    Light-induced reflectivity transients in black-Si nanoneedles

The change in reflectivity of black-Si (b-Si) upon optical excitation was measured by the pump-probe technique using picosecond laser pulses at 532 (pump) and 1064 nm (probe) wavelengths. The specular reflection from the random pattern of plasma-etched b-Si nano-needles was dominated by the photo-excited free-carrier contribution to the reflectivity. The kinetics of the reflectivity were found to be consistent with surface structural and chemical analysis, performed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The surface recombination velocity on the b-Si needles was estimated to be ~102cm/s. Metalization of b-Si led to much faster recombination and alteration of reflectivity. The reflectivity spectra of random b-Si surfaces with different needle lengths was modeled by a multi-step refractive index profile in the Drude formalism. The dip in the reflectivity spectra and the sign reversal in the differential reflectivity signal at certain b-Si needle sizes is explained by the model

    Landscape of international event-based biosurveillance

    Event-based biosurveillance is a scientific discipline in which diverse sources of data, many of which are available from the Internet, are characterized prospectively to provide information on infectious disease events. Biosurveillance complements traditional public health surveillance to provide both early warning of infectious disease events and situational awareness. The Global Health Security Action Group of the Global Health Security Initiative is developing a biosurveillance capability that integrates and leverages component systems from member nations. This work discusses these biosurveillance systems and identifies needed future studies

    Multiple phosphorus acquisition strategies adopted by fine roots in low-fertility soils in Central Amazonia

Therefore, it is hypothesised that plants may invest a substantial proportion of their resources belowground to adjust their P-uptake strategies, including root morphological, physiological (phosphatase enzyme activities) and biotic (arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) associations) adaptations. Since these strategies are energy demanding, we hypothesise that trade-offs between morphological traits and root phosphatase exudation and symbiotic associations would occur. Specifically, we expected that plants which invest in finer roots, and therefore have greater ability to explore large soil volumes, would have a high investment in physiological adaptations such as enhanced phosphatase production. In contrast, we expected that plants with predominantly thicker roots would invest more in symbiotic associations, in which carbon is traded for P acquired from AM fungal communities. Methods We collected absorptive roots (<2 mm diameter) from a lowland Central Amazon forest near Manaus, Brazil. We measured fine root diameter, specific root length (SRL), specific root area (SRA), root tissue density (RTD), root phosphatase activity (APase) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi colonisation. Results Root morphological traits were related to APase activity, with higher APase activity in roots with higher SRL and SRA but lower RTD. However, the degree of AM colonisation was not related to any measured root morphological trait. Conclusions Fine absorptive roots likely benefit from having low RTD, high SRL, SRA and APase exudation to acquire P efficiently.     A machine learning and directed network optimization approach to uncover TP53 regulatory patterns

    TP53, the Guardian of the Genome, is the most frequently mutated gene in human cancers and the functional characterization of its regulation is fundamental. To address this we employ two strategies: machine learning to predict the mutation status of TP53 from transcriptomic data, and directed regulatory networks to reconstruct the effect of mutations on the transcipt levels of TP53 targets. Using data from established databases (Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia, The Cancer Genome Atlas), machine learning could predict the mutation status, but not resolve different mutations. On the contrary, directed network optimization allowed to infer the TP53 regulatory profile across: (1) mutations, (2) irradiation in lung cancer, and (3) hypoxia in breast cancer, and we could observe differential regulatory profiles dictated by (1) mutation type, (2) deleterious consequences of the mutation, (3) known hotspots, (4) protein changes, (5) stress condition (irradiation/hypoxia). This is an important first step toward using regulatory networks for the characterization of the functional consequences of mutations, and could be extended to other perturbations, with implications for drug design and precision medicine

    Observation of bright polariton solitons in a semiconductor microcavity

    Microcavity polaritons are composite half-light half-matter quasi-particles, which have recently been demonstrated to exhibit rich physical properties, such as non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation, parametric scattering and superfluidity. At the same time, polaritons have some important advantages over photons for information processing applications, since their excitonic component leads to weaker diffraction and stronger inter-particle interactions, implying, respectively, tighter localization and lower powers for nonlinear functionality. Here we present the first experimental observations of bright polariton solitons in a strongly coupled semiconductor microcavity. The polariton solitons are shown to be non-diffracting high density wavepackets, that are strongly localised in real space with a corresponding broad spectrum in momentum space. Unlike solitons known in other matter-wave systems such as Bose condensed ultracold atomic gases, they are non-equilibrium and rely on a balance between losses and external pumping. Microcavity polariton solitons are excited on picosecond timescales, and thus have significant benefits for ultrafast switching and transfer of information over their light only counterparts, semiconductor cavity lasers (VCSELs), which have only nanosecond response time

