    Impact of Sex Education in Kogi State, Nigeria

    The focus of this study was to investigate the impact of family sex education in secondary schools on students in Kogi State, Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was used for the study. A total of 1,960 secondary school students were drawn by stratified random sampling from 40 schools within Kogi State, Nigeria. Three research questions were generated for the study. Data collected using a researchers’ structured questionnaire were subjected to statistics of frequency counts and percentage. The results revealed that students have sexual problems, misuse of sex, high teenage pregnancies and abortion and inadequate information on sex. Among the recommendations made include the provision of adequate counseling and enlightenment programmes for students, teachers and parents on the dangers of sex misuse and abuse, and the implementation of the law against sex abuse of any form, and full enforcement of the child right act of Nigeria.     Use of beneficial bacteria and their secondary metabolites to control grapevine pathogen diseases

    Grapevine is one of the most important economic crops yielding berries, wine products as well as derivates. However, due to the large array of pathogens inducing diseases on this plant, considerable amounts of pesticides—with possible negative impact on the environment and health—have been used and are currently used in viticulture. To avoid negative impacts of such products and to ensure product quality, a substantial fraction of pesticides needs to be replaced in the near future. One solution can be related to the use of beneficial bacteria inhabiting the rhizo- and/or the endosphere of plants. These biocontrol bacteria and their secondary metabolites can reduce directly or indirectly pathogen diseases by affecting pathogen performance by antibiosis, competition for niches and nutrients, interference with pathogen signaling or by stimulation of host plant defenses. Due to the large demand for biocontrol of grapevine diseases, such biopesticides, their modes of actions and putative consequences of their uses need to be described. Moreover, the current knowledge on new strains from the rhizo- and endosphere and their metabolites that can be used on grapevine plants to counteract pathogen attack needs to be discussed. This is in particular with regard to the control of root rot, grey mould, trunk diseases, powdery and downy mildews, pierce’s disease, grapevine yellows as well as crown gall. Future prospects on specific beneficial microbes and their secondary metabolites that can be used as elicitors of plant defenses and/or as biocontrol agents with potential use in a more sustainable viticulture will be further discussed

    Global patient outcomes after elective surgery: prospective cohort study in 27 low-, middle- and high-income countries.

    BACKGROUND: As global initiatives increase patient access to surgical treatments, there remains a need to understand the adverse effects of surgery and define appropriate levels of perioperative care. METHODS: We designed a prospective international 7-day cohort study of outcomes following elective adult inpatient surgery in 27 countries. The primary outcome was in-hospital complications. Secondary outcomes were death following a complication (failure to rescue) and death in hospital. Process measures were admission to critical care immediately after surgery or to treat a complication and duration of hospital stay. A single definition of critical care was used for all countries. RESULTS: A total of 474 hospitals in 19 high-, 7 middle- and 1 low-income country were included in the primary analysis. Data included 44 814 patients with a median hospital stay of 4 (range 2-7) days. A total of 7508 patients (16.8%) developed one or more postoperative complication and 207 died (0.5%). The overall mortality among patients who developed complications was 2.8%. Mortality following complications ranged from 2.4% for pulmonary embolism to 43.9% for cardiac arrest. A total of 4360 (9.7%) patients were admitted to a critical care unit as routine immediately after surgery, of whom 2198 (50.4%) developed a complication, with 105 (2.4%) deaths. A total of 1233 patients (16.4%) were admitted to a critical care unit to treat complications, with 119 (9.7%) deaths. Despite lower baseline risk, outcomes were similar in low- and middle-income compared with high-income countries. CONCLUSIONS: Poor patient outcomes are common after inpatient surgery. Global initiatives to increase access to surgical treatments should also address the need for safe perioperative care. STUDY REGISTRATION: ISRCTN5181700

    Knowledge of malaria and practice of home management of malaria among mothers of under fives

    Background: Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease associated with high morbidity and mortality. It is the 3rd leading cause of death for children under five years worldwide. Home-based management of malaria may go a long way in reducing the attending morbidity and mortality associated with malaria in this group of subjects.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 66 mothers of under five children accessing services in under five clinic in a tertiary health institution to determine the knowledge of malaria and practice of Home Management of Malaria (HMM).Result: The respondents in the study were within the age range of 16 – 45 years with mean age of 25 ± 5 years. Majority (95.5%) of the mothers of under-fives were aware of malaria while only 34.8% had heard of HMM. Less than half (42.4%) of the respondent had practiced management of malaria at home within 24 hours of onset of fever and only 25% used the recommended drug. Age and level of education of the mothers of under fives were significantly associated with the practice of HMM (P < 0.05).Conclusion: The study demonstrates the low level of practice of HMM among mothers of under-fives.Keywords: Knowledge, Practice, Home Management of Malaria, Under-five

    Vibrational spectroscopic monitoring and biochemical analysis of pericellular matrix formation and maturation in a 3-dimensional chondrocyte culture model.

    Isolated and monolayer expanded chondrocytes are not the ideal cell form to produce a cartilage matrix. In articular cartilage, each chondrocyte is surrounded by a 2-4 μm thick collagen VI-rich pericellular matrix (PCM) forming a chondron. Freshly extracted chondrons form a more cartilage-like extracellular matrix (ECM) than chondrocytes and their surrounding PCM is thought to maintain the chondrocyte phenotype. To regenerate articular cartilage, preserving and/or regenerating a functional PCM is essential. In this study, a highly biomimicking hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel was used as a 3-dimensional system to culture freshly isolated bovine chondrons (with an intact PCM) and chondrocytes (without a PCM) for up to 21 days. We assessed the HA hydrogel's capacity to maintain and potentially re-generate PCM formation by both biochemical and immunological analyses of the key components of the PCM. For the first time, synchrotron based Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) microspectroscopy was utilised to reveal the dynamic process of PCM re-generation. At day 1, highly specific collagen VI staining was visible within chondron containing HA hydrogels. In contrast, collagen VI was absent at day 1 but punctate, focal staining increased during the culture period of chondrocyte containing HA hydrogels. Chondron containing HA hydrogels produced more collagen II and GAGs than the chondrocyte containing HA hydrogels. Principal component analysis (PCA) of spectra in fingerprint regions of the chondrocyte-containing constructs at day 7, 14 and 21 culturing showed clear spectral differences. The clusters of day 14 and day 21 samples were closer to the chondron samples, while the day 7 samples were closer to chondrocytes. PCA scores in the lipid region revealed no major differences between chondrocyte and chondron samples, but showed that the cultured chondrocyte samples at day 7, day 14 and day 21 clustered together. These data would indicate that SR-FTIR microspectroscopy can help to better understand the PCM formation and maturation in tissue engineered models, which involves subtle changes in collagen and aggrecan
