Singular Thought: The Division of Explanatory Labor

A tacit assumption in the literature devoted to singular thought is that singular thought constitutes a unitary phenomenon, and so a correct account of it must encompass all instances. In this essay, I argue against such a unitary account. The superficial feature of singularity might result from ver y different deep-level phenomena. Following Taylor (2010) and Crane (2013), I distinguish between the referential fitness and the referential success of a thought. I argue that facts responsible for referential fitness (e.g., mental files or individual concepts), as well as facts responsible for referential success (e.g., acquaintance conditions on referential success), are relevant in explaining the data pertaining to a theory of singular thought. A Retrospective Surgical Experience Regarding Open and Laparoscopic Procedures of the Hepatic Hydatid Cyst with an up to Date Complete Review of the Literature And a Focus On Original Romanian Techniques

Introduction: Even though the development of the recent anti-parasitic drugs has led to a high degree of efficiency, surgical treatment still remains the gold standard for a number of conditions. Material and method. The authors discuss a series of 90 cases in a multicenter and retrospective analysis that stretches over 20 years. Results and discussions. These cases have been diagnosed and treated – through different surgical methods, both classical and laparoscopic – for hepatic hydatid cysts. The paper also presents a short review of the major types of surgical procedures cited in the international literature, with a specific focus on the advantages brought by Romanian innovations in this field. Conclusions. Even though the classical open approach still assumes the first place among surgical procedures, modern laparoscopic techniques have earned a much appreciated place in providing positive results based on long-term assessment, with virtually no or only minor complications. In this regard the Romanian school of surgery has offered a significant contribution to this field

Countercyclical Taxes in a Monopolistically Competitive Environment

In a neoclassical growth model with monopolistic competition in the product market, distortionary taxes, and debt, countercyclical income tax rates can reduce the volatility of output, consumption, and investment. The variability of employment however is a non-monotonic function of the income elasticity of the tax rate. In terms of welfare, the reduced volatility raises welfare. However, when solving the model with a second order approximation, so that agents take direct account of the level of uncertainty when making decisions, then the reduced volatility results in agents accumulating less capital and lowers consumption in the long run. This second effect dominates in the welfare calculations so that countercyclical taxes end up reducing welfare. The fiscal financing role of income taxes tends to raise the volatility of aggregate variables and can lead to a destabilizing role of countercyclical taxes. In 1997, due to high rates of diabetes and increasing treatment and management costs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) introduced the largest national campaign to prevent diabetes. HOW TO BETTER MEET OUR STUDENTSï¿1/2 LEARNING STYLE THROUGH THE COURSE RESOURCES

Publishers of the course resources for business higher education are willing to help professors and instructors to develop the learning process. An important part of the learning process is affected by the each studentï¿1/2s learning style. Our paper focuses on how meeting studentsï¿1/2 learning styles can be done through the course resources we use. The scope of the paper is to identify a way to link studentsï¿1/2 learning preferences with the available course resources. The literature on this topic is limited, the interest in research being focused less on resources used and their useful diversity. We heavily relied in our research on the preliminary results of a market research study conducted by the Higher Education Group from Harvard Business Publishing among instructors who use resources from Harvard Business Schoolï¿1/2s library. The research methodology is based on the case study method. We tried to recommend a treatment to our students and then analyze the effect of the applied treatment. The main instruments used are the VARK test followed by tailored recommendations for each student. The first conclusion of the research is that identifying the learning styles is extremely useful for students in terms of learning process. Knowing and exploiting their particular learning style helped students to maximize their learning. The second conclusion is that recommending resources based on learning styles is useful because it really helps students to learn in their own styles. The results of our paper show, firstly, that learning process could be facilitated by professorsï¿1/2 directly identifying studentsï¿1/2 learning styles. Secondly, our findings underline the importance of having a diversity of resources available for our students, and to be able to offer them a constructive solution regarding their learning styles. Moreover, our contributions are reflected in the methodology we used in linking the learning styles with the course resources and in building our personal approach in issuing our students individual recommendations on study strategy based upon their learning styles.learning process, course resources, learning styles, VARK test physiological dimension of learning
