Comparative Study of Active Flow Control Strategies for Lift Enhancement of a Simplified High-Lift Configuration
Numerical simulations have been performed for a simplified high-lift (SHL) version of the Common Research Model (CRM) configuration, where the Fowler flaps of the conventional high-lift (CRM-HL) configuration are replaced by a set of simple hinged flaps. These hinged flaps are equipped with integrated modular active flow control (AFC) cartridges on the suction surface, and the resulting geometry is known as the CRM-SHL-AFC configuration. The main objective is to make use of AFC devices on the CRM-SHL-AFC configuration to recover the aerodynamic performance (lift) of the CRM-HL configuration. In the current paper, a Lattice Boltzmann method-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, known as PowerFLOWQ is used to simulate the entire flow field associated with the CRM-SHL-AFC configuration equipped with several different types of AFC devices. The transonic version of the PowerFLOWQ code that has been validated for high speed flows is used to accurately simulate the flow field generated by the high-momentum actuators required to mitigate reversed flow regions on the suction surfaces of the main wing and the flap. The numerical solutions predict the expected trends in aerodynamic forces as the actuation levels are increased. More efficient AFC systems and actuator arrangements emerged based on the parametric studies performed prior to a Fall 2018 wind tunnel test. Preliminary comparisons of the numerical solutions for lift and surface pressures are presented here with the experimental data, demonstrating the usefulness of CFD for predicting the flow field and lift characteristics of AFC-enabled high-lift configurations
Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Compressible Fluid Flow in Two-Dimensional Channels
We study compressible fluid flow in narrow two-dimensional channels using a
novel molecular dynamics simulation method. In the simulation area, an upstream
source is maintained at constant density and temperature while a downstream
reservoir is kept at vacuum. The channel is sufficiently long in the direction
of the flow that the finite length has little effect on the properties of the
fluid in the central region. The simulated system is represented by an
efficient data structure, whose internal elements are created and manipulated
dynamically in a layered fashion. Consequently the code is highly efficient and
manifests completely linear performance in simulations of large systems. We
obtain the steady-state velocity, temperature, and density distributions in the
system. The velocity distribution across the channel is very nearly a quadratic
function of the distance from the center of the channel and reveals velocity
slip at the boundaries; the temperature distribution is only approximately a
quartic function of this distance from the center to the channel. The density
distribution across the channel is non-uniform. We attribute this
non-uniformity to the relatively high Mach number, approximately 0.5, in the
fluid flow. An equation for the density distribution based on simple
compressibility arguments is proposed; its predictions agree well with the
simulation results. Validity of the concept of local dynamic temperature and
the variation of the temperature along the channel are discussed.Comment: 16 pages (in latex) + 8 figures (in a single ps file). Submitted to

Resonant X-Ray Scattering on the M-Edge Spectra from Triple-k Structure Phase in U_{0.75}Np_{0.25}O_{2} and UO_{2}
We derive an expression for the scattering amplitude of resonant x-ray
scattering under the assumption that the Hamiltonian describing the
intermediate state preserves spherical symmetry. On the basis of this
expression, we demonstrate that the energy profile of the RXS spectra expected
near U and Np M_4 edges from the triple-k antiferromagnetic ordering phase in
UO_{2} and U_{0.75}Np_{0.25}O_{2} agree well with those from the experiments.
We demonstrate that the spectra in the \sigma-\sigma' and \sigma-\pi' channels
exhibit quadrupole and dipole natures, respectively.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. Supp
Experiências de contacto dos bebés com a linguagem escrita
The purpose of this study is to characterize the literacy experiences ofbabies aged between 14 and 24 months. In this study, four issues were analysed: which type of written language experiences are offered to the children, how parents value these literacy experiences, the way parents perceive their own role in the literacy development of their children and what parents know about their means of contributing to the literacy development of their children. Six mothers were interviewed. These interviews were analysed with the use of a categorical content analysis. The results suggest that mothers value and include in their practices facilitative and mediation actions of literacy experiences with their children, noting some variability depending on the respective qualifications.
