    Identifying Advantages and Disadvantages of Variable Rate Irrigation – An Updated Review

    Variable rate irrigation (VRI) sprinklers on mechanical move irrigation systems (center pivot or lateral move) have been commercially available since 2004. Although the number of VRI, zone or individual sprinkler, systems adopted to date is lower than expected there is a continued interest to harness this technology, especially when climate variability, regulatory nutrient management, water conservation policies, and declining water for agriculture compound the challenges involved for irrigated crop production. This article reviews the potential advantages and potential disadvantages of VRI technology for moving sprinklers, provides updated examples on such aspects, suggests a protocol for designing and implementing VRI technology and reports on the recent advancements. The advantages of VRI technology are demonstrated in the areas of agronomic improvement, greater economic returns, environmental protection and risk management, while the main drawbacks to VRI technology include the complexity to successfully implement the technology and the lack of evidence that it assures better performance in net profit or water savings. Although advances have been made in VRI technologies, its penetration into the market will continue to depend on tangible and perceived benefits by producers

    Water effects on optical canopy sensing for late-season site-specific nitrogen management of maize

    The interpretation of optical canopy sensor readings for determining optimal rates of late-season site-specific nitrogen application to corn (Zea mays L.) can be complicated by spatially variable water sufficiency, which can also affect canopy size and/or pigmentation. In 2017 and 2018, corn following corn and corn following soybeans were subjected to irrigation×nitrogen fertilizer treatments in west central Nebraska, USA, to induce variable water sufficiency and variable nitrogen sufficiency. The vegetation index-sensor combinations investigated were the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the normalized difference red edge index (NDRE), and the reflectance ratio of near infrared minus red edge over near infrared minus red (DATT) using ACS-430 active optical sensors; NDVI using SRSNDVI passive optical sensors; and red brightness and a proprietary index using commercial aerial visible imagery. Among these combinations, NDRE and DATT were found to be the most suitable for assessing nitrogen sufficiency within irrigation levels. While DATT was the least sensitive to variable water sufficiency, DATT still tended to decrease with decreasing water sufficiency in high nitrogen treatments, whereas the effect of water sufficiency on DATT was inconsistent in low nitrogen treatments. A new method of quantifying nitrogen sufficiency while accounting for water sufficiency was proposed and generally provided more consistent improvement over the mere averaging of water effects as compared with the canopy chlorophyll content index method. Further elucidation and better handling of water-nitrogen interactions and confounding are expected to become increasingly important as the complexity, automation, and adoption of sensor-based irrigation and nitrogen management increase

    Integration of hydrogeophysical datasets and empirical orthogonal functions for improved irrigation water management

    Precision agriculture offers the technologies to manage for infield variability and incorporate variability into irrigation management decisions. The major limitation of this technology often lies in the reconciliation of disparate data sources and the generation of irrigation prescription maps. Here the authors explore the utility of the cosmic-ray neutron probe (CRNP) which measures volumetric soil water content (SWC) in the top ~ 30 cm of the soil profile. The key advantages of CRNP is that the sensor is passive, non-invasive, mobile and soil temperature-invariant, making data collection more compatible with existing farm operations and extending the mapping period. The objectives of this study were to: (1) improve the delineation of irrigation management zones within a field and (2) estimate spatial soil hydraulic properties to make effective irrigation prescriptions. Ten CRNP SWC surveys were collected in a 53-ha field in Nebraska. The SWC surveys were analyzed using Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOFs) to isolate the underlying spatial structure. A statistical bootstrapping analysis confirmed the CRNP + EOF provided superior soil hydraulic property estimates, compared to other hydrogeophysical datasets, when linearly correlated to laboratory measured soil hydraulic properties (field capacity estimates reduced 20–25% in root mean square error). The authors propose a soil sampling strategy for better quantifying soil hydraulic properties using CRNP + EOF methods. Here, five CRNP surveys and 6–8 sample locations for laboratory analysis were sufficient to describe the spatial distribution of soil hydraulic properties within this field. While the proposed strategy may increase overall effort, rising scrutiny for agricultural water-use could make this technology cost-effective

    Pumpage Reduction by using Variable Rate Irrigation to Mine Undepleted Soil Water

