    Atomic structures of TDP-43 LCD segments and insights into reversible or pathogenic aggregation.

    The normally soluble TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) is found aggregated both in reversible stress granules and in irreversible pathogenic amyloid. In TDP-43, the low-complexity domain (LCD) is believed to be involved in both types of aggregation. To uncover the structural origins of these two modes of β-sheet-rich aggregation, we have determined ten structures of segments of the LCD of human TDP-43. Six of these segments form steric zippers characteristic of the spines of pathogenic amyloid fibrils; four others form LARKS, the labile amyloid-like interactions characteristic of protein hydrogels and proteins found in membraneless organelles, including stress granules. Supporting a hypothetical pathway from reversible to irreversible amyloid aggregation, we found that familial ALS variants of TDP-43 convert LARKS to irreversible aggregates. Our structures suggest how TDP-43 adopts both reversible and irreversible β-sheet aggregates and the role of mutation in the possible transition of reversible to irreversible pathogenic aggregation

    Scattering of the Halo Nucleus Be 11 on Au 197 at Energies around the Coulomb Barrier

    Angular distributions of the elastic, inelastic, and breakup cross sections of the halo nucleus Be11 on Au197 were measured at energies below (Elab=31.9 MeV) and around (39.6 MeV) the Coulomb barrier. These three channels were unambiguously separated for the first time for reactions of Be11 on a high-Z target at low energies. The experiment was performed at TRIUMF (Vancouver, Canada). The differential cross sections were compared with three different calculations: semiclassical, inert-core continuum-coupled-channels and continuum-coupled-channels ones with including core deformation. These results show conclusively that the elastic and inelastic differential cross sections can only be accounted for if core-excited admixtures are taken into account. The cross sections for these channels strongly depend on the B(E1) distribution in Be11, and the reaction mechanism is sensitive to the entanglement of core and halo degrees of freedom in Be11

    Probing the low-lying level structure of 94Zr through β¯ decay

    223-227Low-lying states of 94Zr are populated following b- decay of 94Y, and the emitted g rays from 94Zr are detected using the 8p spectrometer composed of 20 Compton-suppressed HPGe detectors. High- statistics coincidence data have been used for the placement of very weak decay branches in the level scheme. Combining the results of level lifetimes from a previous experiment and the precisely measured branching ratio values of the weak decay branches from the present experiment, it is possible to extract the B(E2) values for all the possible decay branches from a given level. These values are helpful for proper identification of the collective and non-collective states of 94Zr. The experimental findings have been compared with predictions from shell-model calculations with a limited valence space; however, these calculations are inadequate in reproducing all of the measured spectroscopic quantities

    Investigation of the role of 10^{10}Li resonances in the halo structure of 11^{11}Li through the 11^{11}Li(p, d)10^{10}Li transfer reaction

    International audienceThe first measurement of the one-neutron transfer reaction 11Li(p,d)10Li performed using the IRIS facility at TRIUMF with a 5.7AMeV11Li beam interacting with a solid H2 target is reported. The 10Li residue was populated strongly as a resonance peak with energy Er=0.62 ±0.04MeV having a total width Γ\Gamma = 0.33 ±0.07MeV. The angular distribution of this resonance is characterized by neutron occupying the 1p1/2orbital. A DWBA analysis yields a spectroscopic factor of 0.67 ±0.12for p1/2 removal strength from the ground state of 11Li to the region of the peak

    The persistence of epiphyseal scars in the distal radius in adult individuals

    The use of radiographic imaging in the estimation of chronological age facilitates the analysis of structures not visible on gross morphological inspection. Following the completion of epiphyseal fusion, a thin radio-opaque band, the epiphyseal scar, may be observed at the locus of the former growth plate. The obliteration of this feature has previously been interpreted as the final stage of skeletal maturation and consequently has been included as a criterion in several methods of age estimation, particularly from the distal radius. Due to the recommendations relating to age estimation in living individuals, accurate assessment of age from the distal radius is of great importance in human identification; however, the validity of the interpretation of the obliteration of the epiphyseal scar as an age-related process has not been tested. A study was undertaken to assess the persistence of epiphyseal scars in adults between 20 and 50 years of age through the assessment of 616 radiographs of left and right distal radii from a cross-sectional population. This study found that 86 % of females and 78 % of males retained some remnant of the epiphyseal scar in the distal radius. The relationships between chronological age, biological sex and the persistence of the epiphyseal scar were not statistically significant. The findings of this study indicate that the epiphyseal scars may persist in adult individuals until at least 50 years of age. No maximum age should therefore be applied to the persistence of an epiphyseal scar in the distal radius

    Conversion electrons from high-statistics β-decay measurements with the 8π spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC

    The 8π spectrometer, located at TRIUMF-ISAC, was the world\u27s most powerful spectrometer dedicated to β-decay studies until its decommissioning in early 2014 for replacement with the GRIFFIN array. An integral part of the 8π spectrometer was the Pentagonal Array for Conversion Electron Spectroscopy (PACES) consisting of 5 Si(Li) detectors used for charged-particle detection. PACES enabled both γ - e- and e- - e- coincidence measurements, which were crucial for increasing the sensitivity for discrete e- lines in the presence of large backgrounds. Examples from a 124Cs decay experiment, where the data were vital for the expansion of the 124Csm decay scheme, are shown. With sufficient statistics, measurements of conversion coefficients can be used to extract the E0 components of Jπ → Jπ transitions for J ≠ 0, which is demonstrated for data obtained in 110In→110Cd decay. With knowledge of the shapes of the states involved, as obtained, for example, from the use of Kumar-Cline shape invariants, the mixing of the states can be extracted

    First Evidence of Axial Shape Asymmetry and Configuration Coexistence in 74^{74}Zn: Suggestion for a Northern Extension of the N=40N=40 Island of Inversion

    The excited states of N=44N=44 74^{74}Zn were investigated via γ\gamma-ray spectroscopy following 74^{74}Cu β\beta decay. By exploiting γ\gamma-γ\gamma angular correlation analysis, the 22+2_2^+, 31+3_1^+, 02+0_2^+ and 23+2_3^+ states in 74^{74}Zn were firmly established. The γ\gamma-ray branching and E2/M1E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions de-exciting the 22+2_2^+, 31+3_1^+ and 23+2_3^+ states were measured, allowing for the extraction of relative B(E2)B(E2) values. In particular, the 23+02+2_3^+ \to 0_2^+ and 23+41+2_3^+ \to 4_1^+ transitions were observed for the first time. The results show excellent agreement with new microscopic large-scale shell-model calculations, and are discussed in terms of underlying shapes, as well as the role of neutron excitations across the N=40N=40 gap. Enhanced axial shape asymmetry (triaxiality) is suggested to characterize 74^{74}Zn in its ground state. Furthermore, an excited K=0K=0 band with a significantly larger softness in its shape is identified. A shore of the N=40N=40 ``island of inversion'' appears to manifest above Z=26Z=26, previously thought as its northern limit in the chart of the nuclides