Benchmarking of 3D space charge codes using direct phase space measurements from photoemission high voltage DC gun
We present a comparison between space charge calculations and direct
measurements of the transverse phase space for space charge dominated electron
bunches after a high voltage photoemission DC gun followed by an emittance
compensation solenoid magnet. The measurements were performed using a
double-slit setup for a set of parameters such as charge per bunch and the
solenoid current. The data is compared with detailed simulations using 3D space
charge codes GPT and Parmela3D with initial particle distributions created from
the measured transverse and temporal laser profiles. Beam brightness as a
function of beam fraction is calculated for the measured phase space maps and
found to approach the theoretical maximum set by the thermal energy and
accelerating field at the photocathode.Comment: 11 pages, 23 figures. submitted to Phys Rev ST-A
X-Ray Resonant Scattering as a Direct Probe of Orbital Ordering in Transition-Metal Oxides
X-ray resonant scattering at the K-edge of transition metal oxides is shown
to measure the orbital order parameter, supposed to accompany magnetic ordering
in some cases. Virtual transitions to the 3d-orbitals are quadrupolar in
general. In cases with no inversion symmetry, such as VO, treated in
detail here, a dipole component enhances the resonance. Hence, we argue that
the detailed structure of orbital order in VO is experimentally
accessible.Comment: LaTex using RevTex, 4 pages and two included postscript figure
Modifications of the metabolic pathways of lipid and triacylglycerol production in microalgae
Microalgae have presented themselves as a strong candidate to replace diminishing oil reserves as a source of lipids for biofuels. Here we describe successful modifications of terrestrial plant lipid content which increase overall lipid production or shift the balance of lipid production towards lipid varieties more useful for biofuel production. Our discussion ranges from the biosynthetic pathways and rate limiting steps of triacylglycerol formation to enzymes required for the formation of triacylglycerol containing exotic lipids. Secondarily, we discuss techniques for genetic engineering and modification of various microalgae which can be combined with insights gained from research in higher plants to aid in the creation of production strains of microalgae
Relativistic theory of magnetic scattering of x rays: Application to ferromagnetic iron
We present a detailed description of a first-principles formalism for magnetic scattering of circularly polar- ized x rays from solids in the framework of the fully relativistic spin-polarized multiple-scattering theory. The scattering amplitudes are calculated using a standard time-dependent perturbation theory to second order in the electron-photon interaction vertex. Particular attention is paid to understanding the relative importance of the positive- and negative-energy solutions of the Dirac equation to the scattering amplitude. The advantage of the present theory as compared with other recent works on magnetic x-ray scattering is that, being fully relativistic, spin-orbit coupling and spin-polarization effects are treated on an equal footing. Second, the electron Green’s function expressed in terms of the path operators in the multiple-scattering theory allows us to include the contribution of the crystalline environment to the scattering amplitude. To illustrate the use of the method we have done calculations on the anomalous magnetic scattering at the K , L_II , and L_III absorption edges of ferromagnetic iron
Dicer-2 Processes Diverse Viral RNA Species
RNA silencing pathways play critical roles in gene regulation, virus infection, and transposon control. RNA interference (RNAi) is mediated by small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), which are liberated from double-stranded (ds)RNA precursors by Dicer and guide the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to targets. Although principles governing small RNA sorting into RISC have been uncovered, the spectrum of RNA species that can be targeted by Dicer proteins, particularly the viral RNAs present during an infection, are poorly understood. Dicer-2 potently restricts viral infection in insects by generating virus-derived siRNAs from viral RNA. To better characterize the substrates of Dicer-2, we examined the virus-derived siRNAs produced during the Drosophila antiviral RNAi response to four different viruses using high-throughput sequencing. We found that each virus was uniquely targeted by the RNAi pathway; dicing substrates included dsRNA replication intermediates and intramolecular RNA stem loops. For instance, a putative intergenic RNA hairpin encoded by Rift Valley Fever virus generates abundant small RNAs in both Drosophila and mosquito cells, while repetitive sequences within the genomic termini of Vaccinia virus, which give rise to abundant small RNAs in Drosophila, were found to be transcribed in both insect and mammalian cells. Moreover, we provide evidence that the RNA species targeted by Dicer-2 can be modulated by the presence of a viral suppressor of RNAi. This study uncovered several novel, heavily targeted features within viral genomes, offering insight into viral replication, viral immune evasion strategies, and the mechanism of antiviral RNAi. © 2013 Sabin et al
Coherent control of the cooperative branching ratio for nuclear x-ray pumping
Coherent control of nuclear pumping in a three level system driven by x-ray
light is investigated. In single nuclei, the pumping performance is determined
by the branching ratio of the excited state populated by the x-ray pulse. Our
results are based on the observation that in ensembles of nuclei, cooperative
excitation and decay leads to a greatly modified nuclear dynamics, which we
characterize by a time-dependent cooperative branching ratio. We discuss
prospects of steering the x-ray pumping by coherently controlling the
cooperative decay. First, we study an ideal case with purely superradiant decay
and perfect control of the cooperative emission. A numerical analysis of x-ray
pumping in nuclear forward scattering with coherent control of the cooperative
decay via externally applied magnetic fields is presented. Next, we provide an
extended survey of nuclei suitable for our scheme, and propose
proof-of-principle implementations already possible with typical M\"ossbauer
nuclear systems such as . Finally, we discuss the application
of such control techniques to the population or depletion of long-lived nuclear
states.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures; updated to the published versio
