Minimal circuit for a flux-controlled Majorana qubit in a quantum spin-Hall insulator
We construct a minimal circuit, based on the top-transmon design, to rotate a
qubit formed out of four Majorana zero-modes at the edge of a two-dimensional
topological insulator. Unlike braiding operations, generic rotations have no
topological protection, but they do allow for a full characterization of the
coherence times of the Majorana qubit. The rotation is controlled by variation
of the flux through a pair of split Josephson junctions in a Cooper pair box,
without any need to adjust gate voltages. The Rabi oscillations of the Majorana
qubit can be monitored via oscillations in the resonance frequency of the
microwave cavity that encloses the Cooper pair box.Comment: Contribution for the proceedings of the Nobel Symposium on

STS-9 BET products
The final products generated for the STS-9, which landed on December 8, 1983 are reported. The trajectory reconstruction utilized an anchor epoch of GMT corresponding to an initial altitude of h 356 kft, selected in view of the limited tracking coverage available. The final state utilized IMU2 measurements and was based on processing radar tracking from six C-bands and a single S-band station, plus six photo-theodolite cameras in the vicinity of Runway 17 at Edwards Air Force Base. The final atmosphere (FLAIR9/UN=581199C) was based on a composite of the remote measured data and the 1978 Air Force Reference Atmosphere model. The Extended BET is available as STS9BET/UN=274885C. The AEROBET and MMLE input files created are discussed. Plots of the more relevant parameters from the AEROBET (reel number NL0624) are included. Input parameters, final residual plots, a trajectory listing, and data archival information are defined
Response of selected plant and insect species to simulated solid rocket exhaust mixtures and to exhaust components from solid rocket fuels
The effects of solid rocket fuel (SRF) exhaust on selected plant and and insect species in the Merritt Island, Florida area was investigated in order to determine if the exhaust clouds generated by shuttle launches would adversely affect the native, plants of the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, the citrus production, or the beekeeping industry of the island. Conditions were simulated in greenhouse exposure chambers and field chambers constructed to model the ideal continuous stirred tank reactor. A plant exposure system was developed for dispensing and monitoring the two major chemicals in SRF exhaust, HCl and Al203, and for dispensing and monitoring SRF exhaust (controlled fuel burns). Plants native to Merritt Island, Florida were grown and used as test species. Dose-response relationships were determined for short term exposure of selected plant species to HCl, Al203, and mixtures of the two to SRF exhaust
Impact of Uncertainties in Hadron Production on Air-Shower Predictions
At high energy, cosmic rays can only be studied by measuring the extensive
air showers they produce in the atmosphere of the Earth. Although the main
features of air showers can be understood within a simple model of successive
interactions, detailed simulations and a realistic description of particle
production are needed to calculate observables relevant to air shower
experiments. Currently hadronic interaction models are the main source of
uncertainty of such simulations. We will study the effect of using different
hadronic models available in CORSIKA and CONEX on extensive air shower

Proton-nucleus cross section at high energies
Cross sections for proton inelastic collision with different nuclei are
described within the Glauber and multiple scattering approximations. A
significant difference between approximate `Glauber' formula and exact
calculations with a geometrical scaling assumption for very high-energy cross
section is shown. Experimental values of proton-proton cross sections obtained
using extensive air shower data are based on the relationship of proton-proton
and respective proton-air absorption cross sections. According to obtained
results values reported by the Akeno and Fly's Eye experimental groups are
about 10% overestimated. The proper energy dependence of absorption cross
section for collisions with air nuclei is of a great importance for studies of
high energy cosmic rays using the Monte Carlo technique.Comment: 9pp (9 eps figures

The STS-11 (41-B) postflight data processing is completed and the results published. The final reconstructed entry trajectory is presented. The various atmospheric sources available for this flight are discussed. Aerodynamic Best Estimate of Trajectory BET generation and plots from this file are presented. A definition of the major maneuvers effected is given. Physical constants, including spacecraft mass properties; final residuals from the reconstruction process; trajectory parameter listings; and an archival section are included
Evidence for Distinct Components of the Galactic Stellar Halo from 838 RR Lyrae Stars Discovered in the LONEOS-I Survey
We present 838 ab-type RR Lyrae stars from the Lowell Observatory Near Earth
Objects Survey Phase I (LONEOS-I). These objects cover 1430 deg^2 and span
distances ranging from 3-30 kpc from the Galactic Center. Object selection is
based on phased, photometric data with 28-50 epochs. We use this large sample
to explore the bulk properties of the stellar halo, including the spatial
distribution. The period-amplitude distribution of this sample shows that the
majority of these RR Lyrae stars resemble Oosterhoff type I, but there is a
significant fraction (26 %) which have longer periods and appear to be
Oosterhoff type II. We find that the radial distributions of these two
populations have significantly different profiles (rho_{OoI} ~ R^(-2.26 +-
0.07) and rho_{OoII} ~ R^(-2.88 +- 0.11). This suggests that the stellar halo
was formed by at least two distinct accretion processes and supports dual-halo

Keeping them honest: Promises reduce cheating in adolescents
People frequently engage in dishonest behavior at a cost to others, and it is therefore beneficial to study interventions promoting honest behavior. We implemented a novel intervention that gave participants a choice to promise to be truthful or not to promise. To measure cheating behavior, we developed a novel variant of the mind game—the dice‐box game—as well as a child‐friendly sender–receiver game. Across three studies with adolescents aged 10 to 14 years (N = 640) from schools in India, we found that promises systematically lowered cheating rates compared with no‐promise control conditions. Adolescents who sent truthful messages in the sender–receiver game cheated less in the dice‐box game and promises reduced cheating in both tasks (Study 1). Promises in the dice‐box game remained effective when negative externalities (Study 2) or incentives for competition (Study 3) were added. A joint analysis of data from all three studies revealed demographic variables that influenced cheating. Our findings confirm that promises have a strong, binding effect on behavior and can be an effective intervention to reduce cheating
Modeling RR Tel through the Evolution of the Spectra
We investigate the evolution of RR Tel after the outburst by fitting the
emission spectra in two epochs. The first one (1978) is characterized by large
fluctuations in the light curve and the second one (1993) by the slow fading
trend. In the frame of a colliding wind model two shocks are present: the
reverse shock propagates in the direction of the white dwarf and the other one
expands towards or beyond the giant. The results of our modeling show that in
1993 the expanding shock has overcome the system and is propagating in the
nearby ISM. The large fluctuations observed in the 1978 light curve result from
line intensity rather than from continuum variation. These variations are
explained by fragmentation of matter at the time of head-on collision of the
winds from the two stars. A high velocity (500 km/s) wind component is revealed
from the fit of the SED of the continuum in the X-ray range in 1978, but is
quite unobservable in the line profiles. The geometrical thickness of the
emitting clumps is the critical parameter which can explain the short time
scale variabilities of the spectrum and the trend of slow line intensity
