Body mass index and age affect Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire scores in male subjects

This cross-sectional analysis evaluated the effect of age and body mass index (BMI) on Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire scores in males. Subjects (n = 60) were recruited according to BMI status. Each completed the 51-item Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire. The group was split at the median age to produce a "younger" and "older" group for statistical analysis. A 2-way between-groups analysis of variance revealed a significant main effect of BMI on disinhibition (P = .003) and hunger (P = .041) with higher levels found in overweight males compared to healthy-weight counterparts. A significant main effect of age on hunger (P = .046) demonstrated older males were less susceptible to hunger than younger males. These insights provide a better understanding of eating behavior across the male life cycle and may assist health professionals to better guide men in weight management in the light of rising overweight/obesity. Outreach and Engagement Staff and Communities of Practice: A Journey from Practice to Theory for an Emerging Professional Identity and Community

The emergence and recognition of outreach and engagement staff and non-tenure track faculty in higher education literature as key figures in the success of university outreach and community engagement are welcome developments for these practitioners. This article describes the perceptions of outreach and engagement staff at large, public research universities with decentralized engagement initiatives. The authors describe efforts to organize outreach and community engagement staff to create supportive networks, improve practice, provide professional development opportunities, and advocate for practitioner interests and needs. Community-of-practice theory offers a model for connecting, organizing, and sustaining outreach and engagement staff practitioners and their emerging professional identity

Bone metastases mimicking Complex Regional Pain Syndrome I: a case report

INTRODUCTION: Since there are no valid tools available for the diagnosis of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome I, exclusion of other underlying conditions plays an important role in the diagnostic process. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old Caucasian man was referred with painful swelling and dysfunction of the right knee. Based on the history and clinical presentation, the referring physician assumed a case of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome I. However, after careful evaluation of the differential diagnosis, a metastatic urothelial carcinoma was diagnosed. CONCLUSION: Even if the clinical picture resembles Complex Regional Pain Syndrome I, the differential diagnosis must be evaluated carefully

Harnessing the ambiphilicity of silyl nitronates in a catalytic asymmetric approach to aliphatic β³-amino acids

Nitronate anions, formally generated by α-deprotonating the corresponding nitroalkanes, are highly nucleophilic and versatile intermediates in many carbon–carbon bond-forming reactions. In contrast, the corresponding silyl nitronates are ambiphilic and react, at the same carbon atom, with both electrophiles and nucleophiles. However, while their nucleophilicity has been well exploited in catalytic enantioselective reactions with imines and aldehydes, utilizing the electrophilicity of silyl nitronates in asymmetric synthesis has remained elusive. Here we report the facile, efficient and general reactivity of readily available silyl nitronates with silyl ketene acetals, catalysed by highly Lewis-acidic and confined silylium imidodiphosphorimidate catalysts. The products of this reaction, so-called nitroso acetals, are obtained in excellent enantioselectivity and can be easily converted into N-Boc-β3-amino acid esters in a single step

This thesis places three sociological figures in discourse with one another: Ferdinand Tönnies, Emile Durkheim and Friedrich Nietzsche. I argue, within the contexts of the three theorists philosophies, that contemporary society is problematic due to its many artifices enslaving individuals. The effects of these artifices are devastating on individuals living in contemporary society as they become encased in simulacra realities reified by engrained beliefs such as socially defined Âindividuality. I then propose that one possible method of creating individual freedom in contemporary society may be in the establishment of communities based upon deep friendships and trust

The impact of resolution on the representation of Greenland barrier winds and katabatic flows

These systems include barrier winds and katabatic flow that occur along its southeast coast. Global atmospheric reanalyses have proven to be important tools in furthering our understanding of these orographic winds and their role in the climate system. However, there is evidence that the mesoscale characteristics of these systems may be missed in these global products. Here we show that the Arctic System Reanalysis, a higher-resolution regional reanalysis, is able to capture mesoscale features of barrier winds and katabatic flow that are missed or underrepresented in ERA-I, a leading modern global reanalysis. This suggests that our understanding of the impact of these wind systems on the coupled-climate system can be enhanced through the use of higher-resolution regional reanalyses or model data.2015-10-1
