    Influence of burning and grazing management practices on subirrigated Sandhill meadow hay production

    Subirrigated meadows are a valuable forage resource to Sandhills ranching operations being used for hay production, grazing, or a combination of both. Practices that sustain meadow productivity should be encouraged to ensure a consistent feed supply for cattle. The potential influence of prescribed burning or pre-freeze and post-freeze grazing on forage production and quality are not well understood on these meadows. In grasslands, including meadows, excess dead plant material can accumulate, causing a potential reduction in forage yield and quality. Results of our three-year field study suggest that burning meadows in the spring is a suitable management option to remove dead plant material without negatively affecting future hay production. Additionally, when burning was followed by either grazing exclusion or grazing from early-May to early-June, grazing had a greater influence on end of season biomass, with no interacting effect of burning and grazing. Quality of warm-season grasses was increased slightly following burning, but most improvements in quality were minimal and were a result of spring grazing. Study two evaluates a common practice of grazing meadows in the fall (pre-freeze) and winter (post-freeze) months. In our study, grazing in the fall when vegetation was still green was detrimental to future graminoid production. Relative to pre-freeze grazing, postponing grazing until plant dormancy (post-freeze) returned higher yields of graminoids and total live plant biomass. Deterring meadows from grazing in the fall and winter (control) produced graminoid and total live biomass that was similar to post-freeze treatments. Relative to pre-freeze treatments, summer biomass of ungrazed controls were generally higher in graminoid biomass, while similar in total live biomass. Quality of subsequent year’s forage in pre-freeze treatments was significantly higher than the control or post-freeze treatments and met the total digestible nutrient requirement of lactating cows. Our studies show that tradeoffs in quantity and quality are common under any practice. Therefore individual management objectives should be considered when deciding if a practice is right for them.     Distracted by familiarity:Implications of ‘autopilot’ as a default cognitive mode

    Most trips are made, and most travel is done on roads and paths well-known. To provide insight in the cognitive processes involved in visual information processing of familiar traffic environments this paper considers a series of four consecutive empirical studies. The aim of this paper is 1) to discuss the implications of these insights on research methodologies used to measure driver attention and distraction and 2) to provide recommendations for policymaking, road design and vehicle design. This line of work consists of three studies on car driver behaviour (two driving simulator studies and a video-based study) and an observational study on pedestrian behaviour. The recurring theme in the results of these studies is that the progressive exposure to the same traffic environment enables participants to automatise their behavioural performance in traffic up to the point that it could be executed at skill-based level. As a result, attention is easily diverted away from traffic participation, while participating in traffic. Participants could act without thinking about it, so they didn't always even remember what they had done. People get used to familiar traffic environments so much that they don't have to think about walking or driving with much conscious focus. Hence, when studying road user behaviour and particularly driver distraction, it is crucial to mimic these natural circumstances as closely as possible. It is therefore proposed that within driver distraction research, route familiarity should be regarded as a context that enables distraction. What is more, is that the results point in the direction of a familiarity paradox: deviating from what is very familiar likely results in involuntary distraction, but being very familiar may lead to underload resulting in (voluntarily) diverting attention elsewhere.</p

    BBO and the Neutron-Star-Binary Subtraction Problem

    The Big Bang Observer (BBO) is a proposed space-based gravitational-wave (GW) mission designed primarily to search for an inflation-generated GW background in the frequency range 0.1-1 Hz. The major astrophysical foreground in this range is gravitational radiation from inspiraling compact binaries. This foreground is expected to be much larger than the inflation-generated background, so to accomplish its main goal, BBO must be sensitive enough to identify and subtract out practically all such binaries in the observable universe. It is somewhat subtle to decide whether BBO's current baseline design is sufficiently sensitive for this task, since, at least initially, the dominant noise source impeding identification of any one binary is confusion noise from all the others. Here we present a self-consistent scheme for deciding whether BBO's baseline design is indeed adequate for subtracting out the binary foreground. We conclude that the current baseline should be sufficient. However if BBO's instrumental sensitivity were degraded by a factor 2-4, it could no longer perform its main mission. It is impossible to perfectly subtract out each of the binary inspiral waveforms, so an important question is how to deal with the "residual" errors in the post-subtraction data stream. We sketch a strategy of "projecting out" these residual errors, at the cost of some effective bandwidth. We also provide estimates of the sizes of various post-Newtonian effects in the inspiral waveforms that must be accounted for in the BBO analysis.Comment: corrects some errors in figure captions that are present in the published versio

    Seismic topographic scattering in the context of GW detector site selection

    In this paper, we present a calculation of seismic scattering from irregular surface topography in the Born approximation. Based on US-wide topographic data, we investigate topographic scattering at specific sites to demonstrate its impact on Newtonian-noise estimation and subtraction for future gravitational-wave detectors. We find that topographic scattering at a comparatively flat site in Oregon would not pose any problems, whereas scattering at a second site in Montana leads to significant broadening of wave amplitudes in wavenumber space that would make Newtonian-noise subtraction very challenging. Therefore, it is shown that topographic scattering should be included as criterion in the site-selection process of future low-frequency gravitational-wave detectors.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

    PP-waves on Superbrane Backgrounds

    In this paper we discuss a method of generating supersymmetric solutions of the Einstein equations. The method involves the embedding of one supersymmetric spacetime into another. We present two examples with constituent spacetimes which support "charges", one of which was known previously and the other of which is new.
