    Regenerating Synovial Lining of the Normal Rabbit Knee: A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study

    Regeneration of the synovial lining in the synovectomized rabbit knee was studied using the scanning electron microscope. The resected synovia regenerated considerably 3 weeks after synovectomy. However, 44 weeks following excision, their surface morphology was still very different from that of the normal tissue of intact animals. The regenerated synovia were characterized by three main features: the large number of various patterns, the many fields harboring fibrillation and the almost total lack of a bubble layer (the latter was formerly shown to be predominant on normal, intact synovia). The surface morphology of the non-operated (contralateral) knee differed greatly from that of normal synovia. The surface of sham-operated synovia was totally covered by the bubble layer. The appearance of vast fields harboring fibrillations indicated deficient ultrastructural regeneration. The altered surface morphology of the contralateral synovia was a novel finding. We wonder whether it would be appropriate to propose that the systemic reaction induced by synovectomy of the experimental knee initiated the synovial appearances recorded on the contralateral knee. The data reported here rule out the possibility of using the contralateral leg as an intact control

    Evaluation of the Use of Tannic Acid in Preparation of the Rabbit Knee Meniscus for Scanning Electron Microscopy

    The femoral faces of medial and lateral menisci of the rabbit knee were structurally reinforced with tannic acid and studied using the scanning electron microscope. Significant improvement in preservation of the meniscal surfaces, as compared to previous studies, was brought about by the structural reinforcement technique. Menisci, although detached from tibial plateaux, retained well their shape, dimensions, and microarchitecture. Differences in surface morphology between medial and lateral menisci and between longitudinal sectors on menisci were recorded. Appearances of surface irregularities were reduced to a very low level, and the possibility that this minimum exists in situ is forwarded

    We prove the maximal local regularity of weak solutions to the parabolic problem associated with the fractional Laplacian with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on an arbitrary bounded open set Ω⊂RN\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^N.     Trait anxiety modulates anterior cingulate activation to threat interference

    Background: Individuals vary in the degree to which salient threatening stimuli disrupt or distract from goal-directed cognitive processes. Excessive attention to threat or difficulty resolving the interference created by threat cues could contribute to anxious psychopathology; disruptions in frontal brain regions implicated in attentional control or resolution of emotional interference (e.g. anterior cingulate cortex, “ACC”) might play a role. In this study, we explored the hypothesis that trait anxiety would be associated with ACC activity in an attentional control task with varying levels of threat interference. Methods: During functional magnetic resonance imaging, 20 healthy individuals who varied in trait anxiety levels viewed angry, fearful, and neutral faces superimposed on an indoor or outdoor scene. In a high-threat interference condition, subjects identified the gender of the face (Attend Face). In a low-threat interference condition, they identified the scene type (Attend Scene). Whole-brain analysis was used to compare Attend Face with Attend Scene for angry and fearful (versus neutral) faces. Contrasts were correlated with trait anxiety level. Results: Behavioral data confirmed that Attend Face produced greater threat interference than Attend Scene. Brain imaging results showed that trait anxiety was inversely associated with bilateral rostral ACC activity for Attend Face relative to Attend Scene for angry faces. A similar relationship was not seen for fearful faces. Conclusions: The rostral ACC is implicated in assessing the salience of emotional information and controlling attention to resolve emotional interference. The link between higher trait anxiety and decreased ACC activation for angry faces suggests reduced attentional control for signals of interpersonal threat in healthy anxiety-prone individuals.     Self-Disgust Is Associated With Loneliness, Mental Health Difficulties, and Eye-Gaze Avoidance in War Veterans With PTSD

    In the present study, we examined, for the first time, the association between self-disgust, loneliness, and mental health difficulties in war veterans diagnosed with PTSD. For this purpose, we used a mixed methods design, incorporating surveys and a novel eye-tracking paradigm, and compared the findings from the PTSD veteran group (n = 19) to those from a general population group (n = 22). Our results showed that the PTSD veteran group reported almost three times higher scores in self-disgust, and significantly higher scores in loneliness and mental health difficulties (anxiety and depression), compared to the general population. Furthermore, self-disgust mediated the association between loneliness and anxiety symptoms in both groups. The results from the eye-tracking paradigm further showed that veterans with PTSD displayed a self-avoidance gaze pattern, by looking significantly more toward pictures of faces of unknown others and away from their own face—a pattern that was not replicated in the general population group. Higher self-disgust scores were significantly associated with longer total gaze to the pictures of others (vs. the self). Our findings have implications for the role of self-disgust in the mental health of war veterans

    Are avian predators effective biological control agents for rodent pest management in agricultural systems?

