Post-Glitch RXTE-PCA Observations of the Vela Pulsar

We report the results of analysis of observations of the Vela Pulsar by PCA on RXTE. Our data consists of two parts. The first part contains observations at 1, 4, and 9 days after the glitch in 1996 and has 27000 sec. total exposure time. The second part of observations were performed three months after this glitch and have a total exposure time of 93000 sec. We found pulsations in both sets. The observed spectrum is a power-law with no apparent change in flux or count rate. The theoretical expectations of increase in flux due to internal heating after a glitch are smaller than the uncertainty of the observations.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures in 9 ps/eps files. Genista L. (Fabaceae) is distributed in Europe, South Africa, and West Asia and consists of almost 90 species in the world. Thirteen species of the genus are distributed in Turkey. Taxonomic problems of the species started to be resolved with recently developed DNA-based molecular methods. These methods, in contrast to phenotypical analyses, are free from the effects of environmental conditions. In this study, DNA of the species which belong to the Genista genus, grown naturally in Turkey and collected from the different localities, were isolated with a commercial kit. Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) is a simple molecular marker system that provides reliable results. Based on ISSR data, genetic similarities anddendrogram demonstrating the phylogenetic relationships among the Genista taxa were prepared by the NTSYSpc 2.0 software. In this study, infrageneric classifications of the Genista taxa belonging to the Flora of Turkey were conducted based on molecular data. ISSR analysis strongly supported the hypothesis that G. aucheri is accepted as the synonym of G. sessilifolia

The article presents the results of a study of the development of creative activity of students- designers in the artistic and project activities using the method of metaphorical associative cards. Creative activity is considered as a personal feature (set of properties and qualities of a person), its orientation and readiness for the implementation of artistic and project activities. The development of creative activity is conditioned by the necessity of forming the individual's need for creative activity, which will become the student's personal quality. To diagnose the development of creative activity, we offered a method of metaphorical associative cards. The works of artists, natural phenomena, and textures are offered as the metaphorical cards. Based on the selected cards, the students make the training tasks. As a result of a comparative analysis of the diagnosis of the zero and control stages of the creative works of the experimental group, we obtained quantitative and qualitative data that comprehensively characterize the level of development of creative activity of students in accordance with the criteria we have singled out. The reliability of the evaluation of obtained results was determined with the help of mathematical and static processing of the obtained data. To determine the effectiveness of this method, we used the questionnaires made by such authors as M. I. Rozhkova and L.V. Mishchenko, comparative analysis and observation methods. The criteria were determined as the need for mastering and acquiring new knowledge; the conceptual design - the use of expressive means in the composition solution. Discovery of Gamma-ray Emission from M31 via FERMI-LAT

2 years worth of archival FERMI-LAT data was used to search for the gamma-ray emission from the Andromeda galaxy. The data show no noticeable elliptical image. Subsequent on-off source aperture photometry analysis using a CO image template show a 7 sigma excess in the number of on-source apertures in comparison to the off-source apertures, yielding a flux of (4.95+/-0.71)x10-8 photons cm-2 s-1 for E>100 MeV.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of sialendoscopy of the major salivary glands on salivary flow and xerostomia in patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS). METHODS: Forty-five patients with SS were randomly assigned to a control group (no irrigation, control, n = 15), to irrigation of the major salivary glands with saline (saline, n = 15) or to irrigation with saline followed by corticosteroid application (triamcinolone acetonide in saline, saline/TA, n = 15). Unstimulated whole saliva flow (UWSF), chewing-stimulated whole saliva flow (SWSF), citric acid-stimulated parotid flow, Clinical Oral Dryness Score (CODS), Xerostomia Inventory (XI) and EULAR SS Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI) scores were obtained 1 week before (T0), and 1, 8, 16, 24, 36, 48 and 60 weeks after sialendoscopy. Data were analysed using linear mixed models. RESULTS: Irrespective of the irrigation protocol used, sialendoscopy resulted in an increased salivary flow during follow-up up to 60 weeks. Significant between-group differences in the longitudinal course of outcomes were found for UWSF, SWSF, XI and ESSPRI scores (P = 0.028, P = 0.001, P = 0.03, P = 0.021, respectively). UWSF at 60 weeks was higher compared with T0 in the saline group (median: 0.14 vs median: 0.10, P = 0.02) and in the saline/TA group (median: 0.20, vs 0.13, P = 0.035). In the saline/TA group SWSF at 48 weeks was higher compared with T0 (median: 0.74 vs 0.38, P = 0.004). Increase in unstimulated salivary flow was also reflected in improved CODS, XI and ESSPRI scores compared with baseline. CONCLUSION: Irrigation of the major salivary glands in patients with SS increases salivary flow and reduces xerostomia

Machine Learning and Uncertainty Quantification for Surrogate Models of Integrated Devices With a Large Number of Parameters

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the application of the support vector machine (SVM) and the least-squares SVM regressions to the uncertainty quantification of complex systems with a high-dimensional parameter space. The above regression techniques are used to build accurate and compact surrogate models of the system responses from a limited set of training samples. The accuracy and the feasibility of the proposed modeling techniques are then investigated by comparing their results with the ones predicted by a sparse polynomial chaos expansion by considering two real-life problems with 8 and 30 random variables, respectively
