    Effects of hydropeaking on drift, stranding and community composition of macroinvertebrates : a field experimental approach in three regulated Swiss rivers

    Hydropeaking operation leads to fluctuations in wetted area between base and peak flow and increases discharge-related hydraulic forces (e.g. flow velocity). These processes promote macroinvertebrate drift and stranding, often affecting benthic abundance and biomass. Our field experimental study—conducted in three hydropeakingregulated Swiss rivers—aimed to quantify (a) the short-term effects of the combined increase in flow amplitude and up-ramping rate based on macroinvertebrate drift and stranding, as well as (b) long-term effects based on the established community composition. Hydropeaking led to increased macroinvertebrate drift compared to base flow and to unaffected residual flow reaches. Moreover, stranding of macroinvertebrates was positively related to drift, especially during the up-ramping phase. Flow velocity and up-ramping rate were identified as major determinants for macroinvertebrate drift, while flow ratio and down-ramping rate for stranding. Particularly high sensitivity towards hydropeaking was found for Limnephilidae, whereas Heptageniidae seemed to be resistant in respect to short- and long-term hydropeaking effects. In the longterm, hydropeaking did not considerably reduce benthic density of most taxa, especially of some highly resistant and resilient taxa such as Chironomidae and Baetidae, which dominated the community composition even though they showed comparably high drift and stranding responses. Therefore, we argue that high drift and/or stranding, especially of individual-rich taxa, does not necessarily indicate strong hydropeaking sensitivity. Finally, our results demonstrate the necessity to consider the differences in river-specific morphological complexity and hydropeaking intensity, since these factors strongly influence the community composition and short-term drift and stranding response of macroinvertebrates to hydropower pressure

    The Vjosa River corridor: a model of natural hydro-morphodynamics and a hotspot of highly threatened ecosystems of European significance

    Context: Large near-natural rivers have become rare in Europe, a fact reflected in the high conservation status of many riverine ecosystems. While the Balkan still harbors several intact river corridors, most of these are under pressure from planned hydropower constructions. Unfortunately, there is little information available on the hydromorphodynamics and biota of Balkan rivers under threat. Objectives: We present a synthesis of research on the Vjosa in Southern Albania. Here, longitudinal continuity in water flow, undisturbed sediment transport and intact fluvial dynamics are still maintained, but threatened by two large dams planned in its downstream section. We intend to provide a first multidisciplinary inventory of this river system as an example of the knowledge base required for sound water management decisions in the Balkans. Methods: Based on field work of a multidisciplinary consortium of scientists from Albania and other countries conducted from 2017 onwards, we summarize the most important findings on geomorphology of the riverine landscape, habitat turnover rates, vegetation ecology and selected animal taxa. Results: We found evidence that significant areas (86%) of the river corridor are covered by habitats listed in Annex 1 of the European Union Habitats Directive. These are associated with a high number of threatened biota. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the value of the Vjosa as one of the few remaining reference sites for dynamic floodplains in Europe and as a natural laboratory for interdisciplinary research. We emphasize that such multidisciplinary studies are a prerequisite for informed evaluation of potential impacts caused by hydropower plants

New network management approaches and innovative equipment are needed to handle highly volatile voltage profiles resulting from intermittent distributed generation. This paper investigates the use of an inline voltage regulator in a LV network. As simulations based on realistic feed-in scenarios show, it is an efficient tool for influencing a network's voltage profile. Since voltage regulation is not required permanently, such a flexible power electronic device can be further used to increase a power system's efficiency and reliability by implementing features such as reactive power compensation or mitigation of harmonics.     Controlled Reservoir Drawdown—Challenges for Sediment Management and Integrative Monitoring: An Austrian Case Study—Part B: Local Scale