    Worldwide rodent pests are of significant economic and health importance. Controlling rodent pests will, therefore, not only benefit food security but also human and animal health. While rodent pests are most often chemically controlled, there is increased interest in biological control through avian predation. A rich body of research has addressed the impact of avian predators on wild rodent populations, but little is known about the effectiveness of avian predators as biological control agents of rodent pests in agricultural systems. In this study, we systematically reviewed research that investigated different aspects of avian predation on rodent pest populations in order to increase our understanding of the impact and effectiveness of avian predation on rodent pests. Several avian predators (Tyto alba, Elanus axillaris Falco tinnunculus, F. cenchroides, Bubo bengalensis, Buteo rufinus) were commonly cited in the biological control of rodents; however, barn owls (T. alba) are the most cited species (86% of studies). We found some support that the use of avian predators produced positive, measurable effects where increased presence of avian predators tended to lower rodent pest numbers, resulting in lower crop damage. However, our review highlighted several shortcomings related to research on avian predation of rodent pests. First, research concerning rodent pest control through avian predation was limited (1.86 articles per year). Secondly, we found that studies lack statistical rigor to detect and measure change in rodent pest species abundance. Finally, the majority of studies were short term and therefore not able to evaluate long term sustainable rodent pest population suppression. We suggest that current shortcomings could be adequately addressed with control-treatment studies that quantitatively investigate the effects of avian predation on rodent pest populations and agricultural impact. Such research could help develop recommendations regarding the use of avian predators in rodent pest management

    Analogy making and the structure of implied volatility skew

    An analogy based option pricing model is put forward. If option prices are determined in accordance with the analogy model, and the Black Scholes model is used to back-out implied volatility, then the implied volatility skew arises, which flattens as time to expiry increases. The analogy based stochastic volatility and the analogy based jump diffusion models are also put forward. The analogy based stochastic volatility model generates the skew even when there is no correlation between the stock price and volatility processes, whereas, the analogy based jump diffusion model does not require asymmetric jumps for generating the skew

    The CogBIAS longitudinal study protocol: cognitive and genetic factors influencing psychological functioning in adolescence.

    BACKGROUND: Optimal psychological development is dependent upon a complex interplay between individual and situational factors. Investigating the development of these factors in adolescence will help to improve understanding of emotional vulnerability and resilience. The CogBIAS longitudinal study (CogBIAS-L-S) aims to combine cognitive and genetic approaches to investigate risk and protective factors associated with the development of mood and impulsivity-related outcomes in an adolescent sample. METHODS: CogBIAS-L-S is a three-wave longitudinal study of typically developing adolescents conducted over 4 years, with data collection at age 12, 14 and 16. At each wave participants will undergo multiple assessments including a range of selective cognitive processing tasks (e.g. attention bias, interpretation bias, memory bias) and psychological self-report measures (e.g. anxiety, depression, resilience). Saliva samples will also be collected at the baseline assessment for genetic analyses. Multilevel statistical analyses will be performed to investigate the developmental trajectory of cognitive biases on psychological functioning, as well as the influence of genetic moderation on these relationships. DISCUSSION: CogBIAS-L-S represents the first longitudinal study to assess multiple cognitive biases across adolescent development and the largest study of its kind to collect genetic data. It therefore provides a unique opportunity to understand how genes and the environment influence the development and maintenance of cognitive biases and provide insight into risk and protective factors that may be key targets for intervention.This work was supported by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007–2013)/ERC grant agreement no: [324176]

    Increased temporal sensitivity for threat: A Bayesian generalized linear mixed modeling approach.

    People overestimate the duration of threat-related facial expressions, and this effect increases with self-reported fearfulness (Tipples in Emotion, 8, 127-131, 2008, Emotion, 11, 74-80, 2011). One explanation (Cheng, Tipples, Narayanan, & Meck in Timing and Time Perception, 4, 99-122, 2016) for this effect is that emotion increases the rate at which temporal information accumulates. Here I tested whether increased overestimation for threat-related facial expressions in high fearfulness generalizes to pictures of threatening animals. A further goal was to illustrate the use of Bayesian generalized linear mixed modeling (GLMM) to gain more accurate estimates of temporal performance, including estimates of temporal sensitivity. Participants (N = 53) completed a temporal bisection task in which they judged the presentation duration for pictures of threatening animals (poised to attack) and nonthreatening animals. People overestimated the duration of threatening animals, and the effect increased with self-reported fearfulness. In support of increased accumulation of pacemaker ticks due to threat, temporal sensitivity was higher for threat than for nonthreat images. Analyses indicated that temporal sensitivity effects may have been absent in previous research because of the method used to calculate the index of temporal sensitivity. The benefits of using Bayesian GLMM are highlighted, and researchers are encouraged to use this method as the first option for analyzing temporal bisection data
