On the Dynamic Stability of Cool Supergiant Atmospheres
We have developed a new formalism to compute the thermodynamic coefficient
Gamma1 in the theory of stellar and atmospheric stability. We generalize the
classical derivation of the first adiabatic index, which is based on the
assumption of thermal ionization and equilibrium between gas and radiation
temperature, towards an expression which incorporates photo-ionization due to
radiation with a temperature T_rad different from the local kinetic gas
temperature.Our formalism considers the important non-LTE conditions in the
extended atmospheres of supergiant stars. An application to the Kurucz grid of
cool supergiant atmospheres demonstrates that models with T_rad =~ T_eff
between 6500 K and 7500 K become most unstable against dynamic perturbations,
according to Ledoux' stability integral . This results from Gamma1 and
acquiring very low values, below 4/3, throughout the entire stellar
atmosphere, which causes very high gas compression ratios around these
effective temperatures. Based on detailed NLTE-calculations, we discuss
atmospheric instability of pulsating massive yellow supergiants, like the
hypergiant rho Cas (Ia+), which exist in the extension of the Cepheid

Near and mid-IR sub-arcsecond structure of the dusty symbiotic star R Aqr
The results of a high-resolution interferometric campaign targeting the
symbiotic long-period variable (LPV) R~Aqr are reported. With both
near-infrared measurements on baselines out to 10m and mid-infrared data
extending to 32m, we have been able to measure the characteristic sizes of
regions from the photosphere of the LPV and its extended molecular atmosphere,
out to the cooler circumstellar dust shell. The near-infrared data were taken
using aperture masking interferometry on the Keck-I telescope and show R~Aqr to
be partially resolved for wavelengths out to 2.2 microns but with a marked
enlargement, possibly due to molecular opacity, at 3.1 microns. Mid-infrared
interferometric measurements were obtained with the U.C. Berkeley Infrared
Spatial Interferometer (ISI) operating at 11.15 microns from 1992 to 1999.
Although this dataset is somewhat heterogeneous with incomplete coverage of the
Fourier plane and sampling of the pulsation cycle, clear changes in the
mid-infrared brightness distribution were observed, both as a function of
position angle on the sky and as a function of pulsation phase. Spherically
symmetric radiative transfer calculations of uniform-outflow dust shell models
produce brightness distributions and spectra which partially explain the data,
however limitations to this approximation are noted. Evidence for significant
deviation from circular symmetry was found in the mid-infrared and more
tentatively at 3.08 microns in the near-infrared, however no clear detection of

Seismic constraints on the radial dependence of the internal rotation profiles of six Kepler subgiants and young red giants
Context : We still do not know which mechanisms are responsible for the
transport of angular momentum inside stars. The recent detection of mixed modes
that contain the signature of rotation in the spectra of Kepler subgiants and
red giants gives us the opportunity to make progress on this issue.
Aims: Our aim is to probe the radial dependance of the rotation profiles for
a sample of Kepler targets. For this purpose, subgiants and early red giants
are particularly interesting targets because their rotational splittings are
more sensitive to the rotation outside the deeper core than is the case for
their more evolved counterparts.
Methods: We first extract the rotational splittings and frequencies of the
modes for six young Kepler red giants. We then perform a seismic modeling of
these stars using the evolutionary codes CESAM2k and ASTEC. By using the
observed splittings and the rotational kernels of the optimal models, we
perform inversions of the internal rotation profiles of the six stars.
Results: We obtain estimates of the mean rotation rate in the core and in the
convective envelope of these stars. We show that the rotation contrast between
the core and the envelope increases during the subgiant branch. Our results
also suggest that the core of subgiants spins up with time, contrary to the RGB
stars whose core has been shown to spin down. For two of the stars, we show
that a discontinuous rotation profile with a deep discontinuity reproduces the
observed splittings significantly better than a smooth rotation profile.
Interestingly, the depths that are found most probable for the discontinuities
roughly coincide with the location of the H-burning shell, which separates the
layers that contract from those that expand. These results will bring
observational constraints to the scenarios of angular momentum transport in

