inferred SF6 source leaves a surprisingly large gap of more than 70â80% of non-reported SF6 emissions in the last decade
