A PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF SOME FLUORIDE COMPOUNDS - II
These two parts were issued separately, but are cataloged as a unit. The two compounds Na/sub 4/U/sub 3/F/sub 17/ and Na/sub 3/Th/sub 2/F/sub 11/ were found to have a face-centered cubic structure. From parameter dimensions and intensity values these two compounds appear to be isomorphous. Na/sub 5/U/sub 3/F/sub 17/ has an identical cell size with alpha -Na/sub 2//UF/sub 6/. A group of three compounds (Rb/sub 2/ThF/sub Rb/sub 2/ZrF/sub 6/, and CsZrF/sub 6/) were reliably identified as being uniaxial by use of their optical properties. These compounds were tentatively indexed on the basis of data obtained from powder x-ray spectrometer patterns found to best fit a hexagonal unit cell. (W.L.H.
Finite-size scaling study of the d=4 site-diluted Ising
We study the four dimensional site-diluted Ising model using finite-size
scaling techniques. We explore the whole parameter space (density-coupling) in
order to determine the Universality Class of the transition line. Our data are
compatible with Mean Field behavior plus logarithmic corrections.Comment: Contribution to LATTICE 9
Effect of 50 Hz Electromagnetic Fields on the Induction of Heat-Shock Protein Gene Expression in Human Leukocytes
Although evidence is controversial, exposure to environmental power-frequency magnetic fields is of public concern. Cells respond to some abnormal physiological conditions by producing cytoprotective heat-shock (or stress) proteins. In this study, we determined whether exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields in the range 0–100 μT rms either alone or concomitant with mild heating induced heat-shock protein gene expression in human leukocytes, and we compared this response to that induced by heat alone. Samples of human peripheral blood were simultaneously exposed to a range of magnetic-field amplitudes using a regimen that was designed to allow field effects to be distinguished from possible artifacts due to the position of the samples in the exposure system. Power-frequency magnetic-field exposure for 4 h at 37°C had no detectable effect on expression of the genes encoding HSP27, HSP70A or HSP70B, as determined using reverse transcriptase-PCR, whereas 2 h at 42°C elicited 10-, 5- and 12-fold increases, respectively, in the expression of these genes. Gene expression in cells exposed to power-frequency magnetic fields at 40°C was not increased compared to cells incubated at 40°C without field exposure. These findings and the extant literature suggest that power-frequency electromagnetic fields are not a universal stressor, in contrast to physical agents such as heat
Learning Mixtures of Polynomials of Conditional Densities from Data
Mixtures of polynomials (MoPs) are a non-parametric density estimation technique for hybrid Bayesian networks with continuous and discrete variables. We propose two methods for learning MoP approximations of conditional densities from data. Both approaches are based on learning MoP approximations of the joint density and the marginal density of the conditioning variables, but they differ as to how the MoP approximation of the quotient of the two densities is found. We illustrate the methods using data sampled from a simple Gaussian Bayesian network. We study and compare the performance of these methods with the approach for learning mixtures of truncated basis functions from data
Existence of superposition solutions for pulse propagation in nonlinear resonant media
Existence of self-similar, superposed pulse-train solutions of the nonlinear,
coupled Maxwell-Schr\"odinger equations, with the frequencies controlled by the
oscillator strengths of the transitions, is established. Some of these
excitations are specific to the resonant media, with energy levels in the
configurations of and and arise because of the interference
effects of cnoidal waves, as evidenced from some recently discovered identities
involving the Jacobian elliptic functions. Interestingly, these excitations
also admit a dual interpretation as single pulse-trains, with widely different
amplitudes, which can lead to substantially different field intensities and

An isotope dilution model for partitioning of phenylalanine and tyrosine uptake by the liver of lactating dairy cows
An isotope dilution model to describe the partitioning of phenylalanine (PHE) and tyrosine (TYR) in the bovine liver was developed. The model comprises four intracellular and six extracellular pools and various flows connecting these pools and external blood. Conservation of mass principles were applied to generate the fundamental equations describing the behaviour of the system in the steady state. The model was applied to datasets from multi-catheterised dairy cattle during a constant infusion of [1-13C] phenylalanine and [2,3,5,6-2H] tyrosine tracers. Model solutions described the extraction of PHE and TYR from the liver via the portal vein and hepatic artery. In addition, the exchange of free PHE and TYR between extracellular and intracellular pools was explained and the hydroxylation of PHE to TYR was estimated. The model was effective in providing information about the fates of PHE and TYR in the liver and could be used as part of a more complex system describing amino acid metabolism in the whole animal
Movements of feral camels in central Australia determined by satellite telemetry
Movements of two female one-humped camels in central Australia were tracked using satellite telemetry between March 1986 and July 1987. During that time both animals travelled a minimum distance of over 1000 km within a radius of 125 km for one animal, and 200 km for the other. However, their movements were uite punctuated and both animals spent periods of up to several months in rleatively small areas before moving over longer distances to new areas. Both camels moved at greater rates overnight. An activity index, probably measuring feeding rate, declined during the study period for both animals. Patchy and sporadic rainfall may explain some of these results
The four dimensional site-diluted Ising model: a finite-size scaling study
Using finite-size scaling techniques, we study the critical properties of the
site-diluted Ising model in four dimensions. We carry out a high statistics
Monte Carlo simulation for several values of the dilution. The results support
the perturbative scenario: there is only the Ising fixed point with large
logarithmic scaling corrections. We obtain, using the Perturbative
Renormalization Group, functional forms for the scaling of several observables
that are in agreement with the numerical data.Comment: 30 pages, 8 postscript figure
Maternal and Paternal Infertility Disorders and Treatments and Autism Spectrum Disorder: Findings from the Study to Explore Early Development
Previous studies of associations between ASD and conception using assisted reproductive technology (ART) are inconsistent and few studies have examined associations with other infertility treatments or infertility disorders. We examined associations between ASD and maternal/paternal infertility disorders and numerous maternal treatments among 1538 mother–child pairs in the Study to Explore Early Development, a population-based case-control study. ASD was associated with any female infertility diagnosis and several specific diagnoses: blocked tubes, endometriosis, uterine-factor infertility, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Stratified analyses suggested associations were limited to/much stronger among second or later births. The findings were not explained by sociodemographic factors such as maternal age or education or multiple or preterm birth. ASD was not associated with ART or non-ART infertility treatments