Atmospheric parameters of 82 red giants in the Kepler field
Context: Accurate fundamental parameters of stars are essential for the
asteroseismic analysis of data from the NASA Kepler mission. Aims: We aim at
determining accurate atmospheric parameters and the abundance pattern for a
sample of 82 red giants that are targets for the Kepler mission. Methods: We
have used high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra from three different
spectrographs. We used the iterative spectral synthesis method VWA to derive
the fundamental parameters from carefully selected high-quality iron lines.
After determination of the fundamental parameters, abundances of 13 elements
were measured using equivalent widths of the spectral lines. Results: We
identify discrepancies in log g and [Fe/H], compared to the parameters based on
photometric indices in the Kepler Input Catalogue (larger than 2.0 dex for log
g and [Fe/H] for individual stars). The Teff found from spectroscopy and
photometry shows good agreement within the uncertainties. We find good
agreement between the spectroscopic log g and the log g derived from
asteroseismology. Also, we see indications of a potential metallicity effect on
the stellar oscillations. Conclusions: We have determined the fundamental
parameters and element abundances of 82 red giants. The large discrepancies
between the spectroscopic log g and [Fe/H] and values in the Kepler Input
Catalogue emphasize the need for further detailed spectroscopic follow-up of
the Kepler targets in order to produce reliable results from the asteroseismic

Technologies and their inherent design choices create normative structures that affect governance. This chapter aims to illustrate how blockchain technology in particular introduces new norms into a legal framework. We first analyze the different forms of governance by distinguishing between old and new governance. With a view to code that functions as legal norms, Blockchain technology is particularly suited to create governance structures and mechanisms. However, one needs to be aware of the norms that are implicitly introduced into the legal system by a specific blockchain technology. We look at the blockchain technology that underlies cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. This blockchain introduces a decentralized, transparent, cryptographically locked and thus immutable shared ledger. In summary, these design choices have normative powers over the user and over user interaction. If this is indeed the case, then regulators have to actively assess newly introduced digital ledger technology and other technologies for their effect on the normative and legal system.</p
Conceptualizing pathways linking women's empowerment and prematurity in developing countries.
BackgroundGlobally, prematurity is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5. Many efforts have focused on clinical approaches to improve the survival of premature babies. There is a need, however, to explore psychosocial, sociocultural, economic, and other factors as potential mechanisms to reduce the burden of prematurity. Women's empowerment may be a catalyst for moving the needle in this direction. The goal of this paper is to examine links between women's empowerment and prematurity in developing settings. We propose a conceptual model that shows pathways by which women's empowerment can affect prematurity and review and summarize the literature supporting the relationships we posit. We also suggest future directions for research on women's empowerment and prematurity.MethodsThe key words we used for empowerment in the search were "empowerment," "women's status," "autonomy," and "decision-making," and for prematurity we used "preterm," "premature," and "prematurity." We did not use date, language, and regional restrictions. The search was done in PubMed, Population Information Online (POPLINE), and Web of Science. We selected intervening factors-factors that could potentially mediate the relationship between empowerment and prematurity-based on reviews of the risk factors and interventions to address prematurity and the determinants of those factors.ResultsThere is limited evidence supporting a direct link between women's empowerment and prematurity. However, there is evidence linking several dimensions of empowerment to factors known to be associated with prematurity and outcomes for premature babies. Our review of the literature shows that women's empowerment may reduce prematurity by (1) preventing early marriage and promoting family planning, which will delay age at first pregnancy and increase interpregnancy intervals; (2) improving women's nutritional status; (3) reducing domestic violence and other stressors to improve psychological health; and (4) improving access to and receipt of recommended health services during pregnancy and delivery to help prevent prematurity and improve survival of premature babies.ConclusionsWomen's empowerment is an important distal factor that affects prematurity through several intervening factors. Improving women's empowerment will help prevent prematurity and improve survival of preterm babies. Research to empirically show the links between women's empowerment and prematurity is however needed
Gaia Data Release 3: G_RVS photometry from the RVS spectra
Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) contains the first release of magnitudes estimated
from the integration of Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) spectra for a sample
of about 32.2 million stars brighter than G_RVS~14 mag (or G~15 mag). In this
paper, we describe the data used and the approach adopted to derive and
validate the G_RVS magnitudes published in DR3. We also provide estimates of
the G_RVS passband and associated G_RVS zero-point. We derived G_RVS photometry
from the integration of RVS spectra over the wavelength range from 846 to 870
nm. We processed these spectra following a procedure similar to that used for
DR2, but incorporating several improvements that allow a better estimation of
G_RVS. These improvements pertain to the stray-light background estimation, the
line spread function calibration, and the detection of spectra contaminated by
nearby relatively bright sources. We calibrated the G_RVS zero-point every 30
hours based on the reference magnitudes of constant stars from the Hipparcos
catalogue, and used them to transform the integrated flux of the cleaned and
calibrated spectra into epoch magnitudes. The G_RVS magnitude of a star
published in DR3 is the median of the epoch magnitudes for that star. We
estimated the G_RVS passband by comparing the RVS spectra of 108 bright stars
with their flux-calibrated spectra from external spectrophotometric libraries.
The G_RVS magnitude provides information that is complementary to that obtained
from the G, G_BP, and G_RP magnitudes, which is useful for constraining stellar
metallicity and interstellar extinction. The median precision of G_RVS
measurements ranges from about 0.006 mag for the brighter stars (i.e. with 3.5
< G_RVS < 6.5 mag) to 0.125 mag at the faint end. The derived G_RVS passband
shows that the effective transmittance of the RVS is approximately 1.23 times

