On the optical properties of Ag^{+15} ion-beam irradiated TiO_{2} and SnO_{2} thin films
The effects of 200-MeV Ag^{+15} ion irradiation on the optical properties of
TiO_{2} and SnO_{2} thin films prepared by using the RF magnetron sputtering
technique were investigated. These films were characterized by using UV-vis
spectroscopy, and with increasing irradiation fluence, the transmittance for
the TiO_{2} films was observed to increase systematically while that for
SnO_{2} was observed to decrease. Absorption spectra of the irradiated samples
showed minor changes in the indirect bandgap from 3.44 to 3.59 eV with
increasing irradiation fluence for TiO_{2} while significant changes in the
direct bandgap from 3.92 to 3.6 eV were observed for SnO_{2}. The observed
modifications in the optical properties of both the TiO_{2} and the SnO_{2}
systems with irradiation can be attributed to controlled structural

Promoting Recovery from Mental Illness: Consumer, Staff, and Program Level Interventions
poster abstractThe ACT Center of Indiana is a research and training center devoted to helping promote recovery from severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We focus on interventions that are based on the best research evidence, and we emphasize ways to translate research into actual practice. We have current research projects that target different levels of the mental health service system. Here we present research focused on 1) the consumer with mental illness - identifying ways that consumers set treatment goals related to recovery; 2) the staff who work with people with severe mental illness – helping staff stay healthy and engaged in their work; and 3) the programs that support recovery – identifying cost-effective ways to ensure high quality services
The Cohen-Macaulay property of separating invariants of finite groups
In the case of finite groups, a separating algebra is a subalgebra of the
ring of invariants which separates the orbits. Although separating algebras are
often better behaved than the ring of invariants, we show that many of the
criteria which imply that the ring of invariants is non Cohen-Macaulay actually
imply that no graded separating algebra is Cohen-Macaulay. For example, we show
that, over a field of positive characteristic p, given sufficiently many copies
of a faithful modular representation, no graded separating algebra is
Cohen-Macaulay. Furthermore, we show that, for a p-group, the existence of a
Cohen-Macaulay graded separating algebra implies the group is generated by
bireflections. Furthermore, we show that, for a -group, the existence of a
Cohen-Macaulay graded separating algebra implies the group is generated by
bireflections. Additionally, we give an example which shows that Cohen-Macaulay
separating algebras can occur when the ring of invariants is not

Power management and control strategies for off-grid hybrid power systems with renewable energies and storage

The final publication is available at Springer via https://doi.org/10.1007/s12667-017-0251-y.This paper presents a simulation study of standalone hybrid Distributed Generation Systems (DGS) with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The DGS consists of Photovoltaic (PV) panels as Renewable Power Source (RPS), a Diesel Generator (DG) for power buck-up and a BESS to accommodate the surplus of energy, which may be employed in times of poor PV generation. While off-grid DGS represent an efficient and cost-effective energy supply solution particularly to rural and remote areas, fluctuations in voltage and frequency due to load variations, weather conditions (temperature, irradiation) and transmission line short-circuits are major challenges. The paper suggests a hierarchical Power Management (PM) and controller structure to improve the reliability and efficiency of the hybrid DGS. The first layer of the overall control scheme includes a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) to adjust the voltage and frequency at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) and a Clamping Bridge Circuit (CBC) which regulates the DC bus voltage. A maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller based on FLC is designed to extract the optimum power from the PV. The second control layer coordinates among PV, DG and BESS to ensure reliable and efficient power supply to the load. MATLAB Simulink is used to implement the overall model of the off-grid DGS and to test the performance of the proposed control scheme which is evaluated in a series of simulations scenarios. The results demonstrated the good performance of the proposed control scheme and effective coordination between the DGS for all the simulation scenarios considered.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

