Comparing league formats with respect to match importance in Belgian football

Recently, most clubs in the highest Belgian football division have become convinced that the format of their league should be changed. Moreover, the TV station that broadcasts the league is pleading for a more attractive competition. However, the clubs have not been able to agree on a new league format, mainly because they have conflicting interests. In this paper, we compare the current league format, and three other formats that have been considered by the Royal Belgian Football Association. We simulate the course of each of these league formats, based on historical match results. We assume that the attractiveness of a format is determined by the importance of its games; our importance measure for a game is based on the number of teams for which this game can be decisive to reach a given goal. Furthermore, we provide an overview of how each league format aligns with the expectations and interests of each type of club

Application of the method of Healy and Pan for estimating centile lines

Summary. — Healy et al. (1988) proposed a distribution-free method for estimating smooth centile lines, which was recently modified by Pan et al. (1990). The technique involves two steps : (1) estimation of centiles on the raw data, and (2) fitting a non-parametric model to obtain smooth centile curves. On the basis of examples, we have examined the applicability of the method when omitting step 1 of the procedure, but starting from step 2, using tabulated centile values calculated in the classical way. We have also examined to what extent the estimation of centile curves can be improved by fitting a structural model to the P50 values first. The results have shown that the various approaches give satisfactory results, providing smooth centile lines well within the standard error of the raw centiles. The difficulties in choosing the appropriate structure of the model to be fitted are discussed. A Fortran-routine, to be used in numerical least-squares solutions of the problem, is provided in Appendix.APPLICATION DE LA MÉTHODE DE HEALY ET DE PAN POUR ESTIMER DES COURBES PERCENTILÉES Résumé. — Healy et al. (1988) ont proposé une méthode indépendante de la distribution pour estimer les courbes lissées de percentiles qui fut récemment modifiées par Pan et al. ( 1990). La technique implique deux étapes : ( 1) estimation des centiles sur des données brutes et (2) ajustement à un modèle non-paramétrique pour obtenir des courbes lissées de percentiles. En nous basant sur des exemples, nous avons examiné l'applicabilité de la méthode quand, sautant l'étape 1 de la procédure, on débute à partir de l'étape 2, en utilisant des valeurs classifiées de percentiles calculées selon la méthode classique. Nous avons aussi examiné dans quelle mesure l'estimation des courbes de percentiles peut être améliorée en ajustant, en premier lieu, un modèle structurel aux valeurs P50. Les résultats ont montré que les différentes approches donnent des résultats satisfaisants, procurant des courbes lissées de percentiles bien dans les limites de l 'erreur standard des percentiles bruts. Les difficultés dans le choix de la structure appropriée du modèle qui doit être ajusté sont discutées.
