Evolutionary games in the multiverse
Evolutionary game dynamics of two players with two strategies has been
studied in great detail. These games have been used to model many biologically
relevant scenarios, ranging from social dilemmas in mammals to microbial
diversity. Some of these games may in fact take place between a number of
individuals and not just between two. Here, we address one-shot games with
multiple players. As long as we have only two strategies, many results from two
player games can be generalized to multiple players. For games with multiple
players and more than two strategies, we show that statements derived for
pairwise interactions do no longer hold. For two player games with any number
of strategies there can be at most one isolated internal equilibrium. For any
number of players with any number of strategies n, there can
be at most (d-1)^(n-1) isolated internal equilibria. Multiplayer games show a
great dynamical complexity that cannot be captured based on pairwise
interactions. Our results hold for any game and can easily be applied for
specific cases, e.g. public goods games or multiplayer stag hunts
Extrapolating weak selection in evolutionary games
In evolutionary games, reproductive success is determined by payoffs. Weak selection means that even large differences in game outcomes translate into small fitness differences. Many results have been derived using weak selection approximations, in which perturbation analysis facilitates the derivation of analytical results. Here, we ask whether results derived under weak selection are also qualitatively valid for intermediate and strong selection. By ‘‘qualitatively valid’’ we mean that the ranking of strategies induced by an evolutionary process does not change when the intensity of selection increases. For two-strategy games, we show that the ranking obtained under weak selection cannot be carried over to higher selection intensity if the number of players exceeds two. For games with three (or more) strategies, previous examples for multiplayer games have shown that the ranking of strategies can change with the intensity of selection. In particular, rank changes imply that the most abundant strategy at one intensity of selection can become the least abundant for another. We show that this applies already to pairwise interactions for a broad class of evolutionary processes. Even when both weak and strong selection limits lead to consistent predictions, rank changes can occur for intermediate intensities of selection. To analyze how common such games are, we show numerically that for randomly drawn two-player games with three or more strategies, rank changes frequently occur and their likelihood increases rapidly with the number of strategies n. In particular, rank changes are almost certain for n§8, which jeopardizes the predictive power of results derived for weak selection
Laser Repair of Superalloy Single Crystals with Varying Substrate Orientations
The casting and repair of single-crystal gas turbine blades require specific solidification conditions that prevent the formation of new grains, equiaxed or columnar, ahead of the epitaxial columnar dendrites. These conditions are best determined by microstructure modeling. Present day analytical models of the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) relate the microstructure to local solidification conditions (temperature gradient and interface velocity) without taking into account the effects of (1) a preferred growth direction of the columnar dendrites and (2) a growth competition between columnar grains of different orientations. In this article, the infiuence of these effects on the grain structure of nickel-base superalloy single crystals, which have been resolidified after laser treatment or directionally cast, is determined by experiment and by analytical and numerical modeling. It is shown that two effects arise for the case of a nonzero angle between the local heat flux direction and the preferred dendrite growth axis: (1) the regime of equiaxed growth is extended and (2) a loss of the crystal orientation of the substrate often occurs by growth competition of columnar grains leading to an "oriented-to-misoriented transition” (OMT). The results are essential for the definition of the single-crystal processing window and are important for the service life extension of expensive components in land-based or aircraft gas turbine
Carrier relaxation in GaAs v-groove quantum wires and the effects of localization
Carrier relaxation processes have been investigated in GaAs/AlGaAs v-groove
quantum wires (QWRs) with a large subband separation (46 meV). Signatures of
inhibited carrier relaxation mechanisms are seen in temperature-dependent
photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence-excitation (PLE) measurements; we
observe strong emission from the first excited state of the QWR below ~50 K.
