Neutrino mixing in matter
Three-neutrino mixing in matter is studied through a set of evolution
equations which are based on a rephasing invariant parametrization. Making use
of the known properties of measured neutrino parameters, analytic, approximate,
solutions are obtained. Their accuracy is confirmed by comparison with
numerical integration of these equations. The results, when expressed in the
elements squared of the mixing matrix, exhibit striking patterns as the matter
density varies.Comment: Revised, 5 pages, 3 figures, references added
Large emergency-response exercises: qualitative characteristics - a survey
Exercises, drills, or simulations are widely used, by governments, agencies and commercial organizations, to simulate serious incidents and train staff how to respond to them. International cooperation has led to increasingly large-scale exercises, often involving hundreds or even thousands of participants in many locations. The difference between âlargeâ and âsmallâ exercises is more than one of size: (a) Large exercises are more âexperientialâ and more likely to undermine any model of reality that single organizations may create; (b) they create a âplay spaceâ in which organizations and individuals act out their own needs and identifications, and a ritual with strong social implications; (c) group-analytic psychotherapy suggests that the emotions aroused in a large group may be stronger and more difficult to control. Feelings are an unacknowledged major factor in the success or failure of exercises; (d) successful large exercises help improve the nature of trust between individuals and the organizations they represent, changing it from a situational trust to a personal trust; (e) it is more difficult to learn from large exercises or to apply the lessons identified; (f) however, large exercises can help develop organizations and individuals. Exercises (and simulation in general) need to be approached from a broader multidisciplinary direction if their full potential is to be realized
Towards a Pervasive Access Control within Video Surveillance Systems
Part 1: Cross-Domain Conference and Workshop on Multidisciplinary Research and Practice for Information Systems (CD-ARES 2013)International audienceThis paper addresses two emerging challenges that multimedia distributed systems have to deal with: the userâs constant mobility and the informationâs sensitivity. The systems have to adapt, in real time, to the userâs context and situation in order to provide him with relevant results without breaking the security and privacy policies. Distributed multimedia systems, such as the oneproposed by the LINDO project, do not generally consider both issues. In this paper, we apply an access control layer on top of the LINDO architecture that takes into consideration the userâs context and situation and recommends alternative resources to the user when he is facing an important situation. The proposed solution was implemented and tested in a video surveillance use case

Gene-expression analysis of clozapine treatment in whole blood of patients with psychosis
OBJECTIVES: Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic primarily prescribed for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. We tested the specific effect of clozapine versus other drug treatments on whole-blood gene expression in a sample of patients with psychosis from the UK.
METHODS: A total of 186 baseline whole-blood samples from individuals receiving treatment for established psychosis were analysed for gene expression on Illumina HumanHT-12.v4 BeadChips. After standard quality-control procedures, 152 samples remained, including 55 from individuals receiving clozapine. In a within-case study design, weighted gene correlation network analysis was used to identify modules of coexpressed genes. The influence of mood stabilizers, lithium carbonate/lithium citrate and sodium valproate was studied to identify their possible roles as confounders.
RESULTS: Individuals receiving clozapine as their only antipsychotic (clozapine monotherapy) had a nominal association with one gene-expression module, whereas no significant change in gene expression was found for other drugs.
CONCLUSION: Overall, this study does not provide evidence that clozapine treatment induces medium to large different gene-expression patterns in human whole blood versus other antipsychotic treatments. This does not rule out the possibility of smaller effects as observed for other common antipsychotic treatments
Cosmological Implications of Neutrinos
The lectures describe several cosmological effects produced by neutrinos.
Upper and lower cosmological limits on neutrino mass are derived. The role that
neutrinos may play in formation of large scale structure of the universe is
described and neutrino mass limits are presented. Effects of neutrinos on
cosmological background radiation and on big bang nucleosynthesis are
discussed. Limits on the number of neutrino flavors and mass/mixing are given.Comment: 41 page, 7 figures; lectures presented at ITEP Winter School,

Quasiparticle spectra in the vicinity of a d-wave vortex
We discuss the evolution of the local quasiparticle spectral density and the
related tunneling conductance measurable by the scanning tunneling microscope,
as a function of distance r and angle \theta from the vortex core in a
d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor. We consider the effects of electronic disorder and
of a strongly anisotropic tunneling matrix element, and show that in real
materials they will likely obscure the ~1/r asymptotic tail in the zero-bias
tunneling conductance expected from the straightforward semiclassical analysis.
We also give a prediction for the tunneling conductance anisotropy around the
vortex core and establish a connection to the structure of the tunneling matrix
element.Comment: 9 pages REVTeX + 5 PostScript figures. For related work and info

A NuSTAR Survey of Nearby Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
We present a Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), Chandra, and XMM-Newton survey of nine of the nearest ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). The unprecedented sensitivity of NuSTAR at energies above 10 keV enables spectral modeling with far better precision than was previously possible. Six of the nine sources observed were detected sufficiently well by NuSTAR to model in detail their broadband X-ray spectra, and recover the levels of obscuration and intrinsic X-ray luminosities. Only one source (IRAS 13120â5453) has a spectrum consistent with a Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN), but we cannot rule out that a second source (Arp 220) harbors an extremely highly obscured AGN as well. Variability in column density (reduction by a factor of a few compared to older observations) is seen in IRAS 05189â2524 and Mrk 273, altering the classification of these borderline sources from Compton-thick to Compton-thin. The ULIRGs in our sample have surprisingly low observed fluxes in high-energy (>10 keV) X-rays, especially compared to their bolometric luminosities. They have lower ratios of unabsorbed 2â10 keV to bolometric luminosity, and unabsorbed 2â10 keV to mid-IR [O iv] line luminosity than do Seyfert 1 galaxies. We identify IRAS 08572+3915 as another candidate intrinsically X-ray weak source, similar to Mrk 231. We speculate that the X-ray weakness of IRAS 08572+3915 is related to its powerful outflow observed at other wavelengths

A multilevel neo-institutional analysis of infection prevention and control in English hospitals: coerced safety culture change?
Despite committed policy, regulative and professional efforts on healthcare safety, little is known about how such macro-interventions permeate organisations and shape culture over time. Informed by neo-institutional theory, we examined how inter-organisational influences shaped safety practices and inter-subjective meanings following efforts for coerced culture change. We traced macro-influences from 2000 to 2015 in infection prevention and control (IPC). Safety perceptions and meanings were inductively analysed from 130 in-depth qualitative interviews with senior- and middle-level managers from 30 English hospitals. A total of 869 institutional interventions were identified; 69% had a regulative component. In this context of forced implementation of safety practices, staff experienced inherent tensions concerning the scope of safety, their ability to be open and prioritisation of external mandates over local need. These tensions stemmed from conflicts among three co-existing institutional logics prevalent in the NHS. In response to requests for change, staff flexibly drew from a repertoire of cognitive, material and symbolic resources within and outside their organisations. They crafted 'strategies of action', guided by a situated assessment of first-hand practice experiences complementing collective evaluations of interventions such as 'pragmatic', 'sensible' and also 'legitimate'. Macro-institutional forces exerted influence either directly on individuals or indirectly by enriching the organisational cultural repertoire