Reproductive health and lifestyle factors associated with health-related quality of life among perinatally HIV-infected adolescents in Uganda
Background
With increased survival of perinatally HIV - infected adolescents due to antiretroviral therapy (ART), the focus of HIV care has shifted to health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as a measure of disease progression, effects of ART co-morbidity and prognosis. We assessed factors associated with better HRQoL in perinatally HIV -infected adolescents in Uganda by determining the associations between sexual and reproductive health (SRH) or lifestyle experiences on HRQoL.
Methods
In a cross-sectional study, data on SRH, lifestyle experiences, socio demographic factors, communication with parents on sexuality and satisfaction of SRH services in ART clinics were collected from 614 HIV perinatally infected adolescents aged 10–19 using an interviewer-administered survey questionnaire. HRQoL data were collected using the Medical Outcomes Study HIV Health Survey instrument (MOS-HIV). Factors associated with better HRQoL were analysed using multiple logistic regression.
Results
The mean age was 16.2 ± 2.1 years, 362 (58.8 %) were females and 210 (34.2 %) were sexually active. Adolescents on ART were twice likely to present with better physical health (AOR = 2.07, 95 % CI: 1.24–3.46) and four times more likely to present with better mental health (AOR = 3.9, 95 % CI: 2.22–6.92) than those who were not on ART. There were no statistically significant associations between SRH (ever had sex, ever been pregnant, condom use, contraceptive use) or life style factors and physical health or mental health. Those with secondary or tertiary education were more likely to present with a better mental health (AOR = 5.3, 95 % CI: 1.86–15.41) compared those who had attained primary or no education. Participants who desired to have a child in future more likely (AOR 1.7, 95 % CI: 1.05–3.00) to present with a better mental health. Lack of communication with guardians on sexuality (AOR = 0.6, 95 % CI: 0.40–0.89), or dissatisfaction with SRH services (AOR 0.34, 95 % CI: 0.18–0.62) were associated with poorer mental health.
Conclusion
Among perinatally HIV-infected adolescents in Uganda, being on ART was associated with better physical and mental health while lack of communication with guardians on sexuality or dissatisfaction with SRH services was associated with poor mental health. Adolescents with pregnancy intentions were more likely to have a better mental health
Natural Form of Noncytolytic Flexible Human Fc as a Long-Acting Carrier of Agonistic Ligand, Erythropoietin
Human IgG1 Fc has been widely used as a bioconjugate, but exhibits shortcomings, such as antibody- and complement-mediated cytotoxicity as well as decreased bioactivity, when applied to agonistic proteins. Here, we constructed a nonimmunogenic, noncytolytic and flexible hybrid Fc (hyFc) consisting of IgD and IgG4, and tested its function using erythropoietin (EPO) conjugate, EPO-hyFc. Despite low amino acid homology (20.5%) between IgD Fc and IgG4 Fc, EPO-hyFc retained “Y-shaped” structure and repeated intravenous administrations of EPO-hyFc into monkeys did not generate EPO-hyFc-specific antibody responses. Furthermore, EPO-hyFc could not bind to FcγR I and C1q in contrast to EPO-IgG1 Fc. In addition, EPO-hyFc exhibited better in vitro bioactivity and in vivo bioactivity in rats than EPO-IgG1 Fc, presumably due to the high flexibility of IgD. Moreover, the mean serum half-life of EPO-hyFc(H), a high sialic acid content form of EPO-hyFc, was approximately 2-fold longer than that of the heavily glycosylated EPO, darbepoetin alfa, in rats. More importantly, subcutaneous injection of EPO-hyFc(H) not only induced a significantly greater elevation of serum hemoglobin levels than darbepoetin alfa in both normal rats and cisplatin-induced anemic rats, but also displayed a delayed time to maximal serum level and twice final area-under-the-curve (AUClast). Taken together, hyFc might be a more attractive Fc conjugate for agonistic proteins/peptides than IgG1 Fc due to its capability to elongate their half-lives without inducing host effector functions and hindering bioactivity of fused molecules. Additionally, a head-to-head comparison demonstrated that hyFc-fusion strategy more effectively improved the in vivo bioactivity of EPO than the hyperglycosylation approach
