TGF-β in tolerance, development and regulation of immunity
AbstractThe TGF-β superfamily is an ancient metazoan protein class which cuts across cell and tissue differentiation, developmental biology and immunology. Its many members are regulated at multiple levels from intricate control of gene transcription, post-translational processing and activation, and signaling through overlapping receptor structures and downstream intracellular messengers. We have been interested in TGF-β homologues firstly as key players in the induction of immunological tolerance, the topic so closely associated with Ray Owen. Secondly, our interests in how parasites may manipulate the immune system of their host has also brought us to study the TGF-β pathway in infections with longlived, essentially tolerogenic, helminth parasites. Finally, within the spectrum of mammalian TGF-β proteins is an exquisitely tightly-regulated gene, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), whose role in sex determination underpins the phenotype of freemartin calves that formed the focus of Ray’s seminal work on immunological tolerance

Pengaruh Konsentrasi Rhizopus Sp. Sebagai Agen Pengikis Protein Terhadap Mutu Kulit Kambing Tersamak
This research was carried out at the Yogyakarta Center for Leather, Rubber and Plastics Laboratory for the development and processing of leather waste. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the concentration of Rhizopus sp. as a protein-eroding agent in the quality of tanned goat skin. The method used in this study is an experimental method using a material Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 3 replications. The research treatments that were tried were T0 (use of batting agent (palkobat) with a concentration of 2%), T1 (use of Rhizopus sp. With a concentration of 0.5%), T2 (use of Rhizopus sp. With a concentration of 1%), T3 ( use of Rhizopus sp. with a concentration of 1.5%, and T4 (use of Rhizopus sp. with a concentration of 2%). The data were analyzed statistically using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The best test results obtained on T2 treatment is by using Rhizopus sp. with a concentration of 1% with a yield of 1 mm skin thickness,
elongation of 51.47%, tear strength of 176.90 N / cm, and tensile strength of 1308.52 N / cm2
