    The stability of the ways of coping (revised) questionnaire over time in parents of children with Downs-Syndrome:a research note

    The stability of the Ways of Coping (Revised) Questionnaire over time was assessed by comparing the scores of 68 mothers and 53 fathers of school-aged children with Down's syndrome over a 3-year time interval on the five coping strategy subscales described by Knussen et al. (1992). For this analysis, mothers' and fathers' scores were analysed separately. It was shown by t tests that mothers' and fathers' scores on the coping strategy subscales had not significantly changed over the three-year period. Time 1 and Time 2 scores on all of the coping subscales were strongly positively associated, with the exception of fathers' scores on the Stoicism subscale. Test-retest reliability was adequate for all subscales except mothers' scores on the Passive Acceptance subscale and fathers' scores on the Stoicism subscale. These results, by demonstrating the stability of the Ways of Coping (Revised) Questionnaire over a 3-year time period, further illustrate the utility of this instrument for investigating coping in families with special problems

    PERFORMANCE OF THE GROUT CURTAIN AT THE KENTUCKY RIVER LOCK AND DAM NO. 8

    Karst bedrock conditions and deterioration of the lock and dam structures have resulted in significant leakage through, underneath, and around Lock and Dam No. 8 on the Kentucky River. During severe droughts, the water surface in Pool No. 8 has been observed to drop below the crest of the dam, resulting in water supply shortages and water quality issues for surrounding communities reliant on the pool. Presently, the primary purpose of Lock and Dam No. 8 is water supply. Pool No. 8 is currently where the cities of Nicholasville (Jessamine County, KY) and Lancaster (Garrard County, KY) draw their water. Due to the age and condition of the structures, and the criticality of the retained water supply, the project Owner commissioned a replacement dam to be built. One major component of the replacement dam was a foundation improvement program. The foundation improvement program was designed to address the karst bedrock conditions at the site. The foundation improvements included a secant pile cutoff wall and a double-row grout curtain. The grout curtain at Lock and Dam No. 8 was evaluated based on the metrics presently available

    Life after Harry: creating a reader\u27s advisory model based on the literary archetypes of J.K. Rowling\u27s Harry Potter series

    The purpose of this study was to develop and test a method of Reader\u27s Advisory based on archetypal character analysis in place of genre, author, or mood advisory. The study used J. K. Rowling\u27s popular Harry Potter fiction series as a base for developing this strategy. After identifying four character archetypes in the Harry Potter series, the researcher consulted Bowker\u27s Fiction Connection database to find other award winning young adult fiction that contained at least two of the archetypes identified in the Harry Potter series. Upon identifying ten novels that fit the criteria, the researcher read and analyzed each of the novels to see if they did, indeed, contain archetypes similar to ones found in the Rowling series. Of the ten young adult novels, eight were found to meet the established criteria

    First phylogenetic analyses of galaxy evolution

    The Hubble tuning fork diagram, based on morphology, has always been the preferred scheme for classification of galaxies and is still the only one originally built from historical/evolutionary relationships. At the opposite, biologists have long taken into account the parenthood links of living entities for classification purposes. Assuming branching evolution of galaxies as a "descent with modification", we show that the concepts and tools of phylogenetic systematics widely used in biology can be heuristically transposed to the case of galaxies. This approach that we call "astrocladistics" has been first applied to Dwarf Galaxies of the Local Group and provides the first evolutionary galaxy tree. The cladogram is sufficiently solid to support the existence of a hierarchical organization in the diversity of galaxies, making it possible to track ancestral types of galaxies. We also find that morphology is a summary of more fundamental properties. Astrocladistics applied to cosmology simulated galaxies can, unsurprisingly, reconstruct the correct "genealogy". It reveals evolutionary lineages, divergences from common ancestors, character evolution behaviours and shows how mergers organize galaxy diversity. Application to real normal galaxies is in progress. Astrocladistics opens a new way to analyse galaxy evolution and a path towards a new systematics of galaxies

    Charmonium properties from lattice QCD + QED: hyperfine splitting, J/ψJ/\psi leptonic width, charm quark mass and aμca_{\mu}^c

    We have performed the first nf=2+1+1n_f = 2+1+1 lattice QCD computations of the properties (masses and decay constants) of ground-state charmonium mesons. Our calculation uses the HISQ action to generate quark-line connected two-point correlation functions on MILC gluon field configurations that include u/du/d quark masses going down to the physical point, tuning the cc quark mass from MJ/ψM_{J/\psi} and including the effect of the cc quark's electric charge through quenched QED. We obtain MJ/ψ−MηcM_{J/\psi}-M_{\eta_c} (connected) = 120.3(1.1) MeV and interpret the difference with experiment as the impact on MηcM_{\eta_c} of its decay to gluons, missing from the lattice calculation. This allows us to determine ΔMηcannihiln\Delta M_{\eta_c}^{\mathrm{annihiln}} =+7.3(1.2) MeV, giving its value for the first time. Our result of fJ/ψ=f_{J/\psi}= 0.4104(17) GeV, gives Γ(J/ψ→e+e−)\Gamma(J/\psi \rightarrow e^+e^-)=5.637(49) keV, in agreement with, but now more accurate than experiment. At the same time we have improved the determination of the cc quark mass, including the impact of quenched QED to give m‾c(3 GeV)\overline{m}_c(3\,\mathrm{GeV}) = 0.9841(51) GeV. We have also used the time-moments of the vector charmonium current-current correlators to improve the lattice QCD result for the cc quark HVP contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We obtain aμc=14.638(47)×10−10a_{\mu}^c = 14.638(47) \times 10^{-10}, which is 2.5σ\sigma higher than the value derived using moments extracted from some sets of experimental data on R(e+e−→hadrons)R(e^+e^- \rightarrow \mathrm{hadrons}). This value for aμca_{\mu}^c includes our determination of the effect of QED on this quantity, δaμc=0.0313(28)×10−10\delta a_{\mu}^c = 0.0313(28) \times 10^{-10}.Comment: Added extra discussion on QED setup, some new results to study the effects of strong isospin breaking in the sea (including new Fig. 1) and a fit stability plot for the hyperfine splitting (new Fig. 7).     A Review of Electrospun Carbon Fibers as Electrode Materials for Energy Storage

    The applications of electrospun carbon fiber webs to the development of energy storages devices, including both supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries (LIB) , are reviewed. Following a brief discussion of the fabrication process and characterization methods for ultrafine electrospun carbon fibers, recent advances in their performance as supercapacitors and LIBs anode materials are summarized. Optimization of the overall electrochemical properties of these materials through choice of thermal treatment conditions, incorporation of additional active components (such as carbon nanotubes, metal oxides, and catalysts), and generation of novel fibrous structures (such as core-shell, multi-channel or porous fibers) is highlighted. Further challenges related to improving the conductivity, surface area, and mechanical properties of the carbon nanofiber webs, as well as the scale-up ability of the fabrication technique, are discussed.United States.
