Stoner-Wohlfart model applied to bicrystal magnetoresistance hysteresis
We calculate numerically the magnetization direction as function of magnetic
field in the Stoner-Wohlfart theory and are able to reproduce the shape of the
low-field magnetoresistance hysteresis observed in manganite grain boundary
junctions. Moreover, we show that it is necessary to include biaxial
magnetocrystalline anisotropy to fully describe the grain boundary
magnetoresistance in LaSrMnO/SrTiO bicrystal tunnel
junctions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Graphite-polyimide composite for application to aircraft engines
A combined experimental and theoretical investigation was performed in order to (1) demonstrate that high quality angleplied laminates can be made from HT-S/PMR-RI (PMR in situ polymerization of monomeric reactants), (2) characterize the PMR-PI material and to determine the HT-S unidirectional composite properties required for composite micro and macromechanics and laminate analyses, and (3) select HT-S/PMR-PI laminate configurations to meet the general design requirements for high-tip-speed compressor blades. The results of the investigation showed that HT-S/PMR laminate configurations can be fabricated which satisfy the high-tip-speed compressor blade design requirements when operating within the temperature capability of the polymide matrix
Equations to assess the impact resistance of fiber composites
Numerical analysis of impact resistance of composite materials containing fibers is discussed. Mathematical model of longitudinal impact resistance is presented. Potential impact resistance of various fiber composites as obtained by numerical analysis is presented as plotted curve
Coulomb-Modified Fano Resonance in a One-Lead Quantum Dot
We investigate a tunable Fano interferometer consisting of a quantum dot
coupled via tunneling to a one-dimensional channel. In addition to Fano
resonance, the channel shows strong Coulomb response to the dot, with a single
electron modulating channel conductance by factors of up to 100. Where these
effects coexist, lineshapes with up to four extrema are found. A model of
Coulomb-modified Fano resonance is developed and gives excellent agreement with
experiment.Comment: related papers available at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed
Bonding of strain gages to fiber reinforced composite plastic materials
Strain gage is installed during molding of composite and utilizes the adhesive properties of the matrix resin in the composite to bond the strain gage in place. Gages thus embedded provide data at all temperatures that the matrix can withstand
Cotunneling Spectroscopy in Few-Electron Quantum Dots
Few-electron quantum dots are investigated in the regime of strong tunneling
to the leads. Inelastic cotunneling is used to measure the two-electron
singlet-triplet splitting above and below a magnetic field driven
singlet-triplet transition. Evidence for a non-equilibrium two-electron
singlet-triplet Kondo effect is presented. Cotunneling allows orbital
correlations and parameters characterizing entanglement of the two-electron
singlet ground state to be extracted from dc transport.Comment: related papers available at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed
Fast Single-Charge Sensing with an rf Quantum Point Contact
We report high-bandwidth charge sensing measurements using a GaAs quantum
point contact embedded in a radio frequency impedance matching circuit
(rf-QPC). With the rf-QPC biased near pinch-off where it is most sensitive to
charge, we demonstrate a conductance sensitivity of 5x10^(-6) e^(2)/h Hz^(-1/2)
with a bandwidth of 8 MHz. Single-shot readout of a proximal few-electron
double quantum dot is investigated in a mode where the rf-QPC back-action is
rapidly switched.Comment: related papers available at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed
Interlaced Dynamical Decoupling and Coherent Operation of a Singlet-Triplet Qubit
We experimentally demonstrate coherence recovery of singlet-triplet
superpositions by interlacing qubit rotations between Carr-Purcell (CP) echo
sequences. We then compare performance of Hahn, CP, concatenated dynamical
decoupling (CDD) and Uhrig dynamical decoupling (UDD) for singlet recovery. In
the present case, where gate noise and drift combined with spatially varying
hyperfine coupling contribute significantly to dephasing, and pulses have
limited bandwidth, CP and CDD yield comparable results, with T2 ~ 80
microseconds.Comment: related papers at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed
Representing climate and extreme weather events in integrated assessment models: A review of existing methods and options for development
The lack of information about future changes in extreme weather is a major constraint of Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) of climate change. The generation of descriptions of future climate in current IAMs is assessed. We also review recent work on scenario development methods for weather extremes, focusing on those issues which are most relevant to the needs of IAMs. Finally, some options for implementing scenarios of weather extremes in IAMs are considered
Rapid Single-Shot Measurement of a Singlet-Triplet Qubit
We report repeated single-shot measurements of the two-electron spin state in
a GaAs double quantum dot. The readout scheme allows measurement with fidelity
above 90% with a 7 microsecond cycle time. Hyperfine-induced precession between
singlet and triplet states of the two-electron system are directly observed, as
nuclear Overhauser fields are quasi-static on the time scale of the measurement
cycle. Repeated measurements on millisecond to second time scales reveal
evolution of the nuclear environment.Comment: supplemental material at
