Two distinct red giant branch populations in the globular cluster NGC 2419 as tracers of a merger event in the Milky Way
Recent spectroscopic observations of the outer halo globular cluster (GC) NGC
2419 show that it is unique among GCs, in terms of chemical abundance patterns,
and some suggest that it was originated in the nucleus of a dwarf galaxy. Here
we show, from the Subaru narrow-band photometry employing a calcium filter,
that the red giant-branch (RGB) of this GC is split into two distinct
subpopulations. Comparison with spectroscopy has confirmed that the redder RGB
stars in the [=(Ca] index are enhanced in [Ca/H] by 0.2
dex compared to the bluer RGB stars. Our population model further indicates
that the calcium-rich second generation stars are also enhanced in helium
abundance by a large amount (Y = 0.19). Our photometry, together with
the results for other massive GCs (e.g., Cen, M22, and NGC 1851),
suggests that the discrete distribution of RGB stars in the index might be
a universal characteristic of this growing group of peculiar GCs. The planned
narrow-band calcium photometry for the Local Group dwarf galaxies would help to
establish an empirical connection between these GCs and the primordial building
blocks in the hierarchical merging paradigm of galaxy formation.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for the publication in ApJ

The same neuron may play different functional roles in the neural circuits to which it belongs. For example, neurons in the Tritonia pedal ganglia may participate in variable phases of the swim motor rhythms [1]. While such neuronal functional variability is likely to play a major role the delivery of the functionality of neural systems, it is difficult to study it in most nervous systems. We work on the pyloric rhythm network of the crustacean stomatogastric ganglion (STG) [2]. Typically network models of the STG treat neurons of the same functional type as a single model neuron (e.g. PD neurons), assuming the same conductance parameters for these neurons and implying their synchronous firing [3, 4]. However, simultaneous recording of PD neurons shows differences between the timings of spikes of these neurons. This may indicate functional variability of these neurons. Here we modelled separately the two PD neurons of the STG in a multi-neuron model of the pyloric network. Our neuron models comply with known correlations between conductance parameters of ionic currents. Our results reproduce the experimental finding of increasing spike time distance between spikes originating from the two model PD neurons during their synchronised burst phase. The PD neuron with the larger calcium conductance generates its spikes before the other PD neuron. Larger potassium conductance values in the follower neuron imply longer delays between spikes, see Fig. 17.Neuromodulators change the conductance parameters of neurons and maintain the ratios of these parameters [5]. Our results show that such changes may shift the individual contribution of two PD neurons to the PD-phase of the pyloric rhythm altering their functionality within this rhythm. Our work paves the way towards an accessible experimental and computational framework for the analysis of the mechanisms and impact of functional variability of neurons within the neural circuits to which they belong
Natural product anticipation via chemical synthesis: Discovery of two new securinega alkaloids
Summary: The isolation of a natural product conventionally precedes its chemical synthesis. Often, the isolation and structure determination of a natural product present in minute quantities in its natural source pose formidable challenges, akin to finding “a needle in a haystack.” On the other hand, leveraging plausible biosynthetic insights and biomimetic synthetic expertise would allow for the prior synthesis of presumed natural products, followed by their verification in natural sources. In this study, we unveil two novel securinega alkaloids, securingines H and I, employing the natural product anticipation through synthesis approach. Structural analysis of securingines H and I suggests that they are biosynthetic derivatives of secu’amamine E and securinol A, respectively. We posit that this “synthesis first” strategy represents a valuable approach to the discovery of new natural products
DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF THE BEAM POSITION MONITOR FOR THE PEFP LINAC
The beam position monitor (BPM) is an essential component for the PEFP 100-MeV linac's commissioning. A prototype stripline-type linac BPM was designed for this purpose. The electrode aperture is 20 mm in diameter, and the electrode is 25 mm long, so it can be installed between Drift Tube Linac (DTL)101 and DTL102, which is the shortest distance. One end of the electrode is connected to the Sub Miniature Type A (SMA) feed through for signal measurement, and the other end is terminated as a short. The signal amplitude of the fundamental component was calculated and compared with that of the second harmonic component. The designed BPM was fabricated and a low-power RF test was conducted. In this paper, the design, fabrication and low power test of the BPM for the PEFP linac are presented
