    Trauma Informed Care Scale: Turkish Validity and Reliability Study

    The aim of this study is to adapt the trauma-informed care scale, a scale developed to measure the level of knowledge, attitude and practice related to trauma-informed care, to Turkish culture by making the appropriate analysis. 161 mental health professionals participated in this survey model study. The data of the study were collected by using the convenience sampling method, the demographic information form and the Trauma Informed Care Scale. The data were generated through the online data collection platform surveey.com. It was determined that most of the mental health professionals (70.2%) in the study had never heard of the trauma-informed care model, and 87% did not use this model in their practice. The EFA analysis showed that a 3-factor structure was emerged, which explained 50.36% of the total variance and in which all items were included in the subscales of the original scale. According to the results of the analyzes, 3 items in the Attitude subscale were removed from the total items of the scale and the final version of 18 items scale that could be used in Turkish culture was created. The correlation analyzes showed that the total mean score was highly and positively correlated with all subscales. The Trauma-Informed Care Scale is a reliable measurement tool with proven structural validity and suitable for use by mental health professionals (physicians, nurses, psychologists, psychological counselors, social workers) working with trauma survivors, and researchers planning studies on trauma-informed care and/or trauma-sensitive care

    Comparison of Particle Shape, Surface Area, and Color Properties of the Calcite Particles Ground by Stirred and Ball Mill

    Since the particle size, shape, specific surface area, and purity of the ground calcium carbonate (GCC) decide its usability in the paper, paint, and plastic industries, the effect of grinding is important. However, the effect of stirred and ball mill grinding on the particle shape of GCC by dynamic image analysis (DIA) is still lacking in the literature. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the aspect ratio at the same fineness (d97 = 50 μm) and evaluate other properties such as color, and surface area of GCC particles by stirred and ball mill grindings. DIA results showed that particles produced by the ball mill had higher aspect ratio values than those by the stirred mill. This was attributed to the impact, and attrition breakage modes produced by the ball and stirred mill, respectively. This conclusion is supported by XRD and SEM. Finally, the results related to physical properties such as aspect ratio, surface area, and whiteness are discussed depending on the usage area of GCC

    The learning curve of sting method for endoscopic injection treatment of vesicoureteral reflux

    ABSTRACT Objective: To identify how many endoscopic injection (EI) procedures, STING method, must be performed before reaching an ideal success rate when simulation training has not been received. Materials and Methods: The EI procedures performed by two pediatric urology fellows were investigated. The study excluded patients without primary VUR and those with previous EI or ureteroneocystostomy, lower urinary tract dysfunction, and/or duplicate ureters. The EIs used dextranomer hyaluronate and the STING method, as described by O’Donnell and Puri. Groups number was determined by multiple statistical trials. Statistically significance differences were achieved with one combination that had 35 EI procedures each and with 3 different combination of patients, having 12, 24, and 36 patients, respectively. Therefore, groups were established 12 patients. The first fellow performed 54 EIs, and the second performed 51. Therefore, each of the first fellow's three groups contained 18 EI procedures, and each of the second fellow's 17. Results: The study included 72 patients and 105 ureter units. When the data from both fellows were combined, each of the three groups contained 35 procedures. For the first fellow, the success rates in the first, second, and third groups were 38.3%, 66.6%, and 83.3% (p = 0.02), respectively, and for the second fellow, the success rates were 41.2%, 64.7%, and 82.3% (p = 0.045), respectively. The increased success rates for both fellows were very similar. Conclusions: An acceptable rate of success for EI may be reached after about 20 procedures and a high success rate after about 35-40 procedures

    Diagnosis and treatment of carotid body tumors

    ABSTRACT Objective: Carotid body tumors (CBTs), especially familial paragangliomas, are rare benign neoplasm, accounting for <0.5% of all tumors; and they are the most common extra-adrenal paraganglioma. Because of peripheral vascular and neural invasion or compression of tumors, early diagnosis and treatments are very important, whereas this kind of tumors have got slow progression and low malignity potential. The aim of this study was to review an institutional experience in the management of paragangliomas. Methodology: In this study, CBTs were clinically suspected in 33 patients but diagnosed by histopathology in between 1999 and 2011 at our department. Three of these patients presented with bilateral tumors. All but one was operated upon. The ages of the 48.3 surgically treated patients ranged 32-58 years. A mass in the neck was the common symptom in all patients. The patients were classified according to the Shamblin classification. There were 17 patients (11 women 6 men) in the first group, 13 patients (9 women, 4 men) in the second group, and 3 patients (2 women 1 man) in the third group. Results: All of these 33 surgically treated patients had confirmed CBT by histopathology. CBTs were resected without a shunt procedure. No mortality occurred, however one patient experienced Horner syndrome post operatively. In the follow up period, no recurrences were observed. Three of the patients was had hoarseness, but improved after six months. No stroke occurred in the patients. Conclusion: CBTs are infrequent neoplasm; their surgical treatment is highly dependent on the ability and experience of the surgeon. The diagnostic and therapeutic relevance reside in making a timely diagnosis to propose a surgical treatment aimed at preventing complications and neurological damage. Surgical resection is usually definitive therapy for these lesions

