    Dissipation in Poynting-flux Dominated Flows: the Sigma-Problem of the Crab Pulsar Wind

    Flows in which energy is transported predominantly as Poynting flux are thought to occur in pulsars, gamma-ray bursts and relativistic jets from compact objects. The fluctuating component of the magnetic field in such a flow can in principle be dissipated by magnetic reconnection, and used to accelerate the flow. We investigate how rapidly this transition can take place, by implementing into a global MHD model, that uses a thermodynamic description of the plasma, explicit, physically motivated prescriptions for the dissipation rate: a lower limit on this rate is given by limiting the maximum drift speed of the current carriers to that of light, an upper limit follows from demanding that the dissipation zone expand only subsonically in the comoving frame and a further prescription is obtained by assuming that the expansion speed is limited by the growth rate of the relativistic tearing mode. In each case, solutions are presented which give the Lorentz factor of a spherical wind containing a transverse, oscillating magnetic field component as a function of radius. In the case of the Crab pulsar, we find that the Poynting flux can be dissipated before the wind reaches the inner edge of the Nebula if the pulsar emits electron positron pairs at a rate >1.E40 per second, thus providing a possible solution to the sigma-problem.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Black Hole Cross Section at the Large Hadron Collider

    Black hole production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was first discussed in 1999. Since then, much work has been performed in predicting the black hole cross section. In light of the start up of the LHC, it is now timely to review the state of these calculations. We review the uncertainties in estimating the black hole cross section in higher dimensions. One would like to make this estimate as precise as possible since the predicted values, or lower limits, obtain for the fundamental Planck scale and number of extra dimensions from experiments will depend directly on the accuracy of the cross section.     Current fluctuations in stochastic systems with long-range memory

    We propose a method to calculate the large deviations of current fluctuations in a class of stochastic particle systems with history-dependent rates. Long-range temporal correlations are seen to alter the speed of the large deviation function in analogy with long-range spatial correlations in equilibrium systems.     State business: gender, sex and marriage in Tajikistan

    This article examines the relation of the state to masculinity and sexuality by way of an exploration of the sexual problems of a young man and his wife in Tajikistan at the end of the Soviet era. It suggests that the regime’s inattention to this kind of issue was bound up with the importance to the state of projecting appropriate versions of masculinity. It further posits the idea that the continued refusal of the independent Tajik state to offer appropriate treatments for sexual dysfunction is consistent with the image of modernity President Rahmon wishes to present to the world. The article shows that as masculinity discursively occupies the superior gender position, with men expected to dominate, the state is itself impotent to respond when they are, in fact, unable to do so in sexual practice. However, the myth of male dominance persists to the point that it may prevent women from seeing beyond their subordination and finding mutually beneficial solutions in their familial and sexual relationships

    Spatial evolution of short pulses under coherent population trapping

    Spatial and temporal evolution is studied of two powerful short laser pulses having different wavelengths and interacting with a dense three-level Lambda-type optical medium under coherent population trapping. A general case of unequal oscillator strengths of the transitions is considered. Durations of the probe pulse and the coupling pulse T1,2T_{1,2} (T2>T1T_2>T_1) are assumed to be shorter than any of the relevant atomic relaxation times. We propose analytical and numerical solutions of a self-consistent set of coupled Schr\"{o}dinger equations and reduced wave equations in the adiabatic limit with the account of the first non-adiabatic correction. The adiabaticity criterion is also discussed with the account of the pulse propagation. The dynamics of propagation is found to be strongly dependent on the ratio of the transition oscillator strengths. It is shown that envelopes of the pulses slightly change throughout the medium length at the initial stage of propagation. This distance can be large compared to the one-photon resonant absorption length. Eventually, the probe pulse is completely reemitted into the coupling pulse during propagation. The effect of localization of the atomic coherence has been observed similar to the one predicted by Fleischhauer and Lukin (PRL, {\bf 84}, 5094 (2000).Comment: 16 pages revtex style, 7 EPS figures, accepted to Physical Review

    Gravitation: Global Formulation and Quantum Effects

    A nonintegrable phase-factor global approach to gravitation is developed by using the similarity of teleparallel gravity with electromagnetism. The phase shifts of both the COW and the gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effects are obtained. It is then shown, by considering a simple slit experiment, that in the classical limit the global approach yields the same result as the gravitational Lorentz force equation of teleparallel gravity. It represents, therefore, the quantum mechanical version of the classical description provided by the gravitational Lorentz force equation. As teleparallel gravity can be formulated independently of the equivalence principle, it will consequently require no generalization of this principle at the quantum level.Comment: Latex (IOP style), 14 pages, 3 figures.     Slow group velocity and Cherenkov radiation

    We theoretically study the effect of ultraslow group velocities on the emission of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation in a coherently driven medium. We show that in this case the aperture of the group cone on which the intensity of the radiation peaks is much smaller than that of the usual wave cone associated with the Cherenkov coherence condition. We show that such a singular behaviour may be observed in a coherently driven ultracold atomic gas.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
