    Periodic motor impairments in a case of 48-hour bipolar ultrarapid cycling before and under treatment with valproate

    Motor impairments of psychiatric patients can be assessed with digital recordings of handwriting tasks. The investigation of patients with bipolar affective disorders differentiates intraindividual changes related to the patient's fluctuating affective states. An unmedicated 67-year-old male with 48-hour bipolar ultrarapid cycling was investigated during 8 consecutive days of ultrarapid cycling and 4 weeks later, after remission under treatment with valproate. The handwriting skills of the patient followed the same rhythmic changes of the psychopathology in the first part of the study and a steady pattern in the second phase, after remission. Therefore, it can be assumed that the handwriting skills reflect a state marker of the disease. Poorer handwriting skills on the manic days, as compared to the depressive ones, support the hypothesis of a low arousal in manic patients. Copyright (C) 2000 S. Karger AG, Basel

    Tissue engineering: a challenge of today's medicine

    During the last years, tissue engineering-based therapies have been introduced in clinical practice in the head and face area. The regeneration of complex tissue structures for all sites of the body is envisioned for the future. In the present situation, specialists of the different fields publish excellent research papers in specialised journals. As a result, the scientific community, seperated towards distinct sub-specialities, has difficulties in communication. To overcome this problem, the demanding, complex and interdisciplinary aspects of tissue engineering has to be approached from new ways. We have conceptualised Head & Face Medicine therefore as a thematically broad ranged journal, including all disciplines involved in the head and neck area. We hope this journal will attract basic researchers and clinicians who are involved in investigating and applying complex themes (examplified by tissue engineering) in the head and face region and will contribute to a gain in scientific information, communication, and collaboration in order to improve the outcome of patient treatments

    The 3D-structure of a natural inhibitor of cell adhesion molecule expression

    AbstractThe three-dimensional structure of cyclopeptolide HUN-7293, a naturally-occurring inhibitor of cell adhesion molecule expression, has been determined from nuclear magnetic resonance data recorded in solution and from X-ray diffraction analysis of single crystals. The backbone conformation of HUN-7293 is characterized by two cis-peptide bonds in both the solution and crystalline state. Differences between the solution and crystal structure are visible for the orientation of some side chains and the strength of two transannular hydrogen bonds. Such structural information helps to provide insight into the molecular architecture of HUN-7293 on the atomic level and opens the way for structure-based modifications of this novel inhibitor of cell adhesion molecule expression

    After an introduction describing the significance and a short history of catalysis at Ciba-Geigy, the present role of the Catalysis Section within the Central Research Services is outlined. Its main activities are preparative services for the synthetic chemists in the fields of hydrogenation and high-pressure reactions, the development of catalytic processes and a research program in the fields of enantioselective catalysis, the modification of heterogeneous catalytic systems, acid-base catalysis and catalytic C–C-bond forming reactions. Because catalysis is considered by Ciba-Geigy to be a key technology, the main goal of its R+D program in catalysis is to create and maintain a reliable scientific and technical foundation for the optimal application of catalytic reactions throughout the company. Some results are presented that illustrate the work described above and an outlook on the opportunities of catalytic technologies in the fine chemicals industry is given

    Prevalence, 20-month incidence and outcome of unipolar depressive disorders in a community sample of adolescents

    Background. This article presents prospective longitudinal findings on prevalence, incidence, patterns of change and stability of depressive disorders in a community sample of 1228 adolescents. Methods. Data were collected at baseline and follow-up (20 months later) in a representative population sample of 1228 adolescents, aged 14–17 at baseline. Diagnostic assessment was based on the Munich Composite International Diagnostic Interview (M-CIDI). Results. The overall cumulative lifetime incidence of any depressive condition was 20·0% (major depressive disorder (MDD), 12·2%; dysthymia, 3·5%; subthreshold MDD, 6·3%), of which about one-third were incident depressions in the period between baseline and follow-up. Depressive disorders rarely started before the age of 13. Females were about twice as likely as males to develop a depressive disorder. Overall, the 20-month outcome of baseline depression was unfavourable. Dysthymia had the poorest outcome of all, with a complete remission rate of only 33% versus 43% for MDD and 54% for subthreshold MDD. Dysthymia also had the highest number of depressive episodes, and most psychosocial impairment and suicidal behavioural during follow-up. Treatment rates were low (8–23%). Subthreshold MDD associated with considerable impairment had an almost identical course and outcome as threshold MDD. Conclusions. DSM-IV MDD and dysthymia are rare before the age of 13, but frequent during adolescence, with an estimated lifetime cumulative incidence of 14%. Only a minority of these disorders in adolescence is treated, and more than half of them persist or remit only partly

    Sex recognition in brown skuas: do acoustic signals matter?

    Bird vocalisations are often essential for sex recognition, especially in species that show little morphological sex dimorphism. Brown skuas (Catharacta antarctica lonnbergi), which exhibit uniform plumage across both sexes, emit three main calls: the long call, the alarm call and the contact call. We tested the potential for sex recognition in brown skua calls of 42 genetically sexed individuals by analysing 8-12 acoustic parameters in the temporal and frequency domains of each call type. For every call type, we failed to find sex differences in any of the acoustic parameters measured. Stepwise discriminant function analysis (DFA) revealed that sexes cannot be unambiguously classified, with increasing uncertainty of correct classification from contact calls to long calls to alarm calls. Consequently, acoustic signalling is probably not the key mechanism for sex recognition in brown skua

    Ein empirischer Datensatz wurde analysiert, um Empfehlungen zur optimalen Faktorallokation in einem Feld­versuchssystem zur Erfassung des Krautfäulebefalls bei Kartoffel zu geben. Der Datensatz stammt von einem Experiment mit 854 Genotypen, drei Jahren, zwei Wiederholungen pro Jahr und 16 bis 18 Boniturterminen pro Jahr. AUDPC (area under disease progress curve) Werte wurden auf der Basis von Prozent Krautbefall berechnet. Zur Etablierung der Krautfäule im Bestand wurde künstliche Inokulation verwendet. Drei Prüfjahre, zwei Wiederholungen pro Jahr, und drei Boniturtermine werden als ausreichend empfohlen. Diese Ergebnisse gehen von der Voraussetzung aus, dass die Qualität der Daten unabhängig ist von der Häufigkeit der Datenerhebung. Diese Voraussetzung wird kritisch diskutiert.An empirical data set was analysed in order to give recommendations on the optimal resource allocation in a field testing system to measure late blight attack in potato. The data set was derived from an experiment comprising 854 genotypes, three years, two replicates per year, and 16 to 18 scoring dates per year. AUDPC (area under disease progress curve) values were calcu­lated based on percentage of attacked haulm. Artificial inoculation was used to establish late blight in the testing field. Three testing years, two replicates per year, and three scoring dates per year are recommended to be sufficient. The results are based on the assumption, that the quality of data is independent of the frequency of data collection. This assumption is critically discussed