    The present case study deals with a controlled drawdown beyond the operational level of the Gepatsch reservoir (Austria). Based on the awareness of potential ecological consequences, an advanced set of measures was conducted and an integrative monitoring design was implemented. This pre- and post-event monitoring included measurements regarding the cross sectional variability and habitat-related turbidity, freeze-core sampling to obtain knowledge on fine sediment infiltration and an evaluation of the macroinvertebrate communities as well as fish egg development (salmonid incubation). The results of the sedimentological as well as biological investigations show a negligible impact on the downstream located aquatic system due to the controlled drawdown of the Gepatsch reservoir. In addition, recommendations based on the findings from this study regarding possible methods for local scale monitoring can be given

    MEDB-14. Clinical outcome of pediatric medulloblastoma patients with Li-Fraumeni syndrome

    PURPOSE: The prognosis for SHH-medulloblastoma (MB) patients with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is poor. Due to lack of comprehensive data for these patients, it is challenging to establish effective therapeutic recommendations. We here describe the largest retrospective cohort of pediatric LFS SHH-MB patients to date and their clinical outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: N=31 patients with LFS SHH-MB were included in this retrospective multicenter study. TP53 variant type, clinical parameters including treatment modalities, event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS), as well as recurrence patterns and incidence of secondary neoplasms, were evaluated. RESULTS: All LFS-MBs were classified as SHH subgroup, in 30/31 cases based on DNA methylation analysis. The majority of constitutional TP53 variants (72%) represented missense variants, and all except two truncating variants were located within the DNA-binding domain. 54% were large cell anaplastic, 69% gross totally resected and 81% had M0 status. The 2-(y)ear and 5-(y)ear EFS were 26% and 8,8%, respectively, and 2y- and 5y-OS 40% and 12%. Patients who received post-operative radiotherapy (RT) followed by chemotherapy (CT) showed significantly better outcomes (2y-EFS:43%) compared to patients who received CT before RT (30%) (p<0.05). The 2y-EFS and 2y-OS were similar when treated with protocols including high-dose chemotherapy (EFS:22%, OS:44%) compared to patients treated with maintenance-type chemotherapy (EFS:31%, OS:45%). Recurrence occurred in 73.3% of cases independent of resection or M-status, typically within the radiation field (75% of RT-treated patients). Secondary malignancies developed in 12.5% and were cause of death in all affected patients. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with LFS-MBs have a dismal prognosis. This retrospective study suggests that upfront RT may increase EFS, while intensive therapeutic approaches including high-dose chemotherapy did not translate into increased survival of this patient group. To improve outcomes of LFS-MB patients, prospective collection of clinical data and development of treatment guidelines are required

    BACKGROUND The prognosis for Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) patients with medulloblastoma (MB) is poor. Comprehensive clinical data for this patient group is lacking, challenging the development of novel therapeutic strategies. Here, we present clinical and molecular data on a retrospective cohort of pediatric LFS MB patients. METHODS In this multinational, multicenter retrospective cohort study, LFS patients under 21 years with MB and class 5 or class 4 constitutional TP53 variants were included. TP53 mutation status, methylation subgroup, treatment, progression free- (PFS) and overall survival (OS), recurrence patterns, and incidence of subsequent neoplasms were evaluated. RESULTS The study evaluated 47 LFS individuals diagnosed with MB, mainly classified as DNA methylation subgroup "SHH_3" (86%). The majority (74%) of constitutional TP53 variants represented missense variants. The 2- and 5-year (y-) PFS were 36% and 20%, and 2- and 5y-OS were 53% and 23%, respectively. Patients who received post-operative radiotherapy (RT) (2y-PFS: 44%, 2y-OS: 60%) or chemotherapy before RT (2y-PFS: 32%, 2y-OS: 48%) had significantly better clinical outcome then patients who were not treated with RT (2y-PFS: 0%, 2y-OS: 25%). Patients treated according to protocols including high-intensity chemotherapy and patients who received only maintenance-type chemotherapy showed similar outcomes (2y-PFS: 42% and 35%, 2y-OS: 68% and 53%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS LFS MB patients have a dismal prognosis. In the presented cohort use of RT significantly increased survival rates, whereas chemotherapy intensity did not influence their clinical outcome. Prospective collection of clinical data and development of novel treatments are required to improve the outcome of LFS MB patients
