Cytolytic T lymphocyte recognition of the murine cytomegalovirus nonstructural immediate-early protein pp89 expressed by recombinant vaccinia virus

The murine immediate-early (IE) protein pp89 is a nonstructural virus- encoded phosphoprotein residing in the nucleus of infected cells, where it acts as transcriptional activator. Frequency analysis has shown that in BALB/c mice the majority of virus-specific CTL recognize IE antigens. The present study was performed to assess whether pp89 causes membrane antigen expression detected by IE-specific CTL. Site-directed mutagenesis has been used to delete the introns from gene ieI, encoding pp89, for subsequent integration of the continuous coding sequence into the vaccinia virus genome. After infection with the vaccinia recombinant, the authentic pp89 was expressed in cells that became susceptible to lysis by an IE-specific CTL clone. Priming of mice with the vaccinia recombinant sensitized polyclonal CTL that recognized MCMV- infected cells and transfected cells expressing pp89. Thus, a herpesviral IE polypeptide with essential function in viral transcriptional regulation can also serve as a dominant antigen for the specific CTL response of the host

Topology of energy surfaces and existence of transversal Poincar\'e sections

Two questions on the topology of compact energy surfaces of natural two degrees of freedom Hamiltonian systems in a magnetic field are discussed. We show that the topology of this 3-manifold (if it is not a unit tangent bundle) is uniquely determined by the Euler characteristic of the accessible region in configuration space. In this class of 3-manifolds for most cases there does not exist a transverse and complete Poincar\'e section. We show that there are topological obstacles for its existence such that only in the cases of S1×S2S^1\times S^2 and T3T^3 such a Poincar\'e section can exist.Comment: 10 pages, LaTe

Connections in Information Literacy Responses: IL in the Undergraduate University Experience

    Get PDF
This study was conducted at a four-year state university to compare differences in information literacy knowledge between students at the first-year, sophomore, junior, and senior levels. The survey included questions about reading habits, library usage, and information literacy knowledge, and was shared with 10,967 students with a 15.7% response rate. Analysis of the responses found reduced participation from sophomores, a positive relationship between required course use of the library and actual use of the library, a positive relationship between library exposure and accuracy of responses, and other academic connections to information skills

During the 1930’s and 1940’s, the Brazilian publishing industry experienced many crisis and changes that, surprisingly as it may be, contributed to the development of the translation practice in Brazil, making of these decades the Golden Age of translation. This research project is part of a major project, “Translation and literary system – the history of translation in Brazil: translation of canons and the writers/translators”, and aimed to investigate this period of time and its importance to the Brazilian translation history. It also studied the role of the Editora José Olympio in this context, regarding the translations of literary classics by Brazilian writers. After that, we analyzed the translations of two of Jane Austen’s titles that have been published by the Editora José Olympio in the Fogos Cruzados Collection, Pride and Prejudice, translated by Lúcio Cardoso, 1941, and Mansfield Park, translated by Rachel de Queiroz, 1942. We conducted a comparative study between these titles and their most recent translations: Pride and Prejudice, translated by Alexandre Barbosa de Souza (Penguin Companhia, 2011), and Mansfield Park, translated by Mariana Menezes Neumann (BestBolso, 2011). By doing this, we aimed to analyze the way these texts were presented to public, regarding its aesthetics and paratexts

Charged rho meson production in neutrino-induced reactions at E_nu = 10 GeV

The neutrinoproduction of charged ρ\rho mesons on nuclei and nucleons is investigated for the first time at moderate energies ( \approx 10 GeV), using the date obtained with SKAT bubble chamber. No strong nuclear effects are observed in ρ+\rho^+ and ρ\rho^- production. The fractions of charged and neutral pions originating from ρ\rho decays are obtained and compared with higher energy data. From analysis of the obtained and available data on ρ+\rho^+ and K+K^{*+}(892) neutrinoproduction, the strangeness suppression factor in the quark string fragmentation is extracted: λs=0.18±0.03\lambda_s = 0.18\pm0.03. Estimations are obtained for cross sections of quasiexclusive single ρ+\rho^+ and coherent ρ+\rho^+ neutrinoproduction on nuclei. The estimated coherent cross section σρ+coh\sigma_{\rho^+}^{coh} = (0.29±0.16)1038\pm0.16)\cdot 10^{-38} cm2^2 is compatible with theoretical predictions.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