This is attributed to reduced inter-subband relaxation via phonon scattering
between localized states. Theoretical calculations and experimental results
indicate that the pinch-off regions, which provide additional two-dimensional
confinement for the QWR structure, have a blocking effect on relaxation
mechanisms for certain structures within the v-groove. Time-resolved PL
measurements show that efficient carrier relaxation from excited QWR states
into the ground state, occurs only at temperatures > 30 K. Values for the low
temperature radiative lifetimes of the ground- and first excited-state excitons
have been obtained (340 ps and 160 ps respectively), and their corresponding

The international standardisation arena and the civil society participation stakes : results of the INTERTERM project
International standards are playing an increasingly important role in market governance while frequently exerting direct effects on health, safety and the environment. Yet civil society, more often than not, is absent from the standardisation procedures. The recommendation made here is to foster the participation of civil society actors in standardisation by framing standardisation topics in a way that will encourage the mobilisation of these actors in accordance with their repertoire of actions and interests and by organising the plural expertise required for the effective participation that is necessary if they are to exert an influence
The Emergence of Altruistic Punishment: Via Freedom to Enforcement
In human societies, cooperative behaviour in public goods interactions is usually enforced through institutions that impose sanctions on free-riders. Many experiments on public goods games have shown that in the absence of such institutions, individuals are often willing to punish defectors, even at a cost to themselves, effectively taking the law into their own hands. Theoretical models confirm that social norms prescribing the punishment of deviant behaviour are stable: once established, they prevent invasion by dissident minorities. But how can such costly punishing behaviour gain a foothold in the population? A surprisingly simple model shows that if individuals have the option to stand aside and abstain from the public goods interaction, this paves the way for the emergence and establishment of cooperative behaviour based on the punishment of defectors. Thus the freedom to withdraw from the public enterprise leads to a self-enforcing prosocial norm. Paradoxically, the option of individual autarky may be an important step for the emergence of institutions punishing the non-cooperation of their members. Conversely, public goods interactions which are obligatory rather than voluntary are unlikely to gain a foothold in the population
Stochastic differential equations for evolutionary dynamics with demographic noise and mutations
We present a general framework to describe the evolutionary dynamics of an
arbitrary number of types in finite populations based on stochastic
differential equations (SDE). For large, but finite populations this allows to
include demographic noise without requiring explicit simulations. Instead, the
population size only rescales the amplitude of the noise. Moreover, this
framework admits the inclusion of mutations between different types, provided
that mutation rates, , are not too small compared to the inverse
population size 1/N. This ensures that all types are almost always represented
in the population and that the occasional extinction of one type does not
result in an extended absence of that type. For this limits the use
of SDE's, but in this case there are well established alternative
approximations based on time scale separation. We illustrate our approach by a
Rock-Scissors-Paper game with mutations, where we demonstrate excellent
agreement with simulation based results for sufficiently large populations. In
the absence of mutations the excellent agreement extends to small population

The implant material, Ti6Al7Nb: surface microstructure, composition and properties
The excellent biocompatibility of titanium and its alloys is intimately related with the properties of the surface in contact with the biological environment, and therefore it is closely connected with the stable, passivating oxide layer that forms on its surface. In the present paper, the oxide layer on the alloy Ti6Al7Nb has been characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning Auger microscopy and pH-dependent lateral force microscopy. The alloying elements Al and Nb are incorporated in the oxide layer and detected in their most stable oxidized form, as Al2O3 and Nb2O5. Their distribution in the oxide reflects the underlying α-β microstructure, with enrichment of Al in the α- and of Nb in the β-phase (determined by electron microprobe). Friction measurements (lateral force microscopy) indicate slightly different, pH-dependent, lateral forces above the α- and β-phase structures that point to small local variations in surface charges. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publisher
If cooperation is likely punish mildly: Insights from economic experiments based on the snowdrift game
Punishment may deter antisocial behavior. Yet to punish is costly, and the
costs often do not offset the gains that are due to elevated levels of
cooperation. However, the effectiveness of punishment depends not only on how
costly it is, but also on the circumstances defining the social dilemma. Using
the snowdrift game as the basis, we have conducted a series of economic
experiments to determine whether severe punishment is more effective than mild
punishment. We have observed that severe punishment is not necessarily more
effective, even if the cost of punishment is identical in both cases. The
benefits of severe punishment become evident only under extremely adverse
conditions, when to cooperate is highly improbable in the absence of sanctions.
If cooperation is likely, mild punishment is not less effective and leads to
higher average payoffs, and is thus the much preferred alternative. Presented
results suggest that the positive effects of punishment stem not only from
imposed fines, but may also have a psychological background. Small fines can do
wonders in motivating us to chose cooperation over defection, but without the
paralyzing effect that may be brought about by large fines. The later should be
