Correlation Widths in Quantum--Chaotic Scattering
An important parameter to characterize the scattering matrix S for
quantum-chaotic scattering is the width Gamma_{corr} of the S-matrix
autocorrelation function. We show that the "Weisskopf estimate" d/(2pi) sum_c
T_c (where d is the mean resonance spacing, T_c with 0 <= T_c <= 1 the
"transmission coefficient" in channel c and where the sum runs over all
channels) provides a very good approximation to Gamma_{corr} even when the
number of channels is small. That same conclusion applies also to the
cross-section correlation function
ECORD geophysical and geotechnical hazard site survey offshore Yucatan, Mexico : cruise 2013/4_ECORD
This report provides information on the University of Texas, Institute for Geophysics (UTIG) led
ECORD (European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling) geophysical and geotechnical
hazard site survey offshore Yucatan aboard the R/V Justo Sierra which took place from the 16th
April to the 23rd April 2013 over a study area within the Chixculub impact crater. The cruise has
been carried out under contract for ECORD comprising the acquisition of geophysical data
(surface tow boomer, side scan sonar, multibeam echosounder, magnetometer and CHIRP data)
and geotechnical data (cone penetrometer tests (CPT)), ahead of scheduled ECORD led drilling
of the Chixculub impact crater. The survey was undertaken in joint collaboration between UTIG
and Universidad Nacional AutonĂłma de MĂ©xico (UNAM). Seafloor Geotec, LLC, was
commissioned to carry out CPTs at selected sites within the survey area
Situationally edited empathy: an effect of socio-economic structure on individual choice
Criminological theory still operates with deficient models of the offender as agent, and of social influences on the agentâs decision-making process. This paper takes one âemotionâ, empathy, which is theoretically of considerable importance in influencing the choices made by agents; particularly those involving criminal or otherwise harmful action. Using a framework not of rational action, but of ârationalised actionâ, the paper considers some of the effects on individual psychology of social, economic, political and cultural structure. It is suggested that the climate-setting effects of these structures promote normative definitions of social situations which allow unempathic, harmful action to be rationalised through the situational editing of empathy. The âcrime is normalâ argument can therefore be extended to include the recognition that the uncompassionate state of mind of the criminal actor is a reflection of the self-interested values which govern non-criminal action in wider society
Self-formed quantum wires and dots in GaAsP-GaAsP core-shell nanowires
Quantum structures designed using nanowires as a basis are excellent candidates to achieve novel design architectures. Here, triplets of quantum wires (QWRs) that form at the coreâshell interface of GaAsPâGaAsP nanowires are reported. Their formation, on only three of the six vertices of the hexagonal nanowire, is governed by the three-fold symmetry of the cubic crystal on the (111) plane. In twinned nanowires, the QWRs are segmented, to alternating vertices, forming quantum dots (QDs). Simulations confirm the possibility of QWR and QD-like behavior from the respective regions. Optical measurements confirm the presence of two different types of quantum emitters in the twinned individual nanowires. The possibility to control the relative formation of QWRs or QDs, and resulting emission wavelengths of the QDs, by controlling the twinning of the nanowire core, opens up new possibilities for designing nanowire devices
Fluctuating brane in a dilatonic bulk
We consider a cosmological brane moving in a static five-dimensional bulk
spacetime endowed with a scalar field whose potential is exponential. After
studying various cosmological behaviours for the homogeneous background, we
investigate the fluctuations of the brane that leave spacetime unaffected. A
single mode embodies these fluctuations and obeys a wave equation which we

Semiclassical Solution of the Quantum Hydrodynamic Equation for Trapped Bose-condensed Gas in the l=0 Case
In this paper the quantum hydrodynamic equation describing the collective,
low energy excitations of a dilute atomic Bose gas in a given trapping
potential is investigated with the JWKB semiclassical method. In the case of
spherically symmetric harmonic confining potential a good agreement is shown
between the semiclassical and the exact energy eigenvalues as well as wave
functions. It is also demonstrated that for larger quantum numbers the
calculation of the semiclassical wave function is numerically more stable than
the exact polynomial with large alternating coefficients.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Energy averages and fluctuations in the decay out of superdeformed bands
We derive analytic formulae for the energy average (including the energy
average of the fluctuation contribution) and variance of the intraband decay
intensity of a superdeformed band. Our results may be expressed in terms of

Generalised Israel Junction Conditions for a Gauss-Bonnet Brane World
In spacetimes of dimension greater than four it is natural to consider higher
order (in R) corrections to the Einstein equations. In this letter generalized
Israel junction conditions for a membrane in such a theory are derived. This is
achieved by generalising the Gibbons-Hawking boundary term. The junction
conditions are applied to simple brane world models, and are compared to the

Simultaneous cognate epitope recognition by bovine CD4 and CD8 T cells is essential for primary expansion of antigen-specific cytotoxic T-cells following ex vivo stimulation with a candidate Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis peptide vaccine
Studies in cattle show CD8 cytotoxic T cells (CTL), with the ability to kill intracellular bacteria, develop following stimulation of monocyte-depleted peripheral blood mononuclear cells (mdPBMC) with antigen-presenting cells (APC, i.e. conventional dendritic cells [cDC] and monocyte-derived DC [MoDC]) pulsed with MMP, a membrane protein from Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) encoded byMAP2121c. CTL activity was diminished if CD4 T cells were depleted from mdPBMC before antigen (Ag) presentation by APC, suggesting simultaneous cognate recognition of MMP epitopes presented by MHC I and MHC II molecules to CD4 and CD8 T cells is essential for development of CTL activity. To explore this possibility, studies were conducted with mdPBMC cultures in the presence of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific for MHC class I and MHC class II molecules. The CTL response of mdPBMC to MMP-pulsed APC was completely blocked in the presence of mAbs to both MHC I and II molecules and also blocked in the presence of mAbs to either MHC I or MHC II alone. The results demonstrate simultaneous cognate recognition of Ag by CD4 and CD8 T cells is essential for delivery of CD4 T cell help to CD8 T cells to elicit development of CTL
Cosmic ray tests of the D0 preshower detector
The D0 preshower detector consists of scintillator strips with embedded
wavelength-shifting fibers, and a readout using Visible Light Photon Counters.
The response to minimum ionizing particles has been tested with cosmic ray
muons. We report results on the gain calibration and light-yield distributions.
The spatial resolution is investigated taking into account the light sharing
between strips, the effects of multiple scattering and various systematic
uncertainties. The detection efficiency and noise contamination are also
