Hybrid Additive Manufacturing (HAM) is a production strategy enhancing the flexibility of the already versatile Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques. AM of Ti6Al4V, on the other hand, has been of great interest to numerous research works, thanks to the unique corrosion, biomedical and mechanical properties of the alloy. Hence, this research marks the first report on the HAM of Ti6Al4V by Transient Liquid Phase (TLP) bonding of an Electron Beam Powder Bed Fused (EB-PBF) sample to a conventional one. A copper interlayer was used for bonding, and the TLP process was performed at 890 degrees C and 970 degrees C for 60 min. Shear strength test was carried out and the results showed the highest shear strengths of 579.3 and 662.5 MPa for TLP bonding at 890 degrees C and 970 degrees C, respectively. By increasing the bonding temperature to 970 degrees C, no Cu-rich phases were observed in the microstructure, as opposed to the 890 degrees C samples, and a complete isothermal solidification without intermetallic phases was achieved. Moreover, the 970 degrees C TLP sample was featured with a much better microstructural integrity and homogeneity in both the base metals and the bonded zone. TLP bonding at 970 degrees C resulted in a more ductile fracture surface than that bonded at 890 degrees C. The strong differences between the two TLP bonds were primarily attributed to the faster diffusion rate of elements along the joint and base metal at higher temperatures. (C) 2022 The Author(s). Validating the Dosimetric Parameters of INTRABEAM Intraoperative Radiotherapy Machine

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: One of the methods for treating breast cancer is radiotherapy using low-kV X-rays in which a dedicated device called INTRABEAM is used along with a few spherical applicators for breast radiation. Due to the single-session nature of this treatment, evaluating the accuracy of the device used for treatment is essential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dosimetric parameters of the INTRABEAM system with spherical applicators and validate the reported results for clinical use in intraoperative radiotherapy for breast tumors. METHODS: In this study, dosimetric parameters including percentage depth dose curve (PDD), transfer function (TF) and anisotropy were determined by MCNPX Monte Carlo Simulation Tool and practical dosimetry was done by Gafchromic EBT2 film. The results were quantitatively compared with the results reported by manufacturer of the device (Carl Zeiss) to evaluate the accuracy of the reported data for this treatment system. FINDINGS: The mean difference when comparing PDD curves was 1.7% and the mean difference between the compared TF values was about 2%. The anisotropy values obtained by Monte Carlo Simulation and Gafchromic EBT2 film were also within the range recommended by the manufacturer. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, it can be concluded that the dosimetric parameters reported by the manufacturer for spherical applicators of the INTRABEAM system are valid for designing the treatment and radiotherapy for patients

Characterization of K-Complexes and Slow Wave Activity in a Neural Mass Model

    Get PDF
NREM sleep is characterized by two hallmarks, namely K-complexes (KCs) during sleep stage N2 and cortical slow oscillations (SOs) during sleep stage N3. While the underlying dynamics on the neuronal level is well known and can be easily measured, the resulting behavior on the macroscopic population level remains unclear. On the basis of an extended neural mass model of the cortex, we suggest a new interpretation of the mechanisms responsible for the generation of KCs and SOs. As the cortex transitions from wake to deep sleep, in our model it approaches an oscillatory regime via a Hopf bifurcation. Importantly, there is a canard phenomenon arising from a homoclinic bifurcation, whose orbit determines the shape of large amplitude SOs. A KC corresponds to a single excursion along the homoclinic orbit, while SOs are noise-driven oscillations around a stable focus. The model generates both time series and spectra that strikingly resemble real electroencephalogram data and points out possible differences between the different stages of natural sleep

open966siAcknowledgments This document was prepared by the DUNE collaboration using the resources of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), a U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, HEP User Facility. Fermilab is managed by Fermi Research Alliance, LLC (FRA), acting under Contract No. DE-AC02-07CH11359. The DUNE collaboration also acknowledges the international, national, and regional funding agencies supporting the institutions who have contributed to completing this Technical Design Report. The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and whether protons eventually decay-these mysteries at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early evolution of our universe, its current state, and its eventual fate. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions as it searches for leptonic charge-parity symmetry violation, stands ready to capture supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. The DUNE far detector technical design report (TDR) describes the DUNE physics program and the technical designs of the single- A nd dual-phase DUNE liquid argon TPC far detector modules. Volume III of this TDR describes how the activities required to design, construct, fabricate, install, and commission the DUNE far detector modules are organized and managed. This volume details the organizational structures that will carry out and/or oversee the planned far detector activities safely, successfully, on time, and on budget. It presents overviews of the facilities, supporting infrastructure, and detectors for context, and it outlines the project-related functions and methodologies used by the DUNE technical coordination organization, focusing on the areas of integration engineering, technical reviews, quality assurance and control, and safety oversight. Because of its more advanced stage of development, functional examples presented in this volume focus primarily on the single-phase (SP) detector module.openAbi B.; Acciarri R.; Acero M.A.; Adamov G.; Scintillation light detection in the 6-m drift-length ProtoDUNE Dual Phase liquid argon TPC

DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6  ×  6  ×  6 m 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties

Supernova neutrino burst detection with the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment

    Get PDF
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a 40-kton underground liquid argon time projection chamber experiment, will be sensitive to the electron-neutrino flavor component of the burst of neutrinos expected from the next Galactic core-collapse supernova. Such an observation will bring unique insight into the astrophysics of core collapse as well as into the properties of neutrinos. The general capabilities of DUNE for neutrino detection in the relevant few- to few-tens-of-MeV neutrino energy range will be described. As an example, DUNE's ability to constrain the νe spectral parameters of the neutrino burst will be considered
