Dietary elimination of children with food protein induced gastrointestinal allergy – micronutrient adequacy with and without a hypoallergenic formula?
Background:
The cornerstone for management of Food protein-induced gastrointestinal allergy (FPGIA) is dietary exclusion; however the micronutrient intake of this population has been poorly studied. We set out to determine the dietary intake of children on an elimination diet for this food allergy and hypothesised that the type of elimination diet and the presence of a hypoallergenic formula (HF) significantly impacts on micronutrient intake.
Method:
A prospective observational study was conducted on children diagnosed with FPIGA on an exclusion diet who completed a 3 day semi-quantitative food diary 4 weeks after commencing the diet. Nutritional intake where HF was used was compared to those without HF, with or without a vitamin and mineral supplement (VMS).
Results:
One-hundred-and-five food diaries were included in the data analysis: 70 boys (66.7%) with median age of 21.8 months [IQR: 10 - 67.7]. Fifty-three children (50.5%) consumed a HF and the volume of consumption was correlated to micronutrient intake. Significantly (p <0.05) more children reached their micronutrient requirements if a HF was consumed. In those without a HF, some continued not to achieve requirements in particular for vitamin D and zinc, in spite of VMS.
Conclusion:
This study points towards the important micronutrient contribution of a HF in children with FPIGA. Children, who are not on a HF and without a VMS, are at increased risk of low intakes in particular vitamin D and zinc. Further studies need to be performed, to assess whether dietary intake translates into actual biological deficiencies
Exposure of ciprofloxacin-resistant Escherichia coli broiler isolates to subinhibitory concentrations of a quaternary ammonium compound does not increase antibiotic resistance gene transfer
Resistance to antibiotics threatens to become a worldwide health problem. An important attributing phenomenon in this context is that pathogens can acquire antibiotic resistance genes through conjugative transfer of plasmids. To prevent bacterial infections in agricultural settings, the use of veterinary hygiene products, such as disinfectants, has gained popularity and questions have been raised about their contribution to such spreading of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of subinhibitory concentrations of benzalkoniumchloride (BKC), a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC), on the conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. Five Escherichia coli field strains originating from broiler chickens and with known transferable plasmid-mediated ciprofloxacin resistance were exposed to subinhibitory BKC concentrations: 1/3, 1/10 and 1/30 of the minimum bactericidal concentration. Antibiotic resistance transfer was assessed by liquid mating for 4 h at 25 degrees C using E. coli K12 MG1655 as recipient strain. The transfer ratio was calculated as the number of transconjugants divided by the number of recipients. Without exposure to BKC, the strains showed a ciprofloxacin resistance transfer ratio ranging from 10(-4) to 10(-7). No significant effect of exposure to subinhibitory concentrations of BKC was observed on this transfer ratio
'A boy would be friends with boys... and a girl... with girls' : gender norms in early adolescent friendships in Egypt and Belgium
Purpose: A gender analysis was conducted to illuminate the key elements of friendships highlighted by early adolescent girls and boys in two sites for the purpose of better understanding the impact of gender norms on adolescent friendships in different contexts.
Methods: Narrative interviews with early adolescents were conducted in two sites: Assiut, Egypt (n = 37) and Ghent, Belgium (n = 30). The interviews were recorded, transcribed, translated into English, and coded using Atlas.ti for analysis.
Results: In both Assiut and Ghent, early adolescents reported some similarities in defining key characteristics of their same-sex friends as well as in the activities they share. However, differences were noticed among boys and girls within each site. In addition, the scope of shared activity was broader in Ghent than in Assiut. In both sites, few opposite-sex friendships were reported. Gender norms influenced choice of friends as well as the type and place of shared activities.
Conclusions: Building on knowledge that adolescent friendships guide and reinforce attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that impact immediate and long-term health, our findings indicate that gender norms inform early adolescent friendships, which may impact healthy development

Untwisting of a cholesteric elastomer by a mechanical field
A mechanical strain field applied to a monodomain cholesteric elastomer will
unwind the helical director distribution. There is an analogy with the
classical problem of an electric field applied to a cholesteric liquid crystal,
but with important differences. Frank elasticity is of minor importance unless
the gel is very weak. The interplay is between director anchoring to the rubber
elastic matrix and the external mechanical field. Stretching perpendicular to
the helix axis induces the uniform unwound state via the elimination of sharp,
pinned twist walls above a critical strain. Unwinding through conical director

On the transitivity of the comonotonic and countermonotonic comparison of random variables
AbstractA recently proposed method for the pairwise comparison of arbitrary independent random variables results in a probabilistic relation. When restricted to discrete random variables uniformly distributed on finite multisets of numbers, this probabilistic relation expresses the winning probabilities between pairs of hypothetical dice that carry these numbers and exhibits a particular type of transitivity called dice-transitivity. In case these multisets have equal cardinality, two alternative methods for statistically comparing the ordered lists of the numbers on the faces of the dice have been studied recently: the comonotonic method based upon the comparison of the numbers of the same rank when the lists are in increasing order, and the countermonotonic method, also based upon the comparison of only numbers of the same rank but with the lists in opposite order. In terms of the discrete random variables associated to these lists, these methods each turn out to be related to a particular copula that joins the marginal cumulative distribution functions into a bivariate cumulative distribution function. The transitivity of the generated probabilistic relation has been completely characterized. In this paper, the list comparison methods are generalized for the purpose of comparing arbitrary random variables. The transitivity properties derived in the case of discrete uniform random variables are shown to be generic. Additionally, it is shown that for a collection of normal random variables, both comparison methods lead to a probabilistic relation that is at least moderately stochastic transitive
Significance of Ghost Orbit Bifurcations in Semiclassical Spectra
Gutzwiller's trace formula for the semiclassical density of states in a
chaotic system diverges near bifurcations of periodic orbits, where it must be
replaced with uniform approximations. It is well known that, when applying
these approximations, complex predecessors of orbits created in the bifurcation
("ghost orbits") can produce pronounced signatures in the semiclassical spectra
in the vicinity of the bifurcation. It is the purpose of this paper to
demonstrate that these ghost orbits themselves can undergo bifurcations,
resulting in complex, nongeneric bifurcation scenarios. We do so by studying an
example taken from the Diamagnetic Kepler Problem, viz. the period quadrupling
of the balloon orbit. By application of normal form theory we construct an
analytic description of the complete bifurcation scenario, which is then used
to calculate the pertinent uniform approximation. The ghost orbit bifurcation
turns out to produce signatures in the semiclassical spectrum in much the same

Are polymer melts "ideal"?
It is commonly accepted that in concentrated solutions or melts
high-molecular weight polymers display random-walk conformational properties
without long-range correlations between subsequent bonds. This absence of
memory means, for instance, that the bond-bond correlation function, , of
two bonds separated by monomers along the chain should exponentially decay
with . Presenting numerical results and theoretical arguments for both
monodisperse chains and self-assembled (essentially Flory size-distributed)
equilibrium polymers we demonstrate that some long-range correlations remain
due to self-interactions of the chains caused by the chain connectivity and the
incompressibility of the melt. Suggesting a profound analogy with the
well-known long-range velocity correlations in liquids we find, for instance,
to decay algebraically as . Our study suggests a precise
method for obtaining the statistical segment length \bstar in a computer
