Quantum Control of Qubits and Atomic Motion Using Ultrafast Laser Pulses
Pulsed lasers offer significant advantages over CW lasers in the coherent
control of qubits. Here we review the theoretical and experimental aspects of
controlling the internal and external states of individual trapped atoms with
pulse trains. Two distinct regimes of laser intensity are identified. When the
pulses are sufficiently weak that the Rabi frequency is much smaller
than the trap frequency \otrap, sideband transitions can be addressed and
atom-atom entanglement can be accomplished in much the same way as with CW
lasers. By contrast, if the pulses are very strong (\Omega \gg \otrap),
impulsive spin-dependent kicks can be combined to create entangling gates which
are much faster than a trap period. These fast entangling gates should work
outside of the Lamb-Dicke regime and be insensitive to thermal atomic motion.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figure
Investigation of fast initialization of spacecraft bubble memory systems
Bubble domain technology offers significant improvement in reliability and functionality for spacecraft onboard memory applications. In considering potential memory systems organizations, minimization of power in high capacity bubble memory systems necessitates the activation of only the desired portions of the memory. In power strobing arbitrary memory segments, a capability of fast turn on is required. Bubble device architectures, which provide redundant loop coding in the bubble devices, limit the initialization speed. Alternate initialization techniques are investigated to overcome this design limitation. An initialization technique using a small amount of external storage is demonstrated
Completeness and Incompleteness of Synchronous Kleene Algebra
Synchronous Kleene algebra (SKA), an extension of Kleene algebra (KA), was
proposed by Prisacariu as a tool for reasoning about programs that may execute
synchronously, i.e., in lock-step. We provide a countermodel witnessing that
the axioms of SKA are incomplete w.r.t. its language semantics, by exploiting a
lack of interaction between the synchronous product operator and the Kleene
star. We then propose an alternative set of axioms for SKA, based on Salomaa's
axiomatisation of regular languages, and show that these provide a sound and
complete characterisation w.r.t. the original language semantics.Comment: Accepted at MPC 201
Circulating tumour cells: insights into tumour heterogeneity
Tumour heterogeneity is a major barrier to cure breast cancer. It can exist between patients with different intrinsic subtypes of breast cancer or within an individual patient with breast cancer. In the latter case, heterogeneity has been observed between different metastatic sites, between metastatic sites and the original primary tumour, and even within a single tumour at either a metastatic or a primary site. Tumour heterogeneity is a function of two separate, although linked, processes. First, genetic instability is a hallmark of malignancy, and results in ‘fixed’ genetic changes that are almost certainly carried forward through progression of the cancer over time, with increasingly complex additional genetic changes in new metastases as they arise. The second type of heterogeneity is due to differential but ‘plastic’ expression of various genes important in the biology and response to various therapies. Together, these processes result in highly variable cancers with differential response, and resistance, to both targeted (e.g. endocrine or anti‐human epithelial growth receptor type 2 ( HER 2) agents) and nontargeted therapies (e.g. chemotherapy). Ideally, tumour heterogeneity would be monitored over time, especially in relation to therapeutic strategies. However, biopsies of metastases require invasive and costly procedures, and biopsies of multiple metastases, or serially over time, are impractical. Circulating tumour cells ( CTC s) represent a potential surrogate for tissue‐based cancer and therefore might provide the opportunity to monitor serial changes in tumour biology. Recent advances have enabled accurate and reliable quantification and molecular characterization of CTC s with regard to a number of important biomarkers including oestrogen receptor alpha and HER 2. Preliminary data have demonstrated that expression of these markers between CTC s in individual patients with metastatic breast cancer reflects the heterogeneity of the underlying tumours. Future studies are designed to determine the clinical utility of these novel technologies in either research or routine clinical settings.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/99056/1/joim12047.pd
Entanglement of Atomic Qubits using an Optical Frequency Comb
We demonstrate the use of an optical frequency comb to coherently control and
entangle atomic qubits. A train of off-resonant ultrafast laser pulses is used
to efficiently and coherently transfer population between electronic and
vibrational states of trapped atomic ions and implement an entangling quantum
logic gate with high fidelity. This technique can be extended to the high field
regime where operations can be performed faster than the trap frequency. This
general approach can be applied to more complex quantum systems, such as large
collections of interacting atoms or molecules.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
A heralded quantum gate between remote quantum memories
We demonstrate a probabilistic entangling quantum gate between two distant
trapped ytterbium ions. The gate is implemented between the hyperfine "clock"
state atomic qubits and mediated by the interference of two emitted photons
carrying frequency encoded qubits. Heralded by the coincidence detection of
these two photons, the gate has an average fidelity of 90+-2%. This entangling
gate together with single qubit operations is sufficient to generate large
entangled cluster states for scalable quantum computing
