Tooth development standards for South Australia
The document attached has been archived with permission from the Australian Dental Association. An external link to the publisher’s copy is included. Background: Chronological age, as recorded by registration of birth date, is referred to throughout an individual's life. This information is relevant in medical and dental practice for evaluating developmental progress, for educational purposes, and in legal matters, particularly in the application of criminal law. The absence of birth date information raises particular concerns, and estimates of chronological age are often required. Standards of dental maturation may be used to estimate age, but they have been shown to be gender and population sensitive. Methods: The revised Demirjian' system of dental age estimation was applied to a sample of 615 South Australian children in order to assess its accuracy. Results: The results of our study have shown that the Demirjian system is of limited accuracy when used to estimate the age of South Australian children. Conclusions: Generation of new standard curves, specific to the Australian population, is indicated.CJ McKenna, H James, JA Taylor, GC Townsen
Vacancy ordering and electronic structure of gamma-Fe2O3 (maghemite): a theoretical investigation
The crystal structure of the iron oxide gamma-Fe2O3 is usually reported in
either the cubic system (space group P4332) with partial Fe vacancy disorder or
in the tetragonal system (space group P41212) with full site ordering and
c/a\approx 3. Using a supercell of the cubic structure, we obtain the spectrum
of energies of all the ordered configurations which contribute to the partially
disordered P4332 cubic structure. Our results show that the configuration with
space group P41212 is indeed much more stable than the others, and that this
stability arises from a favourable electrostatic contribution, as this
configuration exhibits the maximum possible homogeneity in the distribution of
iron cations and vacancies. Maghemite is therefore expected to be fully ordered
in equilibrium, and deviations from this behaviour should be associated with
metastable growth, extended anti-site defects and surface effects in the case
of small nanoparticles. The confirmation of the ordered tetragonal structure
allows us to investigate the electronic structure of the material using density
functional theory (DFT) calculations. The inclusion of a Hubbard (DFT+U)
correction allows the calculation of a band gap in good agreement with
experiment. The value of the gap is dependent on the electron spin, which is
the basis for the spin-filtering properties of maghemite.Comment: 19 pages, 2 tables, 5 figures. To appear in the Journal of Physics -

Transplantation of canine olfactory ensheathing cells producing chondroitinase ABC promotes chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan digestion and axonal sprouting following spinal cord injury
Olfactory ensheathing cell (OEC) transplantation is a promising strategy for treating spinal cord injury (SCI), as has been demonstrated in experimental SCI models and naturally occurring SCI in dogs. However, the presence of chondroitin sulphate proteoglycans within the extracellular matrix of the glial scar can inhibit efficient axonal repair and limit the therapeutic potential of OECs. Here we have used lentiviral vectors to genetically modify canine OECs to continuously deliver mammalian chondroitinase ABC at the lesion site in order to degrade the inhibitory chondroitin sulphate proteoglycans in a rodent model of spinal cord injury. We demonstrate that these chondroitinase producing canine OECs survived at 4 weeks following transplantation into the spinal cord lesion and effectively digested chondroitin sulphate proteoglycans at the site of injury. There was evidence of sprouting within the corticospinal tract rostral to the lesion and an increase in the number of corticospinal axons caudal to the lesion, suggestive of axonal regeneration. Our results indicate that delivery of the chondroitinase enzyme can be achieved with the genetically modified OECs to increase axon growth following SCI. The combination of these two promising approaches is a potential strategy for promoting neural regeneration following SCI in veterinary practice and human patients
Preventing Prostate Biopsy Complications: to Augment or to Swab?
Aims for Improvement The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic prophylaxis associated with the fewest infectious complications following prostate biopsy Determining the safest method allows the Jefferson Department of Urology to modify its biopsy protocol and improve the rate of post-biopsy complication
Future climate change and its impact on runoff generation from the debris-covered Inylchek glaciers, central Tian Shan, Kyrgyzstan
The heavily debris-covered Inylchek glaciers in the central Tian Shan are the largest glacier system in the Tarim catchment. It is assumed that almost 50% of the discharge of Tarim River are provided by glaciers. For this reason, climatic changes, and thus changes in glacier mass balance and glacier discharge are of high impact for the whole region. In this study, a conceptual hydrological model able to incorporate discharge from debris-covered glacier areas is presented. To simulate glacier melt and subsequent runoff in the past (1970/1971-1999/2000) and future (2070/2071-2099/2100), meteorological input data were generated based on ECHAM5/MPI-OM1 global climate model projections. The hydrological model HBV-LMU was calibrated by an automatic calibration algorithm using runoff and snow cover information as objective functions. Manual fine-tuning was performed to avoid unrealistic results for glacier mass balance. The simulations show that annual runoff sums will increase significantly under future climate conditions. A sensitivity analysis revealed that total runoff does not decrease until the glacier area is reduced by 43%. Ice melt is the major runoff source in the recent past, and its contribution will even increase in the coming decades. Seasonal changes reveal a trend towards enhanced melt in spring, but a change from a glacial-nival to a nival-pluvial runoff regime will not be reached until the end of this century.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Mapping of hormones and cortisol responses in patients after Lyme neuroborreliosis

Abstract

Background

Persistent symptoms after treatment for neuroborreliosis are common for reasons mainly unknown. These symptoms are often unspecific and could be caused by dysfunctions in endocrine systems, an issue that has not been previously addressed systematically. We therefore mapped hormone levels in patients with previous confirmed Lyme neuroborreliosis of different outcomes and compared them with a healthy control group.

Methods

Twenty patients of a retrospective cohort of patients treated for definite Lyme neuroborreliosis were recruited 2.3 to 3.7 years (median 2.7) after diagnosis, together with 23 healthy controls. Lyme neuroborreliosis patients were stratified into two groups according to a symptom/sign score. All participants underwent anthropometric and physiological investigation as well as an extensive biochemical endocrine investigation including a short high-dose adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation (Synacthen®) test. In addition to hormonal status, we also examined electrolytes, 25-hydroxy-vitamin D and interleukin-6.

Results

Eight patients (40%) had pronounced symptoms 2-3 years after treatment. This group had a higher cortisol response to synacthen as compared with both controls and the Lyme neuroborreliosis patients without remaining symptoms (p < 0.001 for both comparisons). No other significant differences in the various baseline biochemical parameters, anthropometric or physiological data could be detected across groups.

Conclusions

Apart from a positive association between the occurrence of long-lasting complaints after Lyme neuroborreliosis and cortisol response to synacthen, no corticotropic insufficiency or other serious hormonal dysfunction was found to be associated with remaining symptoms after treatment for Lyme neuroborreliosis.</p
