Masentunut hahmo komediassa

Tämä opinnäytetyö tutkii depression ja komedian yhdistämistä. Tarkemmin, masentuneen hahmon kirjoittamista koomiseen viitekehykseen. Tutkimus analysoi depressiosta kärsivän hahmon kirjoittamiseen liittyviä ongelmakohtia ja mahdollisuuksia. Esimerkkisarjojen ja elokuvien avulla pyritään tuomaan esille näitä mahdollisuuksia ja keinoja. Ensimmäisessä osassa määritellään termit ”masennus” sekä lyhyesti ”komedia”, jotta lukija voi sen jälkeen saada mahdollisimman paljon irti itse tutkimuksesta ja esimerkeistä. Masennuksen teoriaan ja oireisiin paneudutaan, jotta lukija ymmärtää yhteyden arkitodellisuuden ja fiktion välittämän esimerkin välillä. Tutkimuksen seuraavassa osassa käydään läpi viisi esimerkkitapausta, jotka ovat joko tv-sarjoja, elokuvia tai kohtauksia elokuvista. Viimeisessä, soveltavammassa osiossa, käsitellään erilaisia keinoja, joita kirjoittaja voi ottaa käyttöönsä luodessaan masentunutta hahmoa. Tämän tutkimuksen myötä käyät ilmi depression eri ulottuvuudet komedian käytössä. Ratkaisuja tarjotaan haasteisiin, joita passiivisen ja sisäänpäin kääntyneen hahmon kirjoittaminen voi tarjota. Lisäksi soveltavassa osassa sekä esimerkkitapauksissa, käsitellään sitä, miten depressio tuodaan esiin sen kuitenkaan peittämättä hahmon omaa luonnetta. Lopulta käydään läpi masennuksen ymmärtämisen suhdetta sille nauramiseen.This thesis studies the marriage between depression and comedy. More accurately, writing a depressive character in a comedic context. The study analyzes the problems and possibilities that arise in writing a character that is suffering from depression. Methods and possibilities are brought to light via analysis of several examples of film and series. In the first part, the terms ‘depression’ and ‘comedy’ are made clear in order for the reader to be able to better utilize the contents of this study and the examples. The theory of depression and it’s symptoms are analysed so the reader will understand the reality and the fictional sides of depression. In the next part, five different movie or tv-serie-examples are put under the magnifying glass. In the final chapter, the different methods of writing a functional depressed character, are thoroughly examined. This study will reveal the different dimensions that depression has to offer for comedy. Solutions are offered in how to make a inwards-focused and passive character a dynamic one. Also discussed in the third part, as well as in the examples, are the means to exposing a character’s depression without it blocking out the true nature of the character. Small corpus, great institution - and an attempt to understand them

The New Year\u27;s speech by the President of the Republic is one of the most important political speeches in Finland. We have gathered all the speeches from 1935 to 2007 into a corpus containing the speeches in writing. Our objective is to explore what the speeches are like in terms of linguistic choices and as a set or type of texts. We are also interested in the social dimensions of the speeches and the ideological meanings produced in them. This paper presents an analysis of our research questions and methods of analysis, rather than going into empirical results. We present the method and project we have decided to call "Teko\u27; (from text to corpus), based on the compilation and structuring of small, mutually comparable corpora, as well as on detailed quantitative (corpus linguistic) and qualitative analysis (based on text analysis, applying, e.g., the process analysis of the Systemic Functional Grammar). We are considering the following research positions and questions of analysis related to them: the uniformity of the speeches as compared to another set of texts, i.e. that of news (e.g. based on their morphological features that have been analysed semiautomatically), the internal uniformity of the speeches judging by how the speakers refer to themselves (differences arising from the speakers on the one hand and the topics on the other hand) and the uniformity of the speeches on the basis of process analysis (distribution of processes by presidents and topics). Our fundamental question in this paper is how the quantitative analysis of a small corpus can be connected to a qualitative analysis of individual texts
