Birefringence Measurements on Crystalline Silicon
Crystalline silicon has been proposed as a new test mass material in third
generation gravitational wave detectors such as the Einstein Telescope (ET).
Birefringence can reduce the interferometric contrast and can produce dynamical
disturbances in interferometers. In this work we use the method of
polarisation-dependent resonance frequency analysis of Fabry-Perot-cavities
containing silicon as a birefringent medium. Our measurements show a
birefringence of silicon along the (111) axis of the order of at a laser wavelength of 1550nm and room temperature. A model
is presented that explains the results of different settings of our
measurements as a superposition of elastic strains caused by external stresses
in the sample and plastic strains possibly generated during the production
process. An application of our theory on the proposed ET test mass geometry
suggests no critical effect on birefringence due to elastic strains.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, 2 table
Mechanical losses in low loss materials studied by Cryogenic Resonant Acoustic spectroscopy of bulk materials (CRA spectroscopy)
Mechanical losses of crystalline silicon and calcium fluoride have been
analyzed in the temperature range from 5 to 300 K by our novel mechanical
spectroscopy method, cryogenic resonant acoustic spectroscopy of bulk materials
(CRA spectrocopy). The focus lies on the interpretation of the measured data
according to phonon-phonon interactions and defect induced losses in
consideration of the excited mode shape.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, proceedings of the PHONONS 2007, submitted to

Thermisches Rauschen in interferometrischen Gravitationswellendetektoren

School-Based Agricultural Education Studentsâ Attitudes and Beliefs toward International Agricultural Concepts
The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes and beliefs of school-based agriculture education (SBAE) students toward international agricultural concepts. This study builds on several previous studies (Conner, Greer, & Stripling, 2017; Elliot & Yanik, 2002; Heinert, Lavery, & Roberts, 2014; Radhakrishna, Leite, & Domer, 2003). To explore new geographic regions of the United States, two states, one from the Midwest and one from the Northwest, were purposively identified. A 46-item instrument that measures attitudes, beliefs, understanding, and instruction in relation to international agriculture developed by Radhakrishna et al. (2003) was administered to students in three schools representing both rural and urban areas. A total of 133 surveys were returned, for a 55.2% response rate. Overall, students held positive attitudes and beliefs toward international agricultural concepts. Students expressed a need to understand basic geography in relation to international agricultural concepts, and students strongly agreed to concepts and information necessary to understand international agricultural concepts. When historical data were synthesized with data from this study, mean scores from all five studies across all four constructs were consistently high. Future research should focus on how students develop their attitudes and beliefs about international agriculture
Potential mechanical loss mechanisms in bulk materials for future gravitational wave detectors
Low mechanical loss materials are needed to further decrease thermal noise in
upcoming gravitational wave detectors. We present an analysis of the
contribution of Akhieser and thermoelastic damping on the experimental results
of resonant mechanical loss measurements. The combination of both processes
allows the fit of the experimental data of quartz in the low temperature region
(10 K to 25 K). A fully anisotropic numerical calculation over a wide
temperature range (10 K to 300 K) reveals, that thermoelastic damping is not a
dominant noise source in bulk silicon samples. The anisotropic numerical
calculation is sucessfully applied to the estimate of thermoelastic noise of an
advanced LIGO sized silicon test mass.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Journal of Physics: Conference

A New Bound on Excess Frequency Noise in Second Harmonic Generation in PPKTP at the 10^-19 Level
We report a bound on the relative frequency fluctuations in nonlinear second
harmonic generation. A 1064nm Nd:YAG laser is used to read out the phase of a
Mach-Zehnder interferometer while PPKTP, a nonlinear crystal, is placed in each
arm to generate second harmonic light. By comparing the arm length difference
of the Mach Zehnder as read out by the fundamental 1064 nm light, and its
second harmonic at 532 nm, we can bound the excess frequency noise introduced
in the harmonic generation process. We report an amplitude spectral density of
frequency noise with total RMS frequency deviation of 3mHz and a minimum value
of 20 {\mu}Hz/rtHz over 250 seconds with a measurement bandwidth of 128 Hz,
corresponding to an Allan deviation of 10^-19 at 20 seconds.Comment: Submitted to Optics Express June 201
