    Conjugation spaces and edges of compatible torus actions

    Duistermaat introduced the concept of ``real locus'' of a Hamiltonian manifold. In that and in others' subsequent works, it has been shown that many of the techniques developed in the symplectic category can be used to study real loci, so long as the coefficient ring is restricted to the integers modulo 2. It turns out that these results seem not necessarily to depend on the ambient symplectic structure, but rather to be topological in nature. This observation prompts the definition of ``conjugation space'' in a paper of the two authors with V. Puppe. Our main theorem in this paper gives a simple criterion for recognizing when a topological space is a conjugation space.Comment: 19 page

    Zusammenfassung: Periostreaktionen an langen Röhrenknochen im Kindesalter gehören zu den röntgenologischen Befunden, die für das "battered child syndrome" charakteristisch sind. Es wird über einen 2Monate alten Säugling berichtet, der mit einem Hämatom am rechten Oberschenkel in ein Kinderspital gebracht worden war. Wegen einer radiologisch nachgewiesenen Periostabhebung am rechten Oberschenkel und einem angegebenen häuslichen Trauma war zunächst der Verdacht auf eine Kindesmisshandlung geäußert worden. Die anschließende umfassende radiologische Diagnostik zeigte dann jedoch gleichartige Auffälligkeiten auch am linken Ober- und Unterschenkel. Nachdem derartige Veränderungen gelegentlich im Rahmen des Skelettwachstums im Kindesalter beobachtet werden, muss eine solche physiologische Entstehungsmöglichkeit gerade bei multifokalem Auftreten grundsätzlich in die differenzialdiagnostischen Überlegungen bei der Abklärung einer fraglichen Kindesmisshandlung einbezogen werde

    Sex differences and menstrual cycle effects in cognitive and sensory resting state networks

    It has not yet been established if resting state (RS) connectivity reflects stable characteristics of the brain, or if it is modulated by the psychological and/or physiological state of the participant. Based on research demonstrating sex hormonal effects in task-related brain activity, the present study aimed to investigate corresponding differences in RS networks. RS functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (RS fMRI) was conducted in women during three different menstrual cycle phases, while men underwent three repeated RS fMRI testing sessions. Independent component analysis was used to identify the default mode network (DMN) and an auditory RS network. For the DMN, RS connectivity was stable across testing sessions in men, but varied across the menstrual cycle in women. For the auditory network (AN), retest reliable sex difference was found. Although RS activity in the DMN has been interpreted as trait characteristic of functional brain organization, these findings suggest that RS activity in networks involving frontal areas might be less stable than in sensory-based networks and can dynamically fluctuate. This also implies that some of the previously reported effects of sex hormones on task-related activity might to some extent be mediated by cycle-related fluctuations in RS activity, especially when frontal areas are involve

    We consider the behavior of an Ising ferromagnet obeying the Glauber dynamics under the influence of a fast switching, random external field. In Part I, we introduced a general formalism for describing such systems and presented the mean field theory. In this article we derive results for the one dimensional case, which can be only partially solved. Monte Carlo simulations performed on a square lattice indicate that the main features of the mean field theory survive the presence of strong fluctuations.Comment: 10 pages in REVTeX/LaTeX format, 17 eps/ps figures.     We consider the behavior of an Ising ferromagnet obeying the Glauber dynamics under the influence of a fast switching, random external field. After introducing a general formalism for describing such systems, we consider here the mean-field theory. A novel type of first order phase transition related to spontaneous symmetry breaking and dynamic freezing is found. The non-equilibrium stationary state has a complex structure, which changes as a function of parameters from a singular-continuous distribution with Euclidean or fractal support to an absolutely continuous one.Comment: 12 pages REVTeX/LaTeX format, 12 eps/ps figures.     Role of host feeding niches and host refuges in habitat-related behaviour of Hyssopus pallidus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), a larval parasitoid of the codling moth

    Parasitoid fitness depends largely on the capability to locate a host in an ecosystem. A parasitoid of a polyphagous host might not be able to find or to access the host in all its feeding niches. This study evaluated the niche selection of Hyssopus pallidus (Askew), a larval parasitoid of Cydia pomonella (Linnaeus), at the plant level with the goal of assessing its potential for biological control on different fruit crops throughout the plant cycle. Parasitoid behaviour during host location and reproduction rate were investigated on host caterpillars actively feeding on apple, pear, apricot or plum, and on caterpillars diapausing under the bark. Under laboratory conditions, the host searching behaviour of H. pallidus varied depending on the fruit species offered and the infestation of the fruits. Parasitoid females searched longer on apples than on other fruit species, and they searched longer on infested than on uninfested apples. Female wasps were able to locate and parasitize host caterpillars under the tree bark, and their behaviour did not vary with host accessibility. The numbers of caterpillars attacked by H. pallidus depended on the fruit species. The highest numbers of caterpillars were parasitized in apples and apricots. Their accessibility (i.e. position) within the fruit or on the branch did not influence parasitism success. Although hosts were parasitized throughout the season, the best results were achieved with early and late releases. Therefore, the host niche selection behaviour of H. pallidus most likely co-evolved with the host C. pomonella on apples, which renders H. pallidus a valuable biocontrol agent for successful release at different times of the season into apple orchard