Native human autoantibodies targeting GIPC1 identify differential expression in malignant tumors of the breast and ovary
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We have been studying the native humoral immune response to cancer and have isolated a library of fully human autoantibodies to a variety of malignancies. We previously described the isolation and characterization of two fully human monoclonal antibodies, 27.F7 and 27.B1, from breast cancer patients that target the protein known as GIPC1, an accessory PDZ-domain binding protein involved in regulation of G-protein signaling. Human monoclonal antibodies, 27.F7 and 27.B1, to GIPC1 demonstrate specific binding to malignant breast cancer tissue with no reactivity with normal breast tissue.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The current study employs cELISA, flow cytometry, Western blot analysis as well as immunocytochemistry, and immunohistochemistry. Data is analyzed statistically with the Fisher one-tail and two-tail tests for two independent samples.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>By screening several other cancer cell lines with 27.F7 and 27.B1 we found consistently strong staining of other human cancer cell lines including SKOV-3 (an ovarian cancer cell line). To further clarify the association of GIPC1 with breast and ovarian cancer we carefully studied 27.F7 and 27.B1 using immunocytochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. An immunohistochemical study of normal ovarian tissue, benign, borderline and malignant ovarian serous tumors, and different types of breast cancer revealed high expression of GIPC1 protein in neoplastic cells. Interestingly, antibodies 27.F7 and 27.B1 demonstrate differential staining of borderline ovarian tumors. Examination of different types of breast cancer demonstrates that the level of GIPC1 expression depends on tumor invasiveness and displays a higher expression than in benign tumors.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The present pilot study demonstrates that the GIPC1 protein is overexpressed in ovarian and breast cancer, which may provide an important diagnostic and prognostic marker and will constitute the basis for further study of the role that this protein plays in malignant diseases. In addition, this study suggests that human monoclonal antibodies 27.F7 and 27.B1 should be further evaluated as potential diagnostic tools.</p
Modeling Vortex Swarming In Daphnia
Based on experimental observations in \textit{Daphnia}, we introduce an
agent-based model for the motion of single and swarms of animals. Each agent is
described by a stochastic equation that also considers the conditions for
active biological motion. An environmental potential further reflects local
conditions for \textit{Daphnia}, such as attraction to light sources. This
model is sufficient to describe the observed cycling behavior of single
\textit{Daphnia}. To simulate vortex swarming of many \textit{Daphnia}, i.e.
the collective rotation of the swarm in one direction, we extend the model by
considering avoidance of collisions. Two different ansatzes to model such a
behavior are developed and compared. By means of computer simulations of a
multi-agent system we show that local avoidance - as a special form of
asymmetric repulsion between animals - leads to the emergence of a vortex
swarm. The transition from uncorrelated rotation of single agents to the vortex
swarming as a function of the swarm size is investigated. Eventually, some
evidence of avoidance behavior in \textit{Daphnia} is provided by comparing