    Emplacement of inflated Pāhoehoe flows in the Naude’s Nek Pass, Lesotho remnant, Karoo continental flood basalt province: use of flow-lobe tumuli in understanding flood basalt emplacement

    Physical volcanological features are presented for a 710-m-thick section, of the Naude’s Nek Pass, within the lower part of the Lesotho remnant of the Karoo Large Igneous Province. The section consists of inflated pāhoehoe lava with thin, impersistent sedimentary interbeds towards the base. There are seven discreet packages of compound and hummocky pāhoehoe lobes containing flow-lobe tumuli, making up approximately 50% of the section. Approximately 45% of the sequence consists of 14 sheet lobes, between 10 and 52-m-thick. The majority of the sheet lobes are in two packages indicating prolonged periods of lava supply capable of producing thick sheet lobes. The other sheet lobes are as individual lobes or pairs, within compound flows, suggesting brief increases in lava supply rate. We suggest, contrary to current belief, that there is no evidence that compound flows are proximal to source and sheet lobes (simple flows) are distal to source and we propose that the presence of flow-lobe tumuli in compound flows could be an indicator that a flow is distal to source. We use detailed, previously published, studies of the Thakurvadi Formation (Deccan Traps) as an example. We show that the length of a lobe and therefore the sections that are ‘medial or distal to source’ are specific to each individual lobe and are dependent on the lava supply of each eruptive event, and as such flow lobe tumuli can be used as an indicator of relative distance from source

    Structural parameters of galaxies in CANDELS

    We present global structural parameter measurements of 109,533 unique, H-F160W-selected objects from the CANDELS multi-cycle treasury program. Sersic model fits for these objects are produced with GALFIT in all available near-infrared filters (H-F160W, J(F125W) and, for a subset, Y-F105W). The parameters of the best-fitting Sersic models (total magnitude, half-light radius, Sersic index, axis ratio, and position angle) are made public, along with newly constructed point-spread functions for each field and filter. Random uncertainties in the measured parameters are estimated for each individual object based on a comparison between multiple, independent measurements of the same set of objects. To quantify systematic uncertainties, we create a mosaic with simulated galaxy images with a realistic distribution of input parameters and then process and analyze the mosaic in an identical manner as the real data. We find that accurate and precise measurements-to 10% or better-of all structural parameters can typically be obtained for galaxies with H-F160W < 23, with comparable fidelity for basic size and shape measurements for galaxies to H-F160W similar to 24.5

    Coexistence between renal cell cancer and Hodgkin's lymphoma: A rare coincidence

    BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma is the most common kidney tumor in adults and accounts for approximately 3% of adult malignancies. An increased incidence of second malignancies has been well documented in a number of different disorders, such as head and neck tumors, and hairy cell leukemia. In addition, treatment associated second malignancies (usually leukemias and lymphomas but also solid tumors) have been described in long term survivors of Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL), Non Hodgkin's lymphoma and in various pediatric tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 66 year-old woman with abdominal pain and dyspnea. We performed a thorax CT scan that showed lymph nodes enlargement and subsequently by presence of abdominal pain was performed an abdominal and pelvis CT scan that showed a right kidney tumor of 4 × 5 cms besides of abdominal lymph nodes enlargement. A radical right nephrectomy was designed and Hodgkin's lymphoma was diagnosed in the abdominal lymph nodes while renal cell tumor exhibited a renal cell cancer. Patient received EVA protocol achieving complete response. CONCLUSION: We described the first case reported in the medical literature of the coexistence between Hodgkin's lymphoma and renal cell cancer. Previous reports have shown the relationship of lymphoid neoplasms with solid tumors, but they have usually described secondary forms of cancer related to chemotherapy

    This chapter considers the distribution of job contracts — in terms of casual jobs, temporary jobs (that is, those of less than a year’s duration), and permanent jobs — across different subgroups of the population. Although the analysis of chapter 5 echoes that of chapter 3, which is cast in terms of regular salaried and wage employment and casual employment, the novelty of chapter 5 is two-fold. First, it explicitly addresses the question of job tenure: while much of the regular salaried and wage employment discussed in chapter 3 may have been permanent employment, some of it may not have been. Second, and more importantly, it addresses the issue of “desirable jobs” using a data set different from the NSS data used in the earlier chapter (that is, unit record data from the Indian Human Development Survey relating to the period 2011–12). The Survey provides details about the job tenure of persons by distinguishing between three types of jobs: casual (daily or piecework), contracts of less than one year duration (hereafter, simply, “contract jobs”), and permanent. The importance of the analysis contained in this chapter is that if one defines job insecurity as workers’ fear of involuntary job loss, job insecurity has negative consequences for employees’ attitudes towards their job, their health, and the quality of their relationship with their employers
