Leading interactions in the β\beta-SrV6O15Sr V_6 O_{15} compound

The present study shows that the electronic structure of the β\beta-AV_6O_15AV\_6O\_{15} family of compounds (A=Sr,Ca,Na...A = Sr, Ca, Na ...) is based on weakly interacting two-leg ladders, in contrast with the zig-zag chain model one could expect from their crystal structure. Spin dimer analysis, based on extended H\"{u}ckel tight-binding calculations, was performed to determine the structure of the dominant transfer and magnetic interactions in the room temperature β\beta-SrV_6O_15SrV\_6O\_{15} phase. Two different two-legs ladders, associated with different charge/spin orders are proposed to describe these one-dimensional β\beta-type systems. The antiferromagnetic ladders are packed in an 'IPN' geometry and coupled to each other through weak antiferromagnetic interactions. This arrangement of the dominant interactions explains the otherwise surprising similarities of the optical conductivity and Raman spectra for the one-dimensional β\beta-type phases and the two-dimensional α\alpha-type ones such as the well-known α\alpha^\prime-NaV_2O_5NaV\_2O\_5 system

On central tendency and dispersion measures for intervals and hypercubes

The uncertainty or the variability of the data may be treated by considering, rather than a single value for each data, the interval of values in which it may fall. This paper studies the derivation of basic description statistics for interval-valued datasets. We propose a geometrical approach in the determination of summary statistics (central tendency and dispersion measures) for interval-valued variables

Site-Directed Mutagenesis of the Cysteine Ligands to the [4Fe−4S] Cluster of Escherichia coli MutY †

International audienceThe Escherichia coli DNA repair enzyme MutY plays an important role in the recognition and repair of 7,8-dihydro-8-oxo-2′-deoxyguanosine:2′-deoxyadenosine (OG:A) mismatches in DNA [Michaels et al. (1992) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 89, 7022-7025]. MutY prevents DNA mutations resulting from the misincorporation of A opposite OG by using N-glycosylase activity to remove the adenine base. An interesting feature of MutY is that it contains a [4Fe-4S] 2+ cluster that has been shown to play an important role in substrate recognition [Porello, S. L., Cannon, M. J., David, S. S. (1998) Biochemistry 37, 6465-6475]. Herein, we have used site-directed mutagenesis to individually replace the cysteine ligands to the [4Fe-4S] 2+ cluster of E. coli MutY with serine, histidine, and alanine. The extent to which the various mutations reduce the levels of protein overexpression suggests that coordination of the [4Fe-4S] 2+ cluster provides stability to MutY in vivo. The ability of the mutated enzymes to bind to a substrate analogue DNA duplex and their in vivo activity were evaluated. Remarkably, the effects are both substitution and position dependent. For example, replacement of cysteine 199 with histidine provides a mutated enzyme that is expressed at high levels and exhibits DNA binding and in vivo activity similar to the WT enzyme. These results suggest that histidine coordination to the iron-sulfur cluster may be accommodated at this position in MutY. In contrast, replacement of cysteine 192 with histidine results in less efficient DNA binding and in vivo activity compared to the WT enzyme without affecting levels of overexpression. The results from the site-directed mutagenesis suggest that the structural properties of the iron-sulfur cluster coordination domain are important for both substrate DNA recognition and the in vivo activity of MutY

Atomic states in optical traps near a planar surface

In this work we discuss the atomic states in a vertical optical lattice in proximity of a surface. We study the modifications to the ordinary Wannier-Stark states in presence of a surface and we characterize the energy shifts produced by the Casimir-Polder interaction between atom and mirror. In this context, we introduce an effective model describing the finite size of the atom in order to regularize the energy corrections. In addition, the modifications to the energy levels due to a hypothetical non-Newtonian gravitational potential as well as their experimental observability are investigated.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

Studies on the production of underwater sound by North Atlantic coastal fishes

    Get PDF
Previous studies suggest that at least 42 families of Pacific Ocean fishes are potential sources of underwater sound. The present investigation has undertaken to ascertain experimentally which North Atlantic coastal species fit into that category and what stimuli are involved in sound production among fishes. Apparatus, test and analysis procedures are described...

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth 119 (2014): 7389–7403, doi:10.1002/2014JB011223.High-resolution, near-bottom vector magnetic data were collected by remotely operated vehicle Jason over the Raven hydrothermal vent field (47°57.3′N 129°5.75′W) located north of Main Endeavour vent field on the Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The survey was part of a comprehensive heat flow study of the Raven site using innovative thermal blanket technology to map the heat flux and crustal fluid pathways around a solitary hydrothermal vent field. Raven hydrothermal activity is presently located along the western axial valley wall, while additional inactive hydrothermal deposits are found to the NW on the upper rift valley wall. Magnetic inversion results show discrete areas of reduced magnetization associated with both active and inactive hydrothermal vent deposits that also show high conductive heat flow. Higher spatial variability in the heat flow patterns compared to the magnetization is consistent with the heat flow reflecting the currently active but ephemeral thermal environment of fluid flow, while crustal magnetization is representative of the static time-averaged effect of hydrothermal alteration. A general NW to SE trend in reduced magnetization across the Raven area correlates closely with the distribution of hydrothermal deposits and heat flux patterns and suggests that the fluid circulation system at depth is likely controlled by local crustal structure and magma chamber geometry. Magnetic gradient tensor components computed from vector magnetic data improve the resolution of the magnetic anomaly source and indicate that the hydrothermally altered zone directly beneath the Raven site is approximately 15 × 106 m3 in volume. This work was funded by the National Science Foundation under grant OCE-1037840 to Maurice Tivey and grant OCE-1037870 to H. Calculation of some determinants using the s-shifted factorial

Several determinants with gamma functions as elements are evaluated. This kind of determinants are encountered in the computation of the probability density of the determinant of random matrices. The s-shifted factorial is defined as a generalization for non-negative integers of the power function, the rising factorial (or Pochammer's symbol) and the falling factorial. It is a special case of polynomial sequence of the binomial type studied in combinatorics theory. In terms of the gamma function, an extension is defined for negative integers and even complex values. Properties, mainly composition laws and binomial formulae, are given. They are used to evaluate families of generalized Vandermonde determinants with s-shifted factorials as elements, instead of power functions.Comment: 25 pages; added section 5 for some examples of application
