    Stokes Parameters as a Minkowskian Four-vector

    It is noted that the Jones-matrix formalism for polarization optics is a six-parameter two-by-two representation of the Lorentz group. It is shown that the four independent Stokes parameters form a Minkowskian four-vector, just like the energy-momentum four-vector in special relativity. The optical filters are represented by four-by-four Lorentz-transformation matrices. This four-by-four formalism can deal with partial coherence described by the Stokes parameters. A four-by-four matrix formulation is given for decoherence effects on the Stokes parameters, and a possible experiment is proposed. It is shown also that this Lorentz-group formalism leads to optical filters with a symmetry property corresponding to that of two-dimensional Euclidean transformations.Comment: RevTeX, 22 pages, no figures, submitted to Phys.     Investigation of demographic factors in construction employees' safety perceptions

    This study focused on the effects of these demographic factors on construction employees’ safety perceptions. It first initiated a theoretical framework illustrating the impacts of demographic factors (i.e., education level, gender, and age) on employee’s perceptions towards pre-defined site hazards as well as their general safety perception. Then site questionnaire survey approach was adopted in nine construction jobsites in southeastern China followed by statistical analysis. The study revealed that construction employees’ education level, although not affecting their perceptions towards safety hazards/accidents, could create differences in other general safety perceptions between management staff and workers. Gender differences were found in safety perceptions of hazard/accident scenes and general safety perceptions, indicating that gender issue in safety perceptions applied consistently crossing different industries. Employees between 37 and 46 years old tended to underestimate safety risks from commonly encountered hazards, suggesting the needs of continued safety refreshers for employees in the middle of their career. This study contributed to the body of knowledge in safety perceptions by investigating the effect of three major subgroup or demographic factors, including education level, gender, and age, which had not been sufficiently addressed in construction safety subculture or sub-climate

    Iwasawa Effects in Multi-layer Optics

    There are many two-by-two matrices in layer optics. It is shown that they can be formulated in terms of a three-parameter group whose algebraic property is the same as the group of Lorentz transformations in a space with two space-like and one time-like dimensions, or the Sp(2)Sp(2) group which is a standard theoretical tool in optics. Among the interesting mathematical properties of this group, the Iwasawa decomposition drastically simplifies the matrix algebra under certain conditions, and leads to a concise expression for the S-matrix for transmitted and reflected rays. It is shown that the Iwasawa effect can be observed in multi-layer optics, and a sample calculation of the S-matrix is given.Comment: RevTex 10 pages including 1 psfi

    KDM2B/FBXL10 targets c-Fos for ubiquitylation and degradation in response to mitogenic stimulation.

    KDM2B (also known as FBXL10) controls stem cell self-renewal, somatic cell reprogramming and senescence, and tumorigenesis. KDM2B contains multiple functional domains, including a JmjC domain that catalyzes H3K36 demethylation and a CxxC zinc-finger that recognizes CpG islands and recruits the polycomb repressive complex 1. Here, we report that KDM2B, via its F-box domain, functions as a subunit of the CUL1-RING ubiquitin ligase (CRL1/SCF(KDM2B)) complex. KDM2B targets c-Fos for polyubiquitylation and regulates c-Fos protein levels. Unlike the phosphorylation of other SCF (SKP1-CUL1-F-box)/CRL1 substrates that promotes substrates binding to F-box, epidermal growth factor (EGF)-induced c-Fos S374 phosphorylation dissociates c-Fos from KDM2B and stabilizes c-Fos protein. Non-phosphorylatable and phosphomimetic mutations at S374 result in c-Fos protein which cannot be induced by EGF or accumulates constitutively and lead to decreased or increased cell proliferation, respectively. Multiple tumor-derived KDM2B mutations impaired the function of KDM2B to target c-Fos degradation and to suppress cell proliferation. These results reveal a novel function of KDM2B in the negative regulation of cell proliferation by assembling an E3 ligase to targeting c-Fos protein degradation that is antagonized by mitogenic stimulations

    Feynman's Decoherence

    Gell-Mann's quarks are coherent particles confined within a hadron at rest, but Feynman's partons are incoherent particles which constitute a hadron moving with a velocity close to that of light. It is widely believed that the quark model and the parton model are two different manifestations of the same covariant entity. If this is the case, the question arises whether the Lorentz boost destroys coherence. It is pointed out that this is not the case, and it is possible to resolve this puzzle without inventing new physics.     The Euler-Lagrange Cohomology and General Volume-Preserving Systems

    We briefly introduce the conception on Euler-Lagrange cohomology groups on a symplectic manifold (M2n,ω)(\mathcal{M}^{2n}, \omega) and systematically present the general form of volume-preserving equations on the manifold from the cohomological point of view. It is shown that for every volume-preserving flow generated by these equations there is an important 2-form that plays the analog role with the Hamiltonian in the Hamilton mechanics. In addition, the ordinary canonical equations with Hamiltonian HH are included as a special case with the 2-form 1n1Hω\frac{1}{n-1} H \omega. It is studied the other volume preserving systems on (M2n,ω)({\cal M}^{2n}, \omega).     Studies of new media radiation induced laser

    Various lasants were investigated especially, 2-iodohepafluoropropane (i-C3F7I) for the direct solar pumped lasers. Optical pumping of iodine laser was achieved using a small flashlamp. Using i-C3F7I as a laser gain medium, threshold inversion density, small signal gain, and laser performance at the elevated temperature were measured. The experimental results and analysis are presented. The iodine laser kinetics of the C3F7I and IBr system were numerically simulated. The concept of a direct solar-pumped laser amplifier using (i-C3F7I) as the laser material was evaluated and several kinetic coefficients for i-C3F7I laser system were reexamined.     The language of Einstein spoken by optical instruments

    Einstein had to learn the mathematics of Lorentz transformations in order to complete his covariant formulation of Maxwell's equations. The mathematics of Lorentz transformations, called the Lorentz group, continues playing its important role in optical sciences. It is the basic mathematical language for coherent and squeezed states. It is noted that the six-parameter Lorentz group can be represented by two-by-two matrices. Since the beam transfer matrices in ray optics is largely based on two-by-two matrices or ABCDABCD matrices, the Lorentz group is bound to be the basic language for ray optics, including polarization optics, interferometers, lens optics, multilayer optics, and the Poincar\'e sphere. Because the group of Lorentz transformations and ray optics are based on the same two-by-two matrix formalism, ray optics can perform mathematical operations which correspond to transformations in special relativity.