    Conventional irrigation schedules are typically based on portions of the field where root zones hold the least available soil water. This leaves undepleted available water in areas with larger water holding capacities. The undepleted water could be used through variable-rate irrigation (VRI) management; however, the benefits of VRI without in-field mapping are unexamined. In this research, the field-averaged amount of undepleted available soil water in the root zone was calculated from the NRCS Soil Survey Geographic database for 49,224 center-pivot irrigated fields in Nebraska. Potential reductions in pumpage from mining undepleted available water were then estimated. Results of the analysis show that widespread adoption of zone control VRI technology based only on the pumping savings from mining undepleted available water may be unwarranted for current VRI costs and average pumping energy expenses in the Central Plains (0.0026m−3to0.0026 m-3 to 0.0947 m-3). Pumpage reductions exceeded 51 mm year-1 for only 2% of the fields and exceeded 25 mm year-1 for 13% of the fields; thus, reductions may be small compared to annual pumpage requirements. If VRI were im-plemented on all fields with a potential pumpage reduction greater than 51 or 25 mm year-1, the volume of pumpage reduction would be approximately 0.35% or 1.3%, respectively, of the total irrigation pumpage in Nebraska. These data may be a conservative estimate of pumpage reduction in fields where the measured variability in soil properties exceeds that described by the NRCS Soil Survey, or if undepleted water is mined early in the season and the soil water profile is refilled by precipitation, allowing undepleted water to be mined again. Adoption of zone control VRI is most feasible for fields where the pumpage reduction from VRI is large and pumping costs are above normal. Pivot fields with high un-depleted water were sparsely distributed across Nebraska and were often located along streams and or in associated alluvial areas. The prevalence of fields with large quantities of undepleted water differed among and within soil associations. We were unable to assign feasibility of VRI based on the soil association, as the occurrence of undepleted water varied significantly within a soil association. These findings should assist producers and other entities interested in VRI technology; however, pumpage reduction through use of undepleted soil water is only one benefit of VRI technology and management. Producers are encouraged to consider all potential benefits when analyzing VRI investments

    In most medical specialties the success rate and outcome of treatment coincide and can be measured immediately. This is not the case for radiotherapy where debilitating of even lethal side effects may show up as late as 18 years after treatment. To determine the outcome or therapeutic ratio of radiotherapy, it is therefore necessary to link tumour control closely to the actuarial long-term disease free survival of the patient.The therapeutic window for radiotherapy is narrow. In walking the tightrope between cure and complications, radiotherapy can put the odds at its side. As a precautionary measure, strict quality assurance measures including the monitoring of side effects need to be put in place. Recent studies have demonstrated that every gain in the accuracy of the beam output and treatment delivery is translated into important gains in the uncomplicated cure probability, thus sparing the lives of thousands of patients every year. QA will become all the more mandatory now that new technological developments allow much more precision in the delivery of the intended dose to the intended target volume, thus making an escalation of the dose and hence the improvement of the cancer cure rata possible.Europe has only half the number of treatment units of America and Japan. However, it has also its own strengths. These are exactly in the field of quality assurance and education. ESTRO has become a world leader in the provision of teaching in the field of radiotherapy. The ESTRO teaching programme commands the admiration and even the envy of the International radiation oncology community. We need to capitalise on this achievement and keep it at the cutting edge of scientific and technological progress to offset, through the development of the human potential and optima) use of capital-intensive infrastructural resources, at least partially the shortage in capital investment and the past shortfall in spending for research.For this reason ESTRO is embarking on an ambitious new project called ESQUIRE (Education, Science and Quality Assurance In Radiotherapy in Europe) which it hopes to realise with the support of EU funding. The aim of this project is to increase the confidence level of clinicians for embracing optimised RT treatment regimes by making sure they can be introduced without an increase in severe side effects. Actions proposed for this purpose: monitoring the accuracy of the dose (Talk 1:E∼UAL) and the side effects (Task 2: REACT), by stepping up education for the implementation of new technology (Task 3: EDRO,) by developing quality assurance procedures for optimised RT (Task 5: QUASIMODO) and brachytherapy (Task 6: BRAPHY∼S), and establishing a procedure-based surveillance of quality in treatment and research (Task 4:EPOQART)

    Low Density Lipoprotein Receptor-Related Protein 1 Dependent Endosomal Trapping and Recycling of Apolipoprotein E

    BACKGROUND: Lipoprotein receptors from the low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor family are multifunctional membrane proteins which can efficiently mediate endocytosis and thereby facilitate lipoprotein clearance from the plasma. The biggest member of this family, the LDL receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1), facilitates the hepatic uptake of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRL) via interaction with apolipoprotein E (apoE). In contrast to the classical LDL degradation pathway, TRL disintegrate in peripheral endosomes, and core lipids and apoB are targeted along the endocytic pathway for lysosomal degradation. Notably, TRL-derived apoE remains within recycling endosomes and is then mobilized by high density lipoproteins (HDL) for re-secretion. The aim of this study is to investigate the involvement of LRP1 in the regulation of apoE recycling. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Immunofluorescence studies indicate the LRP1-dependent trapping of apoE in EEA1-positive endosomes in human hepatoma cells. This processing is distinct from other LRP1 ligands such as RAP which is efficiently targeted to lysosomal compartments. Upon stimulation of HDL-induced recycling, apoE is released from LRP1-positive endosomes but is targeted to another, distinct population of early endosomes that contain HDL, but not LRP1. For subsequent analysis of the recycling capacity, we expressed the full-length human LRP1 and used an RNA interference approach to manipulate the expression levels of LRP1. In support of LRP1 determining the intracellular fate of apoE, overexpression of LRP1 significantly stimulated HDL-induced apoE recycling. Vice versa LRP1 knockdown in HEK293 cells and primary hepatocytes strongly reduced the efficiency of HDL to stimulate apoE secretion. CONCLUSION: We conclude that LRP1 enables apoE to accumulate in an early endosomal recycling compartment that serves as a pool for the intracellular formation and subsequent re-secretion of apoE-enriched HDL particles

    Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is the major risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Among other functions, APOE is proposed to sequester neurotoxic amyloid-{beta} (A{beta}) peptides in the brain, delivering them to cellular catabolism via neuronal APOE receptors. Still, the receptors involved in this process remain controversial. Here, we identified the pro-neurotrophin receptor sortilin as major endocytic pathway for clearance of APOE/A{beata} complexes in neurons. Sortilin binds APOE with high affinity. Lack of receptor expression in mice results in accumulation of APOE and of A{beta} in the brain and in aggravated plaque burden. Also, primary neurons lacking sortilin exhibit significantly impaired uptake of APOE/A{beta} complexes despite proper expression of other APOE receptors. Despite higher than normal brain APOE levels, sortilin-deficient animals display anomalies in brain lipid metabolism (e.g., accumulation of sulfatides) seen in APOE-deficient mice, indicating functional deficiency in cellular APOE uptake pathways. Together, our findings identified sortilin as an essential neuronal pathway for APOE-containing lipoproteins in vivo and suggest an intriguing link between A{beta} catabolism and pro-neurotrophin signaling converging on this receptor

    Comparative analysis between condom use clusters and risk behaviours among portuguese university students

    The research on condom use has been focused on high-risk individuals, paying less attention to those who have moderate risk or safe sexual conducts. In order to design accurate interventions, potential differences among the condom use behavior groups must be considered. The goal was to assess possible differences in individuals presenting different types of risk behavior. 140 heterosexual university students answered a self-reported questionnaire about their sexual history, condom use habits, sexual self-esteem, sexual satisfaction, sexual control, attitudes towards condoms, self-efficacy to condom use, and emotions and feelings during sexual intercourse. A cluster analysis was conducted using the results about condom use and risk behaviors. Three groups with different risk levels emerged, presenting differences over sexual self-efficacy, attitudes towards condoms, socio-demographic variables, and sexual history. The results suggest the condom use inconsistency is highly associated with other risk behaviors but the contrary does not necessarily happens. Condom use consistent users also presented risk behaviors as smoking and drinking. The group differences suggest the risks were more affected by the combination of lack of skills with a negative attitude toward condoms than by contextual or personal variables. These differences sustain the need of an intervention adjusted to the individual's risk levels, since they differ on skills and beliefs that may hinder or promote the adoption of health behaviors.Foundation for Science and Technology/Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia (Portugal)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Macular Telangiectasia Type 2: A Classification System Using MultiModal Imaging MacTel Project Report Number 10

    Purpose: To develop a severity classification for macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel) disease using multimodal imaging. Design: An algorithm was used on data from a prospective natural history study of MacTel for classification development. Subjects: A total of 1733 participants enrolled in an international natural history study of MacTel. Methods: The Classification and Regression Trees (CART), a predictive nonparametric algorithm used in machine learning, analyzed the features of the multimodal imaging important for the development of a classification, including reading center gradings of the following digital images: stereoscopic color and red-free fundus photographs, fluorescein angiographic images, fundus autofluorescence images, and spectral-domain (SD)-OCT images. Regression models that used least square method created a decision tree using features of the ocular images into different categories of disease severity. Main Outcome Measures: The primary target of interest for the algorithm development by CART was the change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at baseline for the right and left eyes. These analyses using the algorithm were repeated for the BCVA obtained at the last study visit of the natural history study for the right and left eyes. Results: The CART analyses demonstrated 3 important features from the multimodal imaging for the classification: OCT hyper-reflectivity, pigment, and ellipsoid zone loss. By combining these 3 features (as absent, present, noncentral involvement, and central involvement of the macula), a 7-step scale was created, ranging from excellent to poor visual acuity. At grade 0, 3 features are not present. At the most severe grade, pigment and exudative neovascularization are present. To further validate the classification, using the Generalized Estimating Equation regression models, analyses for the annual relative risk of progression over a period of 5 years for vision loss and for progression along the scale were performed. Conclusions: This analysis using the data from current imaging modalities in participants followed in the MacTel natural history study informed a classification for MacTel disease severity featuring variables from SD-OCT. This classification is designed to provide better communications to other clinicians, researchers, and patients.