Incidence and Levels of Deoxynivalenol, Fumonisins and Zearalenone Contaminants in Animal Feeds Used in Korea in 2012
The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and levels of deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisins B1 and B2 (FBs), and zearalenone (ZEN) contaminants in animal feeds used in Korea in 2012. Contamination with DON was observed in 91.33% and 53.33% in compound feeds and feed ingredients, respectively. Among compound feeds, poultry layer feed (laying) exhibited the highest contaminant level of 1.492 mg/kg. FBs contaminants were present in compound feeds and feed ingredients at 93.33% and 83.33%, respectively. Most poultry broiler (early) feeds were highly contaminated with FBs, and one of these feeds detected the level as 12.823 mg/kg as the highest level. The levels of ZEN in compound feeds and feed ingredients were 71.33% and 47%, respectively. Ninety-eight percent of compound feeds for cattle were contaminated with ZEN, and the highest contamination level of 0.405 mg/kg was observed in cattle fatting feeds
Suggesting Design Method for Performance Evaluation System Based on IoT Data: Considering UX
The rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology makes it possible to connect various objects among each other and to collect sensor data from the objects. Connected car, achieved by advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), is one of the representative example of IoT technology. Since massive amount of IoT data could be effectively analyzed with appropriate methods, it is helpful to introduce supportive systems for the analysis. This study proposes a method to design supportive system for the analysis of IoT data considering user experience (UX). The suggested method is applied to design the supportive system for lane keeping assistance system (LKAS), which is one of the ADAS.1
Modelling the Intrusive Feelings of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Based on Vehicle Activity Log Data: Case Study for the Lane Keeping Assistance System
Although the automotive industry has been among the sectors that best-understands the importance of drivers' affect, the focus of design and research in the automotive field has long emphasized the visceral aspects of exterior and interior design. With the adoption of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), endowing semi-autonomy' to the vehicles, however, the scope of affective design should be expanded to include the behavioural aspects of the vehicle. In such a shared-control' system wherein the vehicle can intervene in the human driver's operations, a certain degree of intrusive feelings' are unavoidable. For example, when the Lane Keeping Assistance System (LKAS), one of the most popular examples of ADAS, operates the steering wheel in a dangerous situation, the driver may feel interrupted or surprised because of the abrupt torque generated by LKAS. This kind of unpleasant experience can lead to prolonged negative feelings such as irritation, anxiety, and distrust of the system. Therefore, there are increasing needs of investigating the driver's affective responses towards the vehicle's dynamic behaviour. In this study, four types of intrusive feelings caused by LKAS were identified to be proposed as a quantitative performance indicator in designing the affectively satisfactory behaviour of LKAS. A metric as well as a statistical data analysis method to quantitatively measure the intrusive feelings through the vehicle sensor log data.11Nsciescopuskc
Near-Field Magnetic Induction MIMO Communication Using Heterogeneous Multipole Loop Antenna Array for Higher Data Rate Transmission
In this paper, we propose a novel method realizing multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) transmission in near-field magnetic induction (NFMI) communication for increasing channel capacity where limited capacity is a major bottleneck problem in magnetic communication systems. Since conventional magnetic communication systems using the same antenna patterns cannot easily implement MIMO transmission due to strong crosstalk between transmitters, we propose heterogeneous antenna arrays with multipole antennas, enabling crosstalk cancellation. We confirm the crosstalk cancellation of the proposed antenna array through numerical simulations and experiments, and verify the capacity enhancement of the proposed NFMI communication system over conventional NFMI communication schemes. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