    Association between penetrating eye injuries and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children

Methods 45 children aged 3-18 years who were treated due to penetrating ocular injuries (patient group) and 75 control subjects (control group) were enrolled in the study. the symptoms of ADHD were evaluated by the Turkish adapted and validated form of the Conner Parent Rating Scale (CPRS). Results the mean age was 8.9 +/- 4.1 years in the patient group and 9.7 +/- 3.7 years in the control group. All subscale scores of CPRS were higher in the patient group compared with the control group (all p < 0.05). Gender-specific analyses showed that the boys of the patient group had significantly higher mean scores of all subscales, including inattentiveness, hyperactivity, oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, compared with the boys of the control group (all p < 0.05). However, the girls of the patient group had higher mean scores of only the conduct disorder subscale (p < 0.05) compared with the girls of the control group. Three of 45 patients (6.6%) and 0 of 75 control subjects (0%) had a history of previous ocular trauma (p < 0.05). Conclusions There was an association between penetrating eye injuries and inattentiveness, hyperactivity, oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder in boys, and conduct disorder in girls. An appropriate evaluation of ADHD symptoms may prevent vision loss due to penetrating eye injuries in children. in addition, evaluation by a child psychiatrist of children presenting with penetrating eye injuries may prevent repetition of injuries

    Efficacy of Sorafenib In Advanced Differentiated and Medullary Thyroid Cancer: Experience In A Turkish Population

    Purpose: Chronic otitis media with effusion (OME) is the leading cause of hearing loss during childhood. In bacterial etiology of OME, the most frequent pathogens responsible are Haemophilus influenzae followed by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Moraxella catarrhalis . This study aimed at evaluating the accuracy of nasopharyngeal (NP) specimens in the identification of pathogens in the middle ear fluid (MEF) in patients with OME. Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional, case-control study, 95 MEFs and 53 NP secretion specimens were obtained from 53 children. As a control group, 102 NP specimens were taken from children having an operation other than an otological disease. Conventional culture methods and multiplex-PCR method have been used to determine the etiology of OME; NP carriage between cases and control groups were compared using conventional culture methods. Pearson Chi-Square and Fisher's Exact tests were used in statistical analysis. Results : Bacteria were isolated by culture in 37.9% of MEF specimens, 14.7% of which belonged to the group H. influenzae , S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis. PCR was positive in 30.5% specimens targeting the same pathogens. There was a two-fold increase in carriage rate of S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae in patients than controls for each pathogen. Conclusion: PCR is a more reliable method to detect middle ear pathogens in MEF in comparison with the conventional culture methods. The NP colonization wasn't found to be an indicator of the pathogen in MEF although middle ear pathogens colonize more in nasopharynx of diseased children.WoSPubMe

    c-Myc-induced Aberrant DNA Synthesis and Activation of DNA Damage Response in p300 Knockdown Cells*

    We previously showed that in quiescent cells, p300/CBP (CREB-binding protein)family coactivators repress c-myc and prevent premature induction of DNA synthesis. p300/CBP-depleted cells exit G1 early and continue to accumulate in S phase but do not progress into G2/M, and eventually they die of apoptosis. Here, we show that the S-phase arrest in these cells is because of an intra-S-phase block. The inappropriate DNA synthesis that occurs as a result of forced expression of c-myc leads to the activation of the DNA damage response as evidenced by the phosphorylation of several checkpoint related proteins and the formation of foci containing γ-H2AX. The activation of checkpoint response is related to the induction of c-myc, as the phosphorylation of checkpoint proteins can be reversed when cells are treated with a c-Myc inhibitor or when Myc synthesis is blocked by short hairpin RNA. Using the DNA fiber assay, we show that in p300-depleted cells initiation of replication occurs from multiple replication origins. Chromatin loading of the Cdc45 protein also indicates increased origin activity in p300 knockdown cells. Immunofluorescence experiments indicate that c-Myc colocalizes with replication foci, consistent with the recently reported direct role of c-Myc in the initiation of DNA synthesis. Thus, the inappropriate S-phase entry of p300 down-regulated cells is likely to be because of c-Myc-induced deregulated replication origin activity, which results in replicative stress, activation of a DNA damage response, and S-phase arrest. Our results point to an important role for p300 in maintaining genomic integrity by negatively regulating c-myc
