The role of a woman is very important not only to take care of domestic life, but almost all activities in various sectors including farming, achievement motivation can lead a woman to succeed in living her life, but there is also within a woman the fear of success. This study aims: (1) To analyze the effect of achievement motivation on the performance of farmer women in Ngkaringkaring Village; (2) To analyze the effect of fear of success on the performance of women farmers in Ngkaringkaring Village; (3) To analyze the influence of achievement motivation and fear of success together on the performance of farmer women in Ngkaringkaring Village. This type of research is a quantitative study using multiple linear regression analysis The population of this study were all farm women who worked in the agricultural sector, amounting to 125 people. The sample of this study was 92 respondents. The results showed that the significant value for the variable of achievement motivation and fear of success on the performance of peasant women in the Seke Subak organization both partial and simultaneous tests gave a significant value smaller than 0.005, so there was an influence, but the fear of success had an influence and was marked negative. This is influenced by the dominance of the family of the peasant woman who requires not taking too long to take care of work outside the home

The bending of cell sheets - from folding to rolling

    Get PDF
The bending of cell sheets plays a major role in multicellular embryonic morphogenesis. Recent advances are leading to a deeper understanding of how the biophysical properties and the force-producing behaviors of cells are regulated, and how these forces are integrated across cell sheets during bending. We review work that shows that the dynamic balance of apical versus basolateral cortical tension controls specific aspects of invagination of epithelial sheets, and recent evidence that tissue expansion by growth contributes to neural retinal invagination in a stem cell-derived, self-organizing system. Of special interest is the detailed analysis of the type B inversion in Volvox reported in BMC Biology by Höhn and Hallmann, as this is a system that promises to be particularly instructive in understanding morphogenesis of any monolayered spheroid system

Expression of the SmB′ splicing protein in rodent cells capable of following an alternative RNA splicing pathway

    Get PDF
AbstractThe expression of the SmB and SmB′ spliceosome proteins in a variety of cell types and tissues has been investigated. Although SmB is found in all cells studied, the SmB′ protein is found only in a small number of rodent cell types. The presence of this protein is correlated with the ability to utilize an alternative pathway of RNA splicing which is not available in most cell types. This is the first demonstration of tissue specific expression of a protein component of the spliceosome and suggests a role for SmB′ in the regulation of some cases of alternative RNA splicing

Resolution of the stochastic strategy spatial prisoner's dilemma by means of particle swarm optimization

    Get PDF
We study the evolution of cooperation among selfish individuals in the stochastic strategy spatial prisoner's dilemma game. We equip players with the particle swarm optimization technique, and find that it may lead to highly cooperative states even if the temptations to defect are strong. The concept of particle swarm optimization was originally introduced within a simple model of social dynamics that can describe the formation of a swarm, i.e., analogous to a swarm of bees searching for a food source. Essentially, particle swarm optimization foresees changes in the velocity profile of each player, such that the best locations are targeted and eventually occupied. In our case, each player keeps track of the highest payoff attained within a local topological neighborhood and its individual highest payoff. Thus, players make use of their own memory that keeps score of the most profitable strategy in previous actions, as well as use of the knowledge gained by the swarm as a whole, to find the best available strategy for themselves and the society. Following extensive simulations of this setup, we find a significant increase in the level of cooperation for a wide range of parameters, and also a full resolution of the prisoner's dilemma. We also demonstrate extreme efficiency of the optimization algorithm when dealing with environments that strongly favor the proliferation of defection, which in turn suggests that swarming could be an important phenomenon by means of which cooperation can be sustained even under highly unfavorable conditions. We thus present an alternative way of understanding the evolution of cooperative behavior and its ubiquitous presence in nature, and we hope that this study will be inspirational for future efforts aimed in this direction.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in PLoS ON

What traits are carried on mobile genetic elements, and why?

    Get PDF
Although similar to any other organism, prokaryotes can transfer genes vertically from mother cell to daughter cell, they can also exchange certain genes horizontally. Genes can move within and between genomes at fast rates because of mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Although mobile elements are fundamentally self-interested entities, and thus replicate for their own gain, they frequently carry genes beneficial for their hosts and/or the neighbours of their hosts. Many genes that are carried by mobile elements code for traits that are expressed outside of the cell. Such traits are involved in bacterial sociality, such as the production of public goods, which benefit a cell's neighbours, or the production of bacteriocins, which harm a cell's neighbours. In this study we review the patterns that are emerging in the types of genes carried by mobile elements, and discuss the evolutionary and ecological conditions under which mobile elements evolve to carry their peculiar mix of parasitic, beneficial and cooperative genes

PhosPhAt: the Arabidopsis thaliana phosphorylation site database. An update

    Get PDF
The PhosPhAt database of Arabidopsis phosphorylation sites was initially launched in August 2007. Since then, along with 10-fold increase in database entries, functionality of PhosPhAt (phosphat.mpimp-golm.mpg.de) has been considerably upgraded and re-designed. PhosPhAt is now more of a web application with the inclusion of advanced search functions allowing combinatorial searches by Boolean terms. The results output now includes interactive visualization of annotated fragmentation spectra and the ability to export spectra and peptide sequences as text files for use in other applications. We have also implemented dynamic links to other web resources thus augmenting PhosPhAt-specific information with external protein-related data. For experimental phosphorylation sites with information about dynamic behavior in response to external stimuli, we display simple time-resolved diagrams. We have included predictions for pT and pY sites and updated pS predictions. Access to prediction algorithm now allows ‘on-the-fly’ prediction of phosphorylation of any user-uploaded protein sequence. Protein Pfam domain structures are now mapped onto the protein sequence display next to experimental and predicted phosphorylation sites. Finally, we have implemented functional annotation of proteins using MAPMAN ontology. These new developments make the PhosPhAt resource a useful and powerful tool for the scientific community as a whole beyond the plant sciences
